I would rather use Unity, and Unity makes me want to blow my dad's computer up every time I use it when I am visiting.

I figured out what the inspiration for Metro was:

McDonald's point-of-sale system.

Microsoft is just Idiocracy-proofing their UI!

Running the 8 preview (under Parallels, lol). So far, I've barely touched the Metro UI; straight to Desktop for me, which looks suspiciously like a 7 environment. *shrug*

I've run the Preview quite a bit, and after a few days got used to it. It has its ups and downs. I certainly don't hate it.

All of that said, the idea of rolling it out enterprise level makes me want to kill myself. Unless something significant comes up that requires our doing so, I won't recommend we move to 8 until 2016-2017 (Mwaha. Win 9?).

Unless it's somehow successful enough on the home level that I don't have to train everyone on how to use it.

Windows 7 was one of the better things to happen over all business-wise (sorry, folks, XP doesn't hold a candle, despite the fact we all used it so long -- for the average user anyway). I can't imagine that 8 is going to be even remotely close to that level of improvement.

Fluorescent Testicle: Frankly, I'm still annoyed at being forced to upgrade from 7 to XP. Yeah, it looks nice and it runs well, but it has so many points of annoyance behind it (the search function sucks, the folder windows suck, those popups every time I try to open Photoshop suck, the lack of software compatibility sucks, that motherraping mini-preview that pops up every time I rest the cursor on the taskbar makes me want to murder things)... Forget 8 and its horrific phone-esque UI, I just want them to start offering XP again.

/Or, ideally, some new version that looks and acts exactly like XP with the stability of 7.
/Only person on Earth who prefers XP to 7, but hey.

well somehow about half my post was eaten by the fark monster.....

Windows 95 was not exactly great, but it was better than 3.x in every measurable way.
Then the second release of 95 added USB support,
then 98,
then 98 SE,
Me was an improvement over 98, but a waste of time IMHO
XP was a huge leap forward
Vista was fine, provided that you were willing to spend 20 minutes tuning it to work the way you wanted

I happen to disagree.
Windows 3.xWindows 8.

Windows has improved dramatically with every release, until now. Windows 8 is a leap backward in terms of usability and looks like shiat. But hey, maybe they can make some hipster tools happy like Apple does.

LasersHurt: This just in: I didn't say anything about Market Share. There is sooooo much more going on in Mobile than just Market Share.

Right. But all *I* said was that the platform was unpopular. And you accused me of "talking out of my ass." So, I proved that I was right. I'd say that anything that claims less than four percent of market share, especially when the two biggest claim roughly 50% and 30%, can accurately be called "unpopular." Hell, Windows phones are behind BLACKBERRY right now, and you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a "RIM is dead" story these days.

So...no. You can't have mobile goalposts. Not yours.

Personally I had no issues with 95 or vista. It was just a matter of knowing how to work on your own system, vs crying because you dont understand puters

Which version of 95 though, 95a or 95b (aka OSR2)? The majority of people with issues on 95 were using the original release, the majority who had zero problems with 95 were on OSR2.

I had 95a and it liked to eat it's own system files.

That's the idea. You liked Seven? So buy eight as we shove stupidity like iPad inspired interfaces at you.

Metro is far worse then an iPad/Android style interface (which for phones and tablets, works just fine).

I disagree most strongly. This can display a wealth of information at a glance - dumb icons can't, and this surpasses the usefulness of widgets in its expandability and universality.

I am inclined to agree, icons don't add functionality you might as well be looking at an alphabetized list of applications in the start menu rather than have icons on your desktop. If my local weather app turned red when there was a sever storm warning (like it did on my old ass blackberry and doesn't on my iphone 4s) I might click on it to read the details.

I really don't see where the hate is coming from; it's not that bad. I like the whole tile interface on touch devices. It doesn't really make sense for non-touch systems.

Overall, I think Windows 8 is ok. There's no compelling reason to upgrade an existing computer, but it'll be fine on new machines and better on touch-based systems.

//I haven't tried the preview, so I have no idea how messy it is on the desktop, but I'll give it a try when it's released.

For the most part once you turn Metro off (as much as you can turn if off) you come face to face with something that looks suspiciously like Windows 7.

I'm not totally convinced it'll do THAT well, it just feels like it's going to hit the same problem Vista did (to one degree or another): the majority of people wanted XP-SP4 (replace with 7-SP2) and not a whole new OS.

Metro itself looks to be a good tablet UI and some of it's features would be quite nifty on a desktop UI.. but it feels like Microsoft have just wholesale copied the tablet UI in to the desktop source tree and gone "Done."

I get that Microsoft is trying to create a unified "look and feel" across its entire family of products. I really do.

But most people, including me, HATE the goddamned clunky, obnoxious Xbox 360 dashboard...

Plus, the sales on those horrid Windows phones continue to plummet, since the OS is unpopular...

www.microsoft.com

And since those are two already-pushed-out interfaces using this ugly-as-sin "huge solid-color tile" motif, it STUNS me that they're persisting with such an unpopular design for their flagship product.

Windows 3.1 was a pile of crap.
Barely touched NT 3.5.
Win 95 was fancy and crappy (for a desktop OS- worse for business).
NT 4.0 Workstation was a nice OS. A bit convoluted, but muuuuch better than 3.1 or Win95.
Win 98 SE was nice and I avoided the ME mess.
Win 2k was a pretty solid OS. Couldn't really game too much with it, but that thing was otherwise pretty solid.
Win XP took some getting used to. I didn't like the UI changes. But it grew on me.
I skipped Vista after supporting it as the vacuum of resources it was.
Win 7 seems to be ok. I've only dealt with it a few times.
No idea about Win 8. Looks like Unity gone wrong. And I hate Unity.
