I sequenced DNA first in 1988. In those days you could smoke in the lab, and we mouth-pipetted 32P-labelled materials into the wells at the top of a polyacrylamide gel. A really good sequencer could get maybe 400bp/read and 6 reads per gel, and maybe 8 gels/day if you worked your ass off. Now you can get your whole mtDNA sequenced for what, $400? The first one of those took an army of about 30 people between 1 and 2 years to do. Now a tech will sequence 24 of those a day by herself.

It will be in our lifetimes that the first time a person goes to the hospital, the doc will say, alrighty....let's just get your whole genome sequenced here, and then we'll see where we are. I'll be back in 15 minutes.
