He only broke his fifth metacarpal which doesn't hurt that bad, if at all. I would expect him to be back within 8 weeks.

Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez was on a roll last night. Hit former-Mariner-newest-Yankee Ichiro Suzuki, as well as A-Rod and Jeter for good measure.

Yeah. The fifth metacarpal is the least painful of all the non-painful bones you can break. I've broken them a time or two and didn't even notice it until my finger rehealed at an odd angle. Good thing is just slam it in a door or something, give it a pull straight and a quick shake and there you go. It's not until you get to femurs and humerus type bones where breaking actually merits breaking a sweat.

He's probably been waiting for years to be able to throw at Ichiro.

The problem is that it takes away from conditioning...can't grip weights, practice bats etc. It's a step backwards.

It's a shame Seattle doesn't have anyone to throw at in retaliation. I guess in this case you just move on.

BTW, Jaso has "when the levee breaks" as his walk up song so he is automatically my favorite player in the AL West

I guess you could throw one back at Felix - so what if he's sitting in the dugout? Just call it a fastball a bit off the plate and move on.

The metacarpal is a bone in the hand itself, not the pinky.

This. Had a "dislocation fracture of the distant fifth metacarpal" on my left hand years ago. Sports injury doc made a half cast, held in place with an Ace bandage.

I was able to take it off, gingerly squeeze a golf glove on it, and play fairly normally.

Only issue was the occasional "fat" hit - those stung quite a bit.

As soon as I saw it I said "fark, that's broken"; especially after A-Rod slapped the trainer's hand away when he tried to look at it.

Well, Ichiro is a rental to replace Gardner.. anyone have a 3B they need to unload this year?

if the top 2 teams in the AL are able to make it to the ALCS, I'm wondering what those line ups would look like.

Yanks and Rangers are decimated with injuries right now.

Well, Pettitte and A-Rod should both be back by October, Joba could be back in a week or two.
The ones down for the year are Mariano (and Soriano has been more than serviceable in the closer role), Gardner (who the Yankees got Ichiro to replace) and Pineda (who went down before the season even started.. can't miss what you never had; see also, Feliciano).

In the interim, the only big question mark is 3B. Chavez can't play every day and I'm sure Cashman and Girardi don't want to keep tossing ham and eggers out there.

Don't be silly, the bottom hand isn't really all that important in baseball. A-Rod is just an enormous pussy because he was in pain due to his finger getting slammed against the handle of a bat with a 88 MPH pitch. Surely no REAL man would react that way.

Yeah, I don't think I would have stepped into a batting cage back then. Stings bad enough when I'm healthy.

Of course, I remember defending Dion Sanders when he had "turf toe" - I had that as well, and it hurts like hell, especially if you try to cut on that foot.

Watching Bautista go down the way he did without breaking anything leads me to believe that A-rod's reaction is warranted.

Well if some random duffer can play golf through that injury, it shouldn't prevent A-Rod from hitting and fielding at a major league level

Are you guys suggesting that A-Rod was faking it with all that writhing on the ground? It's not like the ump was going to give Felix a yellow card.

I had a spiral fracture of the 5th metacarpal about 20 years ago and it hurt like hell.

Don't get me wrong - I suck at golf, at best, and it still hurt like a sumbiatch.
I cut the pinky out of the golf glove and it still put a tear in my eye as I worked it on my hand.
I just liked to play golf.

Actually since this was at Fenway I imagine there are lots more out of focus douchebags in the background but I digress. They are also wearing red.

I'm sure if Jason had asked the ump for a timeout to remove all of his gear, it surely would've been granted and A-Rod would've just twiddled his thumbs. This argument doesn't get any less stupid the more you say it or even if you say it like Yoda.

He's still wearing his mask and helmet, which take all of 2 seconds to knock off. Varitek is a douchebag.

See how fast that mask comes off when someone pops up behind the plate. It's not a stupid argument at all. He knew that taking off his mask would be like dropping the gloves in hockey, and he was too much of a pussy to do it.

I suppose this sort of thing would vary from person to person. My 4th and 5th metacarpals are now held together with wire and pins, but at the time I didn't even know they were broken. If I remember correctly, I was able to go weight bearing after 6 weeks after surgery and had full function after about 8 weeks.

You mean, kind of like... A-Rod...?

H31N0US: He knew that taking off his mask would be like dropping the gloves in hockey, and he was too much of a pussy to do it.

Given that Varitek, accompanied by the ump, was at first trying to escort Rodriguez (who was posturing and screaming obscenities) to 1B instead of letting him charge the the pitcher, taking off the mask would only have looked belligerent and should have been unnecessary-- Rodriguez ought just to have taken his base. Rodriguez made first contact trying to approach the mound, and Varitek got in his way. I've just watched and re-watched the clip, and it's pretty clear that, while Varitek definitely pushed Rodriguez backwards, it seemed intended to stop him charging the mound. Then the rest of the brawl happened (What the Hell was with Tanyon Sturtze? Do jackasses from Worcester really hate Jews that much? Did Kapler shag his sister and not call her again, or something?) and it all looked bad. But ultimately, Rodriguez should have taken his free base.

At first, it was all reasonably civil-- there was no way Arroyo meant to plunk him-- until Rodriguez tried to get all shirty and attempt to intimidate the new kid by charging the mound after clearly accidental contact.

That's all assuming the rumours that Varitek told him "We don't throw at guys hitting .260" are indeed false.

So the Mariners pitcher beaned Jeter, A-Rod and former team mate Ichiro who got traded two days ago? And the three of them together have around 8600 hits?

Smells like conspiracy. Seattle planned it all. Let's give them Ichiro, sure, but we'll break them in the process.
