Well... it's very impressive, yes, but we need to talk about Steve Jobs now.

If you pick up a competitor's products thinking they are automatically better people, you're a fool. BTW Jobs isn't the only person who has worked or still works for Apple, and most of the people working at Apple probably have a far less fuzzy impression of him than his fanboys.

I guess I can respect your position if you'd similarly boycott their products if you found out about less than stellar interpersonal skills of anyone running those other companies, but only if you're willing to go that extra mile.

After the birth of his first daughter in 1978, Jobs denied paternity by claiming that he was sterile. He left his wife and daughter to scrape by on welfare, practically starving to death to save money for the baby's medication.

Just because he made a lot of money doesn't change the fact that he's in hell.

2012-07-24 11:08:35 AM
No: because of it. I was making a great deal of money almost right out of college when I was being a pedantic, uncompromising, hard-nosed asshole. But I was fair about it. However, the money didn't interest me and my lack of satisfaction in life lead me to mellow out. Now I realize that most people are assholes: oh, sure, I knew that there were a lot of assholes out there, but I've realized even the people with whom I enjoy spending time are pretty much just assholes, too. And these are the NICE people.

Every time I see someone's corporate profile pic where they are sporting the thoughtful-chin-on-softly-clenched-fist look, I want to impress my firmly clenched fist about three inches above theirs.

Nine times out of ten it is a Tech VP or CTO type. Or marketing.

Crotch, my boycotting apple products has nothing to do with jobs, someones personality doesn't dictate if i like their products or not.. I will share why i don't like apple products..

actually i started writing and stopped... wont bother cause it will just be a mess:) BUT.. my iphone was slow.. i never once in a year had a phone call last over 2 minutes without getting hung up on.. AT&T says it was apple... apple people say its at&t... fark em both:) and i have had bad experiences with macs i have to work on.. just slow and a horrible OS...

One of us misread IceTech's post - I got the impression from the last sentence that the reason for "never buying an Apple product again" was because it was the "worst year with a phone I ever had" not because of a personal dislike of Jobs. That was a completely different point.

I consider myself a pretty nice guy, but I can still act like kind of a dick at times.
I don't think having a couple billion dollars would make it any easier to be patient and tolerant of others - but I would be willing to give it a try.

I had an iPhone 4, and never had any problems with it. I have a Galaxy S2 now, mostly for the extra screen size, but I'm also partial to android.

Computers and gadgets I own

HP computer quad core AMD system (my gaming system)
MacBook Pro
iPad (3rd gen)
Nexus 7 tablet
Samsung Galaxy s2 phone

Jobs was an ass, but so are a lot of CEOs
I just use whatever product gets the job done for me.

I have a macbook air that is like working on dial up most of the time, and the Dell right next to it works fine.

Apple stuff is generally designed well but by no means significantly better than the alternatives.

We should get a Six Degrees game going with this:

Steve Jobs along with Woz started selling the original Apple PC back in '77.
They got the funding to do so from Mike Markkula, who made his money at Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel.
Fairchild in the early 70's was the first company to produce a charge-coupled device (used in digital imaging), based on it's invention at Bell Labs.
Bell Labs, of course, was doing a ton of early computing work/research at the behest of the...Federal Government!

Only if you leave out the first part.

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen."

He was staunchly opposed to Apple giving to charity. They only started doing it after he died.

Despite his penny-pinching ways, he's a cultural hero, and Bill Gates, the man who's donated more than farking $25,000,000,000 of his own money and started his own charitable foundation, is the rich dickbag.

I think the sad fact is that starting a company is a daunting amount of risk. The people most likely to even try it are assholes who failed at everything else but are still convinced they are awesome. Also, there are assholes who just like to push people around so starting a business is really their only path (unless their parents are uber wealthy and they can buy an ivy league diploma and become executives). Once it's started it is the employees, not the owner, that determine its success.

Not sure how society can deal with this but someone should probably come up with something. These people should NOT have power.

2012-07-24 11:21:22 AM
If certain people are deserving of cancer, then Jobs was one of them. The scorched-earth, my-way-or-the-highway philosophy that he lived by and pushed at Apple is proving itself to be a massive detriment to the tech industry. In a generation or two, people aren't going to look back at him as a revolutionary. All he'll be remembered as is some asshole who brought a few nice products to the market, and then used his questionable ethics, corporate power, and legal bullying to stifle as much innovation in the marketplace by his competition as he could. He and his company will be seen not as leaders in technology, but as obstacles that ultimately left mankind less advanced than we would have otherwise been. Fark him.

He wasn't belittling individual effort in any way whatsoever, and there's no such thing as innovation done outside the collective community. Anyone who innovates (even if they do so without other people around them for a while) builds on the work of countless thousands of other people and institutions from past decades or centuries. That is unavoidable in the same way that breathing oxygen that's previously been in someone else's lungs is unavoidable.

What Obama was arguing against (not denigrating, although I'd love to see him take the gloves off here) is the insane right-wing fantasy that the Job Creator (PBUH) works his or her economic magic in a pure void formed by their strength of will, and the second they get any icky government or nasty ol' society on them, their spell fizzles and jobs will not appear.

/But I'm sure you knew that.
