Also, I heard that one reason they are not taking meat is it won't last more than a few months. But then, one can buy this at Costco and it claims a shelf life of 25 years.

So what's the disconnect? You know, other than the fact that re-hydrated meat pellets seems somewhat gag-inducing (the pictures on this product of Thanksgiving-quality ham and such have got to be total BS).

Look up the 'processing' steps for making tofu anything from soy. I hate to be all herpaderp Paleo, but Soy, aside from some of the worse smelling products like natto which are almost non-processed, is really, really, farking nasty stuff. Any vegetable they have to acid leach isn't really that good. Plus it takes a lot to turn soy->tofu.

I get that you can't have meat/dairy on a trip like this because it will never last, but why on earth do people keep trying to make meat replacements? I've never had a vegan meat replacement item that was remotely similar to the real thing, and to me that just makes it inferior and unappetizing.

Why not make something that isn't supposed to be meat? There are hundreds of dishes that are absolutely delicious, full of plenty of nutrients and protein, but don't include meat/dairy. Not because it's replaced by a substitute, but because meat doesn't belong in the meal. You just have to look outside of your western comfort zone a little bit. Indian food is the most obvious example where putting meat in some of the dishes actually makes decreases the flavor. But tofu bacon? I'd rather eat cardboard.

Oh sure! Thousands of rocket scientists and other engineers are scrambling to find a new job, yet NASA retains these dipwads to play Betty Crocker on the taxpayer's dime.

as much as i would like to chime in on the whole "tofu 'bacon'" thing ('cause it's an abomination which does not look, smell, feel or taste like bacon), i think we're missing the point here:

When the Earth and Mars are at their appropriate points in their solar orbits it only takes a few months to a year to go one way. But then you have to wait for the planets to both rotate around the sun into the same position which I believe takes a few years until your next window. So there's never been a timeframe problem with a roundtrip, but more of a fuel/logistics problem because you really need to be able to manufacture it on Mars, or at least have a couple unmanned resupply ships on the way to refuel you once you get there. I don't think there was ever a real plan to go there permanently one-way, just that there was no immediate plan to get you back. The idea was that eventually that would materialize as the technology matured and private transportation emerged.
