The Koran specifically lists traveling as an exemption and several clerics have stated that they're ok to break the fast for the Olympics. So this only really sucks for a Muslim Olympic athlete if they choose to make it suck?

I'm ok with this.

Allah's medal count is pretty lame so far. I don't think it is going to make much difference if you've had a falafel. or not.

Fasting makes you faster, right?

Just hit the buffet hard before sunrise and they'll be good to go

Morocco's men's football team have pledged to fast during the Olympics despite a request from their Dutch coach Pim Verbeek.
"We must fast because this is an obligation and I think that God will help us on the day of the games," said Morocco's Atletico Madrid-bound goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou.

On game day he said, "God be praised for these water coolers filled with protein drinks."

Yeah, God has a vested interest in your performance at the Olympics. Billions of planets in billions of galaxies in the universe and He gives a shiat about how well you perform in.... whatever event it is you do.

Except that they aren't supposed to drink water during the day, either.

give me doughnuts: Except that they aren't supposed to drink water during the day, either.

I did not know that. Do you think the restriction applies to all the saline IVs that these players will need after they pass out from playing soccer in August without being able to drink anything?

Because Morocco was going to go really far in the tournament even with proper nutrition.

Besides, everyone knows that the only football God cares about is the game where you use your hands to catch the ball!

Hey, Koufax didn't pitch at all on Yom Kippur. Olympic athletes don't get the option to sit out their competition.

The Olympic tourney looks like it will be more like in the upper 60s, so the soccer players might do okay being strictly superstitious. The marathoners, not so much.

It also sucks if you choose to eat a bowl of thumbtacks. We all make our choices.

Hashim Amla of the South African cricket team decided to observe the Ramadan fast during their match against England last week. It certainly affected him a lot...all he did was break the all-time South African scoring record and lead the team to their first win in England in years.

It's a bit risky to hope God will help you out. He's not always in the helping mood when it comes to sports. Ask Stevie Johnson.

Yeah, I don't get the concern. It's isn't like they're not eating at all for thirty days.

Ramadan, in which Muslims refrain from dawn until sunset from eating, drinking, and sexual relations, as well as, generally sinful speech and behavior.

So basically if you skip lunch you're fasting by that definition. Yeah, sounds like a real challenge.

Well, think twice before joining some arab heresy.

There are many reasons why it would be ok to not fast during Ramadan. People who are pregnant, nursing or are sick do not have to fast, however if they are very devout they will try and make up for it by fasting when they are able too. It would certainly make sense then that an athlete would be able to be exempt so to speak from fasting during the Olympics, if he/she were to fast afterwards to make up for however many days they did not fast for.

Also I apologize for what may be a wall of text, posting from my phone while at work.

Because the world is against Islam, and we made the Olympics to confound Muslims, and the West sucks, and deserves to die.
