During an Elton show, I heard the redneck kid behind me ask his parents if Elton John was gay. Parents sputtered for 5 minutes about how there was no way in hell he was. Can't help but wonder how that warped this kids worldview. For gods sake, if Elton isn't gay, then who the hell is?

Funny thing that is. Interesting article on AVClub today about that: How Elton John's "The biatch Is Back" said a lot without specifying anything ^^^

Yes, an interesting article and also one that has at least ten factual errors that I saw. It just baffles me how in an age of Google, people can't get things like dates and places and names correct. Ah, the curse of doing proofreading as part of my job.....

What the article underplays is how that 1976 Rolling Stone article really had an effect on his popularity in the US, it did real damage to his career here when he came out as bisexual. It's a weird kind of hypocrisy, a celebrity version of Dont' Ask Don't Tell where almost everyone assumes that performer is gay but is shocked! shocked I tell you! when it's confirmed.

Well, to be honest, I never once heard him say "Captain Fantastic" in a "honey badger narrator" or "Hardly Boys" tone of voice.

This is true. Elton John wasn't thought of as a "gay singer" at that time, though, and he certainly wasn't the only rock star who performed in outrageous outfits. His career peaked when glam rock did; flamboyant stars such as David Bowie, Roxy Music, and the New York Dolls not only influenced his stage shows, but also those of Queen, Rod Stewart, KISS, and the Rolling Stones. By the late 1970s, he stopped wearing his trademark glasses and costumes for the most part, focusing on the music.
