Whoa.

We lycanthropes are a much nicer lot. We buried gramps with Snausages, Kongs, and PetCo gift certificates.

Fun fact - the whole point of the stake/rod through the chest isn't to kill the vampire. It's meant to nail the vampire into the ground so it can't get up.

PSA for those of you considering reading Dracula the Un-Dead by Dacre Stoker: Don't. Just go read the original again. You'll feel more accomplished.

Meh ... in some of the original vampire folk lore a vampire only lived for about 40 days. You know what else only lives for about 40 days? Somebody infected with rabies.

That is right a vampire is just some asshole with rabies and delusions of grandeur.

Considering how much iron cost in those days, this was no joke to the locals. It's also possible this was royalty of some kind because he was buried under a church and the faith of the congregation was expected to keep him in his grave. Vampires were usually buried at crossroads and then forgotten in those parts.

I was reading a criminal profiler's book and he suggested that the legends of vampires and werewolves could possibly come from serial killers way back then. People finding bodies that were slaughtered in some horrific manner - that may have been the way the populace dealt with crimes like that. So far removed from out of the ordinary...

The only way I'd write something about vampires is if I used some of the old, weird Slavic folktales; such as, leaving whiskey at the vampire's grave ensures it won't come back to bother you, or emptying a bag of coins on the ground will stop the vampire, because it will obsessively count each one while you get away.

Also the movie "Stigroi" is closer to any old vampire story than any vampire movie ever made.

For some reason, sounds like they got their vampire lore tied up with bigotry against a particular early Abrahamic religion...

Sorry, had a little rabies scare myself - symptoms can appear from days to years after the bite.
Once the symptoms appear you go from human with a headache to spastic zombie to coma and then dead.

That iron rod has been rusting away for 700 years. After 700 years look so good you will not.

Pretty cool find. Lots of books talk about what people would do with suspected undead, but it's fascinating to see actual evidence.

Vampirism was actually an allusion to STDS and sex. It was considered improper to speak openly in texts about sex, so the biting on the neck was just a way of saying they had sex. Its also where other parts of the lore come from... IE you have to invite a vampire into your home... same thing, they're saying you willingly allow strangers into your home for sex, being a slut is a choice you made.

Like most old folk tales, it was meant to scare people into behaving. In this case to stop you from whoring around town and catching bad diseases.

As stated above, I would also love to travel to this part of Europe. Anyone here ever been to Bulgaria? I have an aunt who went a while ago and if I remember correctly, she didn't have a good trip. Granted, she is a lesbian from the US so (I am completely guessing here) perhaps that had something to do with it. I bet the women there are nice looking, but I'd reckon not a lot of gay pride over there?
