With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time," said Lora Koenig, a Goddard glaciologist and a member of the research team analyzing the satellite data. "But if we continue to observe melting events like this in upcoming years, it will be worrisome."

This was an event they were expecting, and they will only get worried about it if it happens earlier than they expect

Except that I know enough to know that I listen to the dorks with 15 letters after their name and a bunch of cool high-tech gear. Sure, we've gone through cooling cycles and all that jazz. But, I've seen enough movies to know that when you ignore the scientists, you wind up banging some chick in the New York Public library just to stay warm.

Wait... Perhaps I haven't thought this through enough.

So, I am in the middle of reading "The Two-Mile Time Machine", which is all about the greenland ice mass and the ice cores that they have taken. Then I come to fark and NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO it is melting.

on the other hand, the book points out that most large climate changes can happen quickly and be caused by small forces.

Er, didn't the article say that 40% had already shown signs of melting, and then it changed to 97% showing signs of melting in 4 days? I'm no mathemagician, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't mean that 97% of the ice melted in 4 days.

FTA : Measurements from three satellites showed that on July 8, about 40 percent of the ice sheet had undergone thawing at or near the surface. In just a few days, the melting had dramatically accelerated and an estimated 97 percent of the ice sheet surface had thawed by July 12.

So, it went from 40% to 97% in that four day period, not 0% to 97%. That's a lot less interesting.

You might want to look up how Greenland got it's name some time.

Hint: Buena Vista Blvd, doesn't really offer any breathtaking views.

Let me be more specific. Until 1989 the record number of 100 degree days in Denver was 3. This year: 13. So far. Just one data point to be sure (well, the latest data point), but the 100 degree day records show the classic 'hockey-stick' pattern.

Because you have 2 religions fighting things out.

You have the environmentalist religion vs traditional religions. All religious fights end up one way, with people being assholes bantying about "facts" that anyone who isnt of their beliefs can clearly see arent facts.

Both sides fire these "facts" at the other, then get their feelings hurt when someone, say me, points out that their facts are beliefs.

/ Just because a "scientist" provided you with facts does not mean they are infallible. Kinda like the pope. "scientists" used to believe the liver pumped blood, and that blood was burned by the organs for fuel. But of course, our scientists of today see things MUCH more clearly.

Since I am just little tired of seeing this saying. Sigh..... CO2 is not pollution, it's not dirty, it's not smog, we are not "cleaning" the air by removing it. Trees breathe it, we expel it when we exhale, it is a common, natural gas. So by lowering CO2 emmisions we are not improving the air quality. Emissions such as sulphur are a different story. But hey, guess what? Experiments have shown all the efforts to lower sulphur emmission have actually added to global warming by allowing a higher percentage of sunlight to reach ground level. Talk about damned if we do, damned if we don't.
