As a former Maricopa resident, his department has a for Driving While Brown. Or Black.

I remember being stopped a while back, and the surprise of the officer who realized I was white in an '88 New Yorker. He then grew happier when he realized that there were a couple of brown and black folks in the car, and ran us through a few hoops to prove that we'd just gotten out of work and were headed home. He also asked if I was being held against my will, despite the fact that we were all still wearing our chef's coats...

Apparently, we weren't supposed to mix after work...

ox45tallboy: Snarcoleptic_Hoosier: He's not a racist! He just judges people based on the color of their skin, and deems certain colors worth a bit more judging than others.

It's totally different!

So what do you think about the current culture of "anti-illegal-immigration" as a form of "socially acceptable" racism? It seems that the highest proportion of anti-immigration sentiment is in historically racist areas such as Alabama, Georgia, and Texas, even though California has just as many, if not more "illegal" immigrants.

My snarky answer: Well, as long as you only hate the illegal ones, then I suppose it's all right. Personally, I only burn crosses on the lawns of decedents of field slaves. House slaves are cool, and deserve nothing done to their kin.

My non snarky answer: They're delusional if they think that it's easy to spot illegal immigrants just by looking at them. I understand that some people aren't playing by the rules, but this country was settled by people who left crappy conditions for something better. My German ancestors came over on the boat in the 1850s. I can't blame anyone else for doing what my family did 150 years ago.

vegasj: As Arpaio testified in court, dozens of opponents protested outside, and four were arrested for blocking traffic. The four are undocumented immigrants from Mexico who came to the U.S. with their families, according to Tania Unzueta of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, which helped organize the protest.

Police said each will likely face a misdemeanor charge of failure to obey law enforcement's orders.

How about they are arrested for being here ILLEGALLY!

this "undocumented immigrants" PC crap is... well, crap. They are here legally or illegally, illegally means they are illegals.

The image is too big to show directly, here's the Link.

Basically, lets start off by assuming you're even eligible to get a green card. If that's true, it still takes a minimum of six years to gain citizenship - that's for spouses of people who are already citizens or somebody who's a world class athlete that wants to play for a US team.

But if you don't already have close family ties in the US, and you don't have some specialized skill, you're basiclly SOL - there's only 10,000 of those allowed in each year.

I just can't find it in myself to drum up some great amount of anger at some unskilled day laborer who's just doing what he has to to make a decent life for his kids, but has to break the law one time to do so because a hundred years ago the US set up a quota system because people got scared that the Irish, Chinese and Italians were going to swamp the god-fearing WASPs under in a sea of immigrants.

No problem, the Indians won't live in double-wides and trailer parks and will thus be spared the wrath of God.

Uchiha_Cycliste: Mikey1969: Alphax: So why does he have a job? Do his superiors fear him or something?

Because blue haired timid mice in Minnesota get to vote s long as they spend either 3 or 4 months a year in the state. This means that all of the Snowbirds who hear about the big scary city and Joe's "crusade" think he's doing a good job because when they truck into Mesa in their Winnebagos, they don't get mugged at the border. Of course they're too stupid to understand how a big city works, or they would know that one part of town can be a hellhole with daily shootings, while others are pure old fart nirvana.

Trust me, despite Joe's "crusade", there were still gunshots nightly in the neighborhoods I lived in.

And let's ask the residents of El Mirage how good of a job he's doing. Since he's not racist, I'm sure his department was right on top of those 400+ sex crimes that were reported, amirite?

They also don't understand that he's made crime *worse* and costed them a boatload of money while he was at it. If, god forbid, they actually looked at numbers instead of listening to slick, lying speeches they'd kick his ass to the curb in a heartbeat. But if the way my dad votes is any indication, that will never happen.

I would disown my parents if they voted for someone like Arpaio. That's the line. I'll respect your right to vote for whomever you wish to vote for so long as it isn't someone as overtly racist as Arpaio. Voting for someone like that, who is a fascist to boot, is just like voting for an actual member of the Nazi party. You can't say you didn't know.

/good thing my family is all liberal.
//except my gun nut, single-issue voter brother.
///he didn't realize that the Democrats won't start cracking down on guns, no matter what a certain Congressional minority leader's personal opinions are.
////just like the Democrats would never actually try to sell Texas, Oklahoma and Arizona back to Mexico, no matter how much they would probably like to...

ox45tallboy: I recently re-watched this movie a month or so ago, and I think it holds up extremely well, especially in the current climate of looking down on brown people being a "socially acceptable" racism.

It's one of my favorite movies, mainly because I relate too well to Rudy. I love the scene in which he teaches the immigrants how to act like Este Los homies. :)

StreetlightInTheGhetto: You're family has been here longer than mine (I'm 2nd gen) but I'm white and any folks in my family with accents have suppressed them or passed on so I don't have anything to worry about. That kind of sucks.

Same goes for my family. We have the reverse problem: most of us are brown, speak very little or no Spanish, and occasionally have to deal with shiat from down-home Messicans who call us pochos or coconuts (like Rudy in Born In East L.A.), and from non-Messicans who think we know Spanish but pretend not to speak it because we're ashamed of it. I have a slight Valley Girl accent, and my formal Spanish sucks. That doesn't matter to people like Arpaio, though, because all they see is a brown person who might be here illegally.

I spent one night in Willcox, AZ back in April. In the morning I went to the local Safeway, and never saw so many white-bearded men in one place in all my life. Didn't see a single brown person in the store, either. I asked Checkout Dude (a middle-aged white guy) for directions to a local museum, and I could tell that he was surprised that I didn't have a Spanish accent. Dude actually took the time to draw a little map for me, which I appreciated.

It's a beautiful state, and despite feeling somewhat uncomfortable while traveling through it, I would love to visit it again, especially the San Carlos Apache reservation, where my paternal grandmother was born back when AZ was still a territory.

I'm glad you did. I've gotten accused of "monopolizing the thread" in the past, so I tried picking one that wasn't green this time and left it up to the mods. I'll try doing the same again in the future; I don't want to interfere with the otherwise civil discourse we enjoy here.

I don't think he's done yet. He could come out and say "I'm a racist. I hate non-white people, and I will use the power of my office to arrest non-white people until they leave the state", and you would still be able to hear the quietest cricket chirping over the demands of affluent residents demanding his removal.

Civil rights rarely win popularity contests.

Nadie_AZ: But the sheriff made his worst impressions while answering questions about his book, Joe's Law.

Basically, anytime Arpaio was shown some of the blatant bigotry in that book, he blamed it on co-author Len Sherman. And this was despite being read back his testimony from a previous deposition in which he'd said he didn't need to read his own book because he'd written it himself.

Arpaio was forced by Young to back off from a couple of statements in the book, including one in which he wrote that Mexicans don't come to the United States with the same hopes and dreams as people from other countries.. In another part of the book, Young pointed out, Arpaio wrote that second- and third-generation Mexican-Americans were not part of the American "mainstream."

"My co-author wrote that," Arpaio blurted out.

He has so much rope, he could dangle from the Empire State Building and touch the ground.

I'm a 5th-generation Arizonan. We were here when this was Mexico, and I'm here to tell you that my family is just as white trash as any other family out there, thankyouverymuch.

Arpaio can eat a dick.

Wait a minute...you mean to tell me that when I drove through AZ a few months ago, I had no reason to be afraid of being harassed for being brown, because Arpaio and his goons would instantly know that I'm 4th gen*?!?

I'm just as brown as the other Messicans.
