Say what?

I think the granddaddy of inconvenient car names was the Chevy Nova.

Which, in Mexico, translates to "is not" or "no go" or something. Whatever -- not good for a car.

I grew up in the South and I don't think I have EVER heard this particular epithet.

Anyone else?

/yes, of course I'm white

Archimedes' Principal: Trust me. I know a guy who knows a guy at Toyota Japan. The 'Spade' was named after DAVID Spade.

/He's very popular in Japan.

Yeah because he's the only white man they are taller than?

While not a racial slur, Chevy had the famous "Nova", which translates in Spanish to "doesn't go" when spoken.

2012-07-24 09:17:37 PM
Will it be capable of extremely fast speeds but for 90 percent of the time drive very slowly?

Yeah.... I liked it better when it was called the Peugeot 1007.

spade (plural spades)

1. A garden tool with a handle and a flat blade for digging. Not to be confused with a shovel which is used for moving earth or other materials.

/* I hadn't known that was the difference, by the way. Upon further up-looking I found this at Wikipedia: "The term shovel is sometimes used interchangeably with spade, but shovels generally are broad-bottomed and better suited for moving loose materials, whereas spades tend to be pointed for use as a digging tool." NOW they tell me.*/

2. A playing card marked with the symbol ♠. "I've got only one spade in my hand."

/* What I think of first when I hear the word "spade." */

3. (offensive, ethnic slur) A black person.

/* Didn't this usage go out of style when the Jeffersons were still living next door to the Bunkers? I haven't heard it in several years myself, so long ago I can't recall what city I was living in at the time. */

D_Evans45: Whoever had a problem with this deserves to be shot and left to bleed out in a ditch somewhere.

I know a guy who'd probably be happy to do that for you. But you'll have to break him outta jail first. He'll claim it was self defense.

Fabric_Man: Supposedly, Honda tried to market the Fit in Sweden as the "Fita." It's slang for vagina.

Can't see why they'd do that. It's called the 'Jazz ' in Europe.
Apparently there was a problem calling it that in the US, but I've no idea why.

I don't get it? Let me read thru post to see if I become enlightened.

I'd rather have a Mazda 5.

markie_farkie: Big deal..

In other parts of the world, the Mitsubishi Montero is sold as the Pajero. Apparently in South American Spanish slang, Pajero is a term for 'One who masturbates constantly'

Sure, but those people probably aren't going to have time to buy a car.

// why did they call the spade the spade?

Mad_Radhu: Unfortunate name aside, I'll bet that thing is downright nubianrdly when it comes to fuel consumption compared to a full sized minivan.

came for the nubianrdly crack, leaving satisfied.

If any car company needs a Spade, it's Dodge or Chrysler.

I think Toyota is just f'n with the United States. They gave us the Venza aka toilet seat in Japanese.

They should be careful. Next thing you know, the neighborhood will be filled with them. Crime rates will soar and they'll all want free periodic maintenance.

Isn't Chevy coming out with a new minivan themselves? I think it is called the Cracker. Only comes in white, radio only gets country music, it will be the first minivan with no backseat and the doors lock automatically everytime it is driven near MLK blvd or Detroit.

Quite well, actually. The "Nova didn't sell" thing is an urban myth: Snopes.

2012-07-24 09:27:30 PM
Not a problem. I looked at the pic in tfa, and the chances of this one being sold in the U.S. are somewhere between 'zero' and 'less than zero'.

/still want a Sienna hybrid

Wow, that's almost as bad as the supermarket chain named "Ralph's" which in English is slang for "to throw up". You'd think a company from America would research what words mean in the local language before coming up with a name that can't have any meaning other than the silly or offensive one.

/Sometimes you just have to call a gardening tool a gardening tool
//Though truthfully, I only use a s***e when pooping in the woods

We should export a car over there. I'm thinking the Chevy Nip.

That is the silly thing, the car is for the Japanese market, not American so Toyota would have to worry about something that can be construed as a slur here in the US when the car will never even sell here?
