The unemployed must SUFFER in DEPRESSION and DESPAIR every second of every day until they are gainfully employed like the morally, intellectually, and sexually superior employed people. If you're unemployed and you're not crying or on your knees begging to god with some CEO's cock down your throat for an unpaid internship, you should be shot on sight and then sent to a cold prussian prison where you'll learn the meaning of work as you cox turnips to grow in frozen soil. Stop being lazy and stealing my money, you farking moochers.

I take the same vacation every year, employed or not.

I also travel beyond that vacation, employed or not.

While on unemployment, I halted the unemployment while not actively looking for work, in compliance with our laws.

It's my savings, and it's my insurance money. How I budget is nobody's concern but my own.

Regardless of employment status, if you do not make time for vacation you are not only an idiot... But you are farking up the world for the rest if us.

People who dont take vacay are scared pussies and only enrichening masters. In the case of the self employed, you are risking your business. Have some balls, take time off and enjoy it. You aren't making your nation more productive.. You are only reducing yourself to being a slave and/or burning out.

I'm supposed to go on a mini vacation in a couple days, I have extra money set aside but that could change drastically if I get raped by the electric company (I get my bill in a day or 2). Just found out that a friend is getting billed for $400 this month.

Looking for work is a full-time job. My state requires you to show what jobs you've applied to on your bi-weekly claim. Researching job boards, prepping for interviews, traveling for interviews, and the application process itself -- in my case, the last job I interviews for required a test, of which they expected ONE WEEK'S worth of output, which they would judge for quality as well as quantity.

So after this grueling schedule for several months during the worst of the economic downturn, damn skippy I needed a break.

But watch out -- the state unemployment office may schedule an in-person interview at their office at almost zero notice.

Well, you can be out of town looking for work. After all, if you can't find a job after several months in your area, maybe you might look elsewhere.

Pretty sure they have jobs in vacation spots.

The only time I get any real time off is when I'm laid off.

Worked 15 years w/o anything but weekends off, and not always those. When my rent went up 20% in '07, my boss conveniently decided to reduce my hours to 32 so he didn't have to drive his hour commute and save gas (it went up to almost $5 a gallon at the same point). Mind you, I still had to work about 40 hours a week (give or take) to make the parts, but I only got paid for 32 no matter what. After a year of that, when I couldn't make up for the back rent and the electric bill, I quit on a moments notice and walked out. Took my first vacation in 20 years.

One of the nice things about working in California is an employer can't screw you out of your vacation pay. If they won't grant you the time off, they eventually have to pay you the money. Unlike some states where they can have a use it or lose it policy and refuse to grant the time because "it's the busy time". I would never work for a company that refused to authorize time off.

As for taking a vacation when unemployed, if you've ever been unemployed for any length, you know how stressful it can be. Taking just a few days to not think about finding work can make the world of difference.

The writer has just been listening to too many whiners. I ran into them in my tiny town all over the place.

There were people talking about me in the local diner, coordinating with each other to determine when I had and hadn't been seen around town, so they'd know if I was off in the desert or the tundra instead of looking for work. A barmaid at the ski lodge posted on FB that I really shouldn't be spending my money in their restaurant, seeing as I was on unemployment at the time.

People for some reason feel completely empowered to walk up to a stranger they've just heard is on unemployment, and start berating him or her. It happened at least a dozen times.

He has survivor's guilt. I don't. I didn't spend like a drunken sailor when I was employed, didn't run up credit card or other debt, and instead put away savings for a rainy day. It's raining, I have an umbrella, and I'm going to use it without guilt.

One thing i have learned is, when i don't have income, i cannot squander what i have.

She's been unemployed since Jan '10. She's got some $ since her husband died (probably wanted to die young just to get away from her twat waffling). If you didn't read the article, let me sum it up for you. "oh, poor me. my husband died and left me all this insurance money and his 401K. I've spent the past 2.5 years finishing my masters, my kid's in college, I write freelance articles about how tough it is to be me, and I'm generally just exhausted from diddling myself while reading soft porn novels. I know, I'll take a vacation from doing nothing and I'll feel all cozy again.". Twat Waffle.

With me, the irony was they left a message on Friday that I had to come in on Monday for an interview, but I couldn't because I was offered a job that started that day! And there was no way to postpone or decline the interview, and the beauracracy was utterly unable to handle such an event. It took two months and a judge to unwind my failure to appear and receive my last benefit check.

(I did get a nice formal judgement ib my favor with a "god DAMN the state unemployment office is incompetent" letter from the judge. Hells yeah: Unemployment is designed to be as punitive and painful as possible for the claimant...!)

If your mind requires you to "go someplace relaxing" to take a vacation, perhaps your mind isn't properly trained.

If you have books around the house you haven't read, belongings you need to throw out / reorganize, or walks you'd like to take in or near your neighborhood, you've got three "vacation" possibilities right there. Free.
