Ha I dunno which is funnier -- the fake $1 bill, or the perfectly legal $2 bill I almost got arrested for spending at a Taco Bell about ten years ago. They called mall security on me, he handcuffed me & called the cops. There were about 30 people standing around, and I was the *only* one who knew the $2 bill was legit -- until the cop showed up.

He was like "WTF?"
They: "This guy just tried to buy food with this..."
Cop: "So?"
They: "It's a TWO DOLLAR bill!"
Cop: "Yeah, I can see that. What's the problem?"
They: "Well, um, it's a TWO DOLLAR bill. There's no such thing as a two dollar bill."
Cop: "What in the hell are you talking about? It's perfectly legal. It's a two dollar bill."
They: "There's no two dollar bill!"
Cop: etc...

I got a free burrito, and one of the best laughs of my life.

Don't know much about counterfeiting, but the security measures only really matter if someone checks them. Any time I've dropped a $20 at a bar or corner store or whatever... they've never checked anything. Of course, if I really wanted to save a ton of money doing so... it would be kinda difficult because I visit the same few bars and stores every day. I imagine I could pull it off for a few months at most before getting caught.

Think about it. If he had tried to pass a 20 or higher the clerk would've likely checked the bill on the spot, and it's game over. So the guy gets creative. Simple enough. You take a handful of regular ones and mix in a 'bonus' single. You go to the grocery store and you buy something, like say a pound of hamburger that comes out to 5 cents over the dollar figure, so 3.05 say. You pay with your singles, collect 95 cents in change (pure profit) and then go sell the hamburger on the black market for cost. Lather, rinse, repeat.
And it could get better, maybe once in a while you find a pound of hamburger for 3.02 or 3.01... Of course, you'd want to case the place first to make sure they don't have penny dishes obviously.
But this way, you could keep the ball rolling indefinitely.

That would be stupid, because no one checks $1 bills at all. I bet at most places, you could scan and print some $1's and stack them in between real ones, and most of the time pass them off easily.

I received an old style 20 (1977), without any security features, from the ATM today. I think I'll hold it till I come across an 18 year old cashier, then act very suspicious when I hand it over.

I wonder... why don't counterfeiters make $20s in the style of 1970's money? Or do they? Any money ever issued is valid at face value.

The secret service does not take any counterfieting lightly. I don't think your sentence, if convicted, would be *that* much different depending on how much money you counterfeit.

I actualy had a real 2 dollar bill experience. At a Taco Bell, no less.
I paid using a combination of other money, and trusty $2 bill.
The lady says 'I can't accept this."
