I wish the UN, or hell even the US alone, would take care of this mess before it turns into another Libya. The revolutionaries aren't far from threatening Al-Assad whose hands have been tied by the world community. If I were him, I wouldn't have taken chemical weapons off the table so soon, but maybe that was just a ploy to catch the uprisers off guard later. With three days of air support from the US, we could completely restore peace to the region. It's driving me insane that they refuse to act.

Sounds like things are heating up in Aleppo, but it won't be long before someone runs. After the initial surge, it will simply be a matter of sitting it out. It looks like it will be a long chili winter.

I just imagined Groucho stumbling into the Syrian leadership and insulting them badly enough that they shoot each other trying to get at him while he made a quick escape.

Sometime laughter helps relieve the tension when things get bad.

You can tell it's all a ploy. The thread below is why. If Vladimir Putin went to Syria right now, he could walk down the street, have bullets ricochet off of him, and end this mess in the blink of an eye. Everyone bows to Putin.

See, what we've got here is... failure to communicate. Some men, you just can't reach. So, you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it. And I don't like it any more than you men. But, they practice selective annihilation of mayors and government officials, for example, to create a vacuum. Then they fill that vacuum. As popular war advances, peace is closer. But really, they don't need no civil war.

The course of the revolt will depend on how long the rebels can fight.

It's telling that the Syrian Army is unable to conduct simultaneous, large-scale operations. Instead they react to whenever the Free Syrian Army takes the offensive, as we saw in Damascus, Homs, and now Aleppo. Now that the FSA has been pushed back (or rather, the FSA has melted away) from the Damascene suburbs, only now can they deal with Aleppo. The Syrian military has essentially conceded the northeast to Kurdish rebels and the Turkish border to the FSA.

This isn't even mentioning that the fall of the Syrian-Iraqi border posts to the FSA is an economic blow to the Syrian regime. Juan Cole notes that 70% of goods entering Syrian come from these border posts. This is true because the sanctions imposed by the West and Turkey on Syria has effectively made the Mediterranean ports come to a standstill.

While the regime still has the advantage of firepower, so long as the FSA can conduct these offensives, the Syrian military will see its ranks collapse due to defections and desertions, leaving only a hardcore of Alawites left to defend the regime. That, and IEDs have a way of leveling the playing field for the FSA.

AnkhX10.0: The course of the revolt will depend on how long the rebels can fight.

With all the money and weapons that the US, Qatar, and the Saudis are channeling to them, I suspect the rebels will be able to keep up the fight for quite a while. Russia can't match that with their support for Assad because they have to rely on the ports and Russia's support is out in the open instead of under the table.

Of course, all indications are that areas the FSA is controlling are reverting very quickly to strict Islamic law; the Syrian rebels are the same group of people that caused us so much trouble in Iraq. Which is why I don't understand all of the calls for US intervention in Syria. Yeah, Assad is a dick, but the FSA aren't ideologically any better. This is one of those times where it's probably best we sit back and be grateful that these extremist morons are so busy killing each other that they don't have time to try to kill us.

And say besides that in Aleppo once,
Where a malignant and a turbaned Turk
Beat a Venetian and traduced the state,
I took by th' throat the circumcised dog
And smote him thus.
