Not gonna happen for her. She was a cute kid, and a reasonably decent actress. But she only had about a year or two of being an attractive woman before the drugs and the plastic surgery took over. Once you add in the inaccurate-but-true Hollywood "fact" that women over thirty are mostly only cast to play the mother of the ingenue-du-jour? Sorry. Stick a fork in her.

For his part, Downey has always been good-looking, and even though he's older, he's aged a LOT better. And, he's a man, so he'll work as long as he wants to.

Look, what I'm saying sucks, but it's also true. So, whatever.

Love me some RDJ. He's one of the few stars who realized he got a second chance, and embraced it.

Yeah see, he's actually talented and he had done a lot more before his downfall than her.

This. You better believe he's a professional when he shows up to work. For all the prima donnaism of Hollywood actors, the real stars know they need to get sh*t done and done right. That provides longevity.

The guy could always act, unlike Hohan. He was amazing in Chaplin...and once he got clean, all he needed was to stay clean and have success in a role for the studios to trust him again. He's been very upfront about his problems in interviews...always taking responsibility (i.e. he sounds like a recovering addict) and grateful for the 2nd chance. I'm glad he turned it around...but like any addict...he'll always have to fight it.

He has Mel Gibson to thank for that point. When they were casting The Singing Detective, the director wanted RDJ but nobody would insure him. So Gibson put up the cash for him, as well as negotiated that 40% of RDJ's salary be held in abeyance until the end of filming so that the studio would agree. That 40% clause was still in his contract for Iron Man (don't know if it was still necessary for IM2 or Avengers).

His wife has hired someone who follows him around and keeps him out of trouble and away from other shiat that will end his career, since 2005. Downey doesn't have the power to fire this person. That helped him turn his career around. He's talked aout it in a few interviews. He's lucky to have someone who cares about him and keeps him straight.

I went to the website Crazy Days, Crazy Nights and read about some of the "behind the scenes" stuff about her life (a lot based on rumours in Hollywood) and now I don't feel the urge to make fun of her anymore. Not as often, at least. Talk about a F*cked Up life.

She's an easy target, because she's a "star" and a woman, so the gossippy biatches on the Net and elsewhere feel free to go after her.

Last I heard, Tom Cruise was the most valuable star in Hollywood, based on his $75 million in earnings over the past year as opposed to $35 for the next one (who wasn't RDJ, iirc.)

2012-07-24 05:34:46 PM
It's kind of a bummer he bottomed out when he did, because he was pretty good in Ally McBeal.

Of course, he was on so many drugs, that explains why he was on Ally McBeal in the first place.

But damned if he hasn't made the most of his second chance.

Also, RDJ had time to have a second chance. Lohan really won't. Her career is based on her looks. Each year, her looks fade a little more and her window of opportunity as an actress shrinks. RDJ didn't have that problem.

It also helped that around that same time Val Kilmer gave him the script for Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which he loved, and told him he would have to be sober for a year before writer/director Shane Black would agree to cast him in the lead.

Which "second chance" is everybody referring to? There were so many. Good on him anyway.

Don't forget, RDJr plays a character who has also hit bottom, and has fought back to the top. "Demon In A Bottle" is still one of the most important stories in Iron Man's history.

He had more than a second chance. Dude's had 2 strikes and a whole lot of foul tips.
I think he had the same judge in the 90s that handled Tommy Lee and Scott Weiland.

Good that he's making the most of his sobriety, though.

don't forget Less than Zero... where he was addicted and so far in debt that his dealer was pimping him out as a male prostitute... I'd say that'shiatting pretty close to bottom.

LiLo was a cute kid, but not a particularly talented actress. She now looks like someone who was kicked out of the house at 14 and made her living on her back. Drugs and alcohol are a problem, but add that to crazy and untalented, and moreover her family is never going to be of any use to her recovery. If she ever lives to be RDJ's age, maybe she can play some bit parts, but she's pretty well done for.

RDJ on the other hand was always very talented. He's made a remarkable come back from his demon addictions, and now he's reaping the rewards. Having a support network of other talents and a wife that helps make sure he's not faced with unnecessary temptations, and he's got a long successful career coming to him.

Everyone pretty much summed it all up:

He was a great actor before his downfall--way better than Lohan.
He's a guy, so has more options as he ages.
He did small movies before Ironman to prove he was reliable.*
He genuinely values his current success.
He basically played himself in Tony Stark, which was brilliant casting.
He's still one of the best actors out there, and that takes hard work.

*Which Lohan is messing up big-time with her lame Liz Taylor TV movie--possibly her last chance.

Lohan was a very good actress. People now underappreciate her previous acting ability, probably because she no longer has it.

It's really too bad. I was rooting for her for a couple of years, because addiction is a motherfarker, but she's burned up any good graces with her repeated DUI offenses and immature, irresponsible behavior and apparent sense of entitlement.

But she *was* very good, once.

The sexism in the thread is palpable, but it's also the sad truth, so I'm not holding my breath for Lohan, I hope she pulls through though
