That's bullsh*t.
Tam is a successful woman and doesn't need anything but she should have benefits available.
I have utmost respect for them both.

Both remarkable women that shared their love of science and learning.
This is a disgrace to our culture to have her, and others, treated this way.

Well, my pastor says it's evil and that's good enough for me!

It's worth noting that Mitt is campaigning on a Federal Marriage Amendment that would impose "traditional" marriage nationwide.

In an ideal world denying partner benefits because of being gay would be illegal. In a Republican's world, its still the status quo, and required because some 2000 year old book says so.

Are you satisfied, Mitt, that Ride's partner of 27 years, Tam O'Shaughnessy, will be denied federal benefits because of the Defense of Marriage Act?

I am, but only because I'm OK with denying benefits to the Irish.

You know something is wrong with the government when it's entire population goes "huh? really?" when something like this is allowed to happen.

As president, Mitt will not only appoint an Attorney General who will defend the Defense of Marriage Act - a bipartisan law passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton - but he will also champion a Federal Marriage Amendment to the Constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman.

Yes, but it's defending marriage. If she wasn't attacking marriage then it wouldn't have to stand it's ground.

Fortunately we have a legal system in place to defend us from people who do things in their bedrooms that many, many people would like to do, but are afraid to. Giving these people benefits would validate that you will not die or be a horrible person because you have touched the same genitals that you possess. In fact it's almost like they're being reward for docking or scissoring. The Horror!

I'm not a fan of politicizing Sally Ride's death like this. She should be celebrated and remembered as a hero, that's it.

DOMA has serious problems and should be repealed. Certainly statements like in this article crystallize a serious issue with the law. But for every Sally Ride, there's thousands of anonymous people in similar situations suffering far worse. Let's change the law for those folks... not latch on to Sally Ride as some sort of rallying cry. Tam O'Shaughnessy, from what I can find of her, doesn't exactly need the benefits. Just let her mourn in peace.

We're blaming Mitt Romney for DOMA now? Or are we just blaming him for declaring that he would defend a federal law?

I'm glad Fark yearns for the days when Presidents arbitrarily decided which federal laws they can ignore.

What sort of federal benefits would Ride's partner be entitled to if she were her legal spouse?

I know Joe Lieberman has long and rightly been pushing for benefits for same-sex partners of federal workers but what are those benefits upon the death of the worker?

The Kos rant says she will be denied benefits. Would health benefits have continued for her after Ride's death? Pension? Just curious.

My grandparents transferred a multi-million dollar corporation tax-free from my grandfather to grandmother as he'd made no other specific plan for it.

Well, why are you asking the question? How does it make any difference? There are benefits that a legal spouse would get that she is not getting merely because she is gay. It doesn't matter what those benefits are. The point is that she is being treated differently because she is gay.

So I'm assuming you completely support gay marriage and are just curious?

Yep, that's patently unfair. But it's not a federal benefit per se. I'm thinking more along the lines of employment benefits, which is what I think they're talking about.

I'm also for allowing people to give benefits to whoever they choose. I mean if someone in my family got sick and didn't have insurance why shouldn't I be able to add them to my plan? If someone's mail order bride can get them I think I should be able to give mine to a sibling.

I absolutely support gay marriage, which is one step beyond completely.

I'm curious as to what benefits continue for spouses of federal workers after the death of the worker.
