I give the same amount of respect to people that spell Fox News as Faux News, as those who spell Microsoft as Micro$oft. Which is to say; none at all.

And this story is about ABC, not Fox, so give it a rest.

You are talking about forums in which people call the president of the US "0bama" and his current election opponent "Mittens". If the asshole that populate this place can't even dredge up an iota of respect for our nation's leaders, why do you think they'll show any effort toward respecting a mass murderer?

I don't mean to be that guy, but wouldn't it technically be the National MINISTRY OF AGITPROP radio? The Politburo was concerned with the day to day running of the country.

While you are correct, I still contend that Politburo is the way to go because it starts with a P and it sounds more communismy. Accuracy is not important in the children's insult game.

Uh, if he were autistic he wouldn't shoot up a room full of people. He'd ignore a room full of people. Autistic people aren't interested in other people. Though, there's no telling where on the spectrum he falls.

Honest Bender: Uh, if he were autistic he wouldn't shoot up a room full of people. He'd ignore a room full of people. Autistic people aren't interested in other people. Though, there's no telling where on the spectrum he falls.

Actually, it depends on where he lies on the spectrum. "Autism" is a pretty broad label encompassing dozens of diagnoses. One person who has autism can be high functioning, but with crippling social anxiety and interaction problems, and the other can be pants-shiattingly impaired but act out inappropriately around strangers.

Chinchillazilla: I have Asperger's. Of the many people I've known with Asperger's, it seems like a higher-than-average proportion of them seem to be very angry. It's not even most of them, just that it seems like more of my Asperger's friends are angry than my neurotypical friends.

I personally don't think we're any more likely to act on that than NT people. Possibly even less likely, because I think people with Asperger's might be a little more afraid of jail than others, because of our need for routines we can control. And we are quite capable of compassion and empathy. We're not robots. But sometimes we probably give off that impression, which baffles NT people and leads to statements like this.

Oh so you have that made up condition used to sell more meds. Good on you for playing along.

There's some credibility to ASD leading to violence like this.

Certainly it's ignorant to label this particular guy as ASD at this stage, but it does provide a potential mechanism as to the deranged individual's development of depressed-rage, which is what almost always is the rationale behind mass casualty incidents, such as this. Basically, the ASDer seeks companionship, but is unable to maintain meaningful interpersonal relationships. They are seen as awkward, bizarre, and just unattractive, be it to the opposite sex in a romantic sense, or potential friends, especially in high school, where there is often a de facto caste system, with the awkward individuals at the very bottom. There is also an element of almost sociopathic callousness towards others in some of these individuals as well; which is interesting, because they often still seek out and desire companionship, despite having zero concern for others' well-being - it's almost as if some of these individuals view others as playthings, without which, they cannot be happy. This creates a sense of isolation in the individual, and can ultimately lead to depression. They will often become very resentful of others because of this, and then they can potentially enter into the depressive-rage cycle, which, again, is what usually leads to these mass-casualty incidents.

I recall there was a lot of controversy regarding whether or not Cho (the VT shooter) had Asperger's, but I don't recall the resolution of that debate. I do recall, however, that Dr. Michael Stone, a forensic psychiatrist, indicated that he believed Cho to have had Aspergers in one of his novels.

gadian: It's obvious that James Holmes isn't right in the head. I don't think it matters what variety of disturbed he is, he surrendered to police at the scene as the shooter. There really is no debate on his innocence or guilt. There are some mitigating circumstances in every crime, I suppose. But he admits his guilt and has not been ruled too incompetent to do so. So really, his mental and emotional hang ups don't matter. Doesn't matter if he's too autistic to relate to the world, doesn't matter if his IQ is 120 or 70. Doesn't matter if his mommy raped him. He's guilty beyond doubt, even to himself. Sentence him and let it rest.

but this is America. We must find someone, SOMETHING to blame. It's the American way.

I've never understood how anyone can claim that someone doing this is sane at all. I mean, it falls well outside what I imagine most people define as "sanity" to come up with a plan that involves killing even one person, not to mention one that places all of your neighbors in danger as well as a couple of hundred moviegoers.

That's just not "sane". I think that, at best, we might see this guy indefinitely detained for his crimes but I seriously doubt there will be an actual death penalty charge laid against him. There's just no way it would legally stick.

Then again, this is America, where up until recently we were shoving needles in the arms of mentally deficient people and offenders who were minors at the time of the crime, so who knows?

Insanity is not a medical term - it's a legal one, which is currently, in most jurisdictions, largely defined by the M'Naughten Test and the IDA of 1984. From a medical standpoint, yes, he clearly is sick. But from a legal standpoint, it seems that there is a very strong pile of evidence which makes the case for his "sanity."

listening to bbc radio 4 now, talking about impact of combat roles on soldiers and difficulties adjusting to lower pressure environments, and the need for better training in regard of de-stressing. that's something that is pretty well-documented. not sure how directly that translates to the non-military world and wider society, but we live in a society that more and more seems to reward people who thrive under pressure, and where things like video games even allow people to introduce (often quite intense, or so it seems to someone who doesn't play them) significant additional pressure into their own environment for very little real reward. things like taking time out to unwind, building worthwhile relationships with people around you in the real world, and, for me, something like sport or drawing or something like that, are all key to building a balanced life and maybe as people move their lives increasingly online, these things are getting lost too often - particularly for people who have existing problems that mean they find doing these things difficult anyway. it's trite to acknowledge that we put troops under, sometimes overwhelming, pressure and that this requires a support network after deployment. whilst what the tfa person did falls well outside what we expect from people within society, maybe we need to acknowledge a similar problem as per the military in wider society?
