There seems to be a lot of Christian butthurt in this thread, and that surprises me.

C'mon, folks. We're talking about a silly book about an invisible man who lives in the sky and his zombie son.

who cares?

Vangor: Thank you. Though the arguments about translation and being a collection are proper excuses, and I would say the story is in a sad state as well, something irks me about people saying the Bible is some great piece of literature. Of historical and cultural significance, of course, but

Exactly. And some parts of it are very well written and have a good flow, both from skillful translation and probably from those parts being created by able storytellers. But overall as a flow, treated as a single work of literature, it is a painful read.

And, yeah, dropping all of those pages of begats on you not far after the beginning really pushes you away from wanting to continue.

For a comparable work in terms of mythology, but with much better flow and storytelling (both due to skillful translation and to a skillful storyteller), I'd say read the Odyssey. Great flow, great action, great characters, some good moral lessons, and overall just about everything a good story should be.

I think its better to point out the clearly historically inaccurate things, and less of the magical things, because people will just shout that "God did it" for the magical things. However when you can point to historical things like the actual lack of Jewish slaves in Egypt, and lack of an exodus, or as the other poster said the cities that Joshua didn't actually conquer its hard to hand wave and lamp shade them away.

Anyone who uses "almost all" or "most" when refering to groups of people knows absolutely nothing about those people.

The key to appreciating the bible is to focus on the parts you like (or that you interpret the way you like) and forget all the rest.

On the one hand, gays are bad people. If you like that, feel free to ignore the whole stone female adulterers sentence right after it.

If you are an American, feel free to ignore all the parts about charity and taking care of the least of god's creatures.

It really gets fun if you can find enough like minded people to follow you to start imposing your will on others. This is pretty easy because it's written by morons and for morons. It's cornball syntax can make morons think they're smart by spewing parts of it (just make sure they only spew the 'right' parts).

straw man argument.
where are you getting that "most atheists" believe that "everything that religion teaches is bad?"
that's nonsense. Most religions have hundreds of little lessons the vast majority of which perfectly decent ways to live your life. I don't know many atheists that would dispute that. I think some might argue that this doesn't justify some of the other less-logical teachings that most churches are guilty of...
of course - those are the atheist crusaders. i don't get those people. seems to me that atheism as a religion substitute is a waste of time. me, i'll tell you what i think if you ask, but i have no interest in destroying anyone else's faith. don't see the point.

but seriously - people are nasty on the internet. that's just how it is... oversimplified jingoism is the norm. most atheists certainly don't believe everything religion teaches is bad. most atheists just don't believe in God and that's the end of it. How about the parts involving an exodus from Egypt consisting of Jewish people, or ever being slaves in Egypt at any time ever?

Link

http://skeptoid.com/episodes/4191

So your proof of anything disputing the history of the Bible is a blog? First off, no one know for sure what part of the Egyptian population built the pyramids, so it is entirely possible a slave population built them. The city that is described as being the location that the Hebrews living in has many similarities to an uncovered archeological site in North Eastern Egypt in an area of the Delta Region that is not longer an active part. The stable areas could have housed the numbers of horses and carts that are stated in the persuit.

There are some theories that Moses may have been a hebraic name of Akhenaten or one of his children who was not Tutankhamun (aten). The fact that the exact historic person hasn't been identified doesn't invalidate an exodus just because YOU want it to, which is your right.

Also in a number of caves in the desert between the Egyptian nile plains and the 'Holy Land' there are places where very early Hebrew writing has been found. Which in itself proves nothing, but is an interesting fact.

Does any of this prove that the story of the exodus is true? No. Does any of this disprove the story of the exodus? No. Is this going to change your mind or anyone who doesn't believe? No. But your citing a blog in defense of a position isn't exactly the best move to prove YOUR point.

Well, I was being facetious.
I took offense to your implication that it's seemingly "acceptable" to be a bigot if you're an atheist, so I responded with an image of a bigot who is not an atheist.
Your first impression was "most fellow Christians don't like him either"
My first impression when I see atheist bigots is "most fellow atheists don't like them either"
Bigotry is wrong, regardless of religious affiliation or lack thereof.

That said, I don't find the act of removing bibles from the rooms of a hotel which he owns is an act of "bigotry." It's his hotel & if he doesn't want bibles in his rooms, more power to him.
If you're referring to Subby's headline, well, that's not bigotry either. the Bible really does at least mention all of those things.

I'm not angry at all. I just making fun of you.

Dude. I SAID it's NOT in the book of Genesis. Do you even know what Apocrypha is?

Yes, but Genesis is part of the bible itself, not a part of the Apocrypha. That's not to say there might be some extra-biblical Jewish fable out there. If that's what you meant, I DID misunderstand you and if I did, I'm sorry.
