The funny thing about the right's embrace of Randian philosophy is that it's an inherently, and aggressively atheistic philosophy fundamentally incompatible with the right's theocratic beliefs.

This is a Christian nation with a Christian history that has been successful largely because of Christian values.

Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,-as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen [Muslims],-and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan [Muslim] nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

the Treaty of Tripoli says otherwise.

And in case anyone doesn't find that relevant:

This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the constitution or laws of any state to the contrary notwithstanding.

The more you convince people that something natural and normal is, in fact, not natural and normal, and you get them to repress natural behavior because of it, the easier their minds are to control and make them susceptible to believing in imaginary sky friends.

"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

Weaver95: As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion

For the sake of accuracy, it is not wrong to say that the United States is a culturally Christian nation. Most Americans are Christian. Christian churches served a vital role in our history in terms of shaping communities, and for many Americans they remain a central focus of their social life.

Which is to say: Townhall is still populated by idiots and is completely wrong for many other reasons. Most of the so-called "Christian values" are not uniquely Christian, and the role they played in our success is entirely debatable (the single most significant factor in the success of the US was the vast supply of unexploited natural resources).

Errrr.......no. The Founding Fathers, whom dickweeds like this guy claim to know a lot about, had had enough of the divine right of kings, and made damn sure that the American government would be secular, and indifferent to the practice of religion among its citizens.

2012-07-24 11:15:24 AM
Meanwhile today, we have a record number of Americans receiving food stamps and disability payments, people are protesting in the streets because the government won't pay off their college loans for them, businesses want the government to bail them out, and many Americans would rather let future generations live in squalor rather than receive a few less dollars in Social Security and Medicare payments per month.

there are so many things wrong with that statement...I could spend all day unraveling them and still find more to fix.

JERRY FALWELL: And, I know that I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say "you helped this happen."

PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I totally concur, and the problem is we have adopted that agenda at the highest levels of our government. And so we're responsible as a free society for what the top people do. And, the top people, of course, is the court system..

JERRY FALWELL: Pat, did you notice yesterday the ACLU and all the Christ-haters, People For the American Way, NOW, etc. were totally disregarded by the Democrats and the Republicans in both houses of Congress as they went out on the steps and called out on to God in prayer and sang "God Bless America" and said "let the ACLU be hanged". In other words, when the nation is on its knees, the only normal and natural and spiritual thing to do is what we ought to be doing all the time - calling upon God.
PAT ROBERTSON: Amen

I honestly think that's why Christians want to pass most of their crazy laws. For example, if homosexuality becomes accepted in America, it'll take all the fun out of it for Christians. They're attracted to their taboos.

This is a Christian nation with a Christian history that has been successful largely because of Christian values.

So.. why exactly does the very first point in the Bill of Rights (Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;) run counter to the first commandment? (I am the LORD thy God... Thou shalt have no other gods before me.)

You'd think a nation built on Christian principles would at least law down some laws that follow those commandments, and not go against them.

Edgar Friendly: You see, according to Cocteau's plan, I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think; I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech and freedom of choice. I'm the kind of guy who likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecued ribs with the side order of gravy fries?" I WANT high cholesterol. I wanna eat bacon and butter and BUCKETS of cheese, okay? I want to smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section. I want to run through the streets naked with green Jell-o all over my body reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly might feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiener".

I thought the "shame" section was a bit funny. I think the driving force of modern conservatism is low self esteem. If you look at Maslow's hierarchy you can see why right wingers think and act the way they do.

I'm sure more than one Farker in here is aware of some interesting parallels between LaVey's satanism and Ayn Rand's objectivism? So how can objectivism be "godly"?

I have some of LaVey's satanism books. They're quite entertaining, really.

Satanism is a well organized ethos, Bill O'Reilly interviewed this chick from the Church of Satanism and it was funny how he was terrified of her. I bet he had a priest come in and bless the studio after she left.

I have a friend of mine who considers himself to be a 'rugged individualist' and a very moral guy. He's unemployed, lives in his mother's basement (no - really!) and makes money under the table by doing soft core porn shoots for local organizations, web sites and models.

near as I can figure, the evangelicals in this country are just fine with turning America into a Christian theocracy...it's the influence of libruls, atheists, and other religions that they see as the 'true danger to this country'.
