Most likely result: Assad launches WMDs at Israel.

Assad: "You only said not to launch them at the rebels, nothing about launching them at the Jews."
Putin: "He's right, sorry USA. Our hands are tied. Heh heh heh."
Rebels: "Oh, he's killing Jews? I guess Assad's not so bad, and we'd better support him or Israel will obliterate us all."
Israel: "OMGWTFBBQ. We demand our allies join us in fighting back."

Forgive me for choosing this point in time to follow Winston Wolf's sage advice. Maybe if Russia would stop propping up Syria, Assad wouldn't be in the position to gas his fellow citizens.

2012-07-25 08:50:27 AM
That's the only intelligent thing Putin could do. It becomes very hard for Russia to block UN action on Syria if chemical weapons are being used. By keeping the things off the table, there's still a chance for Assad to win the civil war and keep Syria in Russia's weakening sphere of Middle Eastern influence. If the rebels win, and Obama launches Operation Ajax 2 in his second term, Russia is back to where they started when the Tsarists were trying to move themselves south in the 19th century. In short we're back on the winning side of the Great Game, and it's scaring the hell out of Putin.

Imagine if Obama was losing to Mitt Romney in the polls and so Obama decided to make up bogus charges of tax evasion against Mitt Romney. Then, using a kangaroo court, Obama had Mitt Romney convicted of those charges and sent to a labor camp in siber-, er, Alaska for 10+ years.

Because that is exactly what Vladimir Putin did to Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

I'm guessing the conversation went something like this;

Bashar: I'm thinking of gassing the people that refuse to bow down to me.

Putin: If you do that you'll enrage the West enough to bomb the crap out of your cities and hunt you and your family down with drones.

Bashar: Eh, on second thought I don't think I'll gas the people that refuse to bow down to me.

"lying rich piece of shiat". You've described Tsar Vladimir perfectly.

The only reason the Russians are against Syria using gas is that if they do, it's all over and Russia's lost a big customer for their attack helicopters and fighter jets. Putin would rather Assad just keep using the Russian supplied helicopters and jets against the Syrian populace so Vlad can keep selling him bombs and rockets.

Launch Code: Not everyone hates Putin. obama promised Putin anything he wants, IF he gets elected for a 2nd term. Darn those hot mikes, they make things so transparent.

Why not? Putin's a great guy:

"I looked the man in the eye. I found him to be very straight forward and trustworthy and we had a very good dialogue. I was able to get a sense of his soul. He's a man deeply committed to his country and the best interests of his country and I appreciate very much the frank dialogue and that's the beginning of a very constructive relationship," Mr Bush said.

USA: "Uh... sorry, but we decided you're not worth starting WWIII over. You're on your own, Israel."

You forgot the last line:

Israel: "Oh well, begin Operation "Glass Damascus".

Didn't happen when Saddam launched SCUDs at Tel Aviv, probably won't happen if Assad does the same.

That is one stupid assassin, if he had come at me and he only had a cane for his weapon, I'd beat the crap out of him too.

No, Putin would finish him off appropriately. Probably make him watch it on security cams while he's doing it, too.

As long as they are scuds with explosive warheads you are right, Israel would just pound Syria with conventional weapons. If Syria were to use chemical weapons against Israel all bets are off. For some reason that I can't recall right off the top of my head, Jewish people in general have been real touchy about poison gas for the last 70 years or so. This is especially true for Jews that left certain European nations and moved to the middle east after a small disagreement with the political party that ruled a large portion of Europe at the time.

I can't think of any course of action more ill advised than gassing Jews in Israel.

JonnyG: qualtrough: It amazes me that so many people think that what is going on in Syria is some kind of spontaneous uprising by freedom-seeking rebels. How many time are you going to fall for that shiat?

By my count, at least about a half dozen times in the last 2-3 years.

Well to be fair, they are freedom seeking.. only problem is their definition of freedom and yours and mine isn;t exactly the same. Theirs could mean freedom to chop a female's head off for adultery or the freedom to impose syariah law .. freedom is one of those words that could mean anything from total anarchy to absolute authoritarian depending on who defines it.

Exactly. That's why Putin would say "nyet" to that as well; Syria ever does that, Putin says "You're on your own Assad."

Also, don't think the Iranians would step in either lest a couple of hundred warheads decend over Tehran.

Ultimately it matters what Russians think of Putin, not me.

I will say this, though. I do not understand Americans who won't let the Cold War end. It's over. Very over. Russia today is not the Soviet Union. It has its issues but those are mostly internal. Russia doesn't have the desire for global control. It cares about mostly Asia and some of Europe, and even then it's about money, not ideology, now. Russia loves capitalism. Loves the sh*t out of it. It just happens to love oligarchy more.

Russia's seat as a permanent member of the UN security council and the veto privilege that that entails is the reason we still treat Russia as if the cold war were still on.

scubamage: I like Putin. It'd be nice having a man in office who has actually had to kill a few people for his country in the first person. Not through a bunch of paperwork that deploys seals all over.

Uh, when did Putin do this exactly? Putin has never had any sort of combat role.

Putin is indeed a murderous thug, but he doesn't carry out his own assassinations.
