If the rumors are true that the Red Wings offered Franzen, Filppula, and Nyquist for Nash and Scott Howson turned it down, I would probably be headed to the arena with matches and a can of gasoline if I was a Blue Jackets fan right now.

Your going to turn down what amounts to probably 1.5 times the value you got from the Rangers just because you don't want Nash back in your building 6 times a year?

Don't get me wrong, I would've HATED that deal for the Wings (Nash has been overvalued his entire career) so I'm glad it didn't happen, but my God, what was Howson thinking?

It helps when the other GM is a farking idiot. Why Bob Gainey ever thought he could make something out of Gomez still bogles the mind.

When was the last time a Flames draft pick panned out? More pressing, one that panned out and is still playing for the Flames.

Dubinsky and Anisimov are both solid 40+ pts per year players. Nash is force though and his power foward style will work excellently for the Rags.

What's the latest on the crusade for a new building? Weren't they supposed to unveil plans and/or have a vote this summer?

robertus: Seriously. I like Dubinsky and Anisimov, and I'm sorry to see them go, but that's a deal you make 100% of the time.

Absolutely, solid players both, but it's a complete no-brainer from the Rangers perspective. They've got a Cup window with a world class goalie and a strong core group of players, adding Nash's scoring without giving up Kreider, Hagelin, Stepan, McDonagh or Del Zotto is a bonanza.

2012-07-24 12:08:21 PM
The only argument I can make in favor of the Blue Jackets/Howson is this: The moves they have made this offseason (and towards the end of last season too) might not have upgraded their "talent", but it did upgrade their "heart" category. The Blue Jackets didn't just lose a lot last year, they got BLOWN THE FARK OUT in games last year, and at times it looked like Derek Dorsett was literally the only player on the ice for them who gave a f*ck. Guys like Dubinsky and Nick Foligno add some grit.

That said, The Blue Jackets still can't draft for shiat, and I don't see this team scoring many goals at all, so they'll probably suck...

Ugh, you're gonna get me started? Ok, here goes, I'll try to keep it short:

I'd be shocked if it happens at this point. As background, Wang tried for years to get the Lighthouse development built. But even with private investors willing to pay for the whole thing the town government (in charge of the zoning) wanted no part of it. They stalled it for years via all sorts of bureaucratic hoops, and came back with a counter-proposal that cut back the project to pretty much just the arena. Since it's not 1970 anymore and nobody's interested in financing an arena on Long Island with nothing but parking lots in the immediate area, Wang's investors dropped out.

Last summer, in an effort to get something done, the Islanders tried an arena-only plan. It required public money and was put to a vote. As you might imagine considering that Long Island in 2011 was a highly-taxed area in a bad economy, it failed miserably. Now the county executive is trying to solicit proposals from developers, but apparently the Islanders aren't even participating. And I can't say that I blame them.

The easy fix would be to move the team to Brooklyn when the lease runs out in 2015, but the same bad economy scaled back that arena and made it pretty much basketball-only. It's possible to play hockey there, but the seating would be U-shaped with little or no seats at one end. Probably still better than the Coliseum, but it might not be ok long-term.

So yeah. Limbo. At least Tavares is locked up until 2018.

KC isn't happening. As much as the Isles suck right now, they're at least putting together a decent team, and they have a long standing history in Nassau County.

It's either Nassau County or King's County.

My money right now is on the Barclay's Center in three years.

Like I said, I'm sorta surprised that Wang doesn't buy out the remaining years to move to Barclays for '13-'14. Maybe the arena itself won't be great; but it'll have some of the amenties the NVMC lacks.

Then again, could've been worse: They could've designed Barclays like the US Airways Arena.

Those arena contracts are so loaded with traps and other shiat, that won't allow you to just back out, without pretty much bankrupting part of your operation, if you wanna move out early.

If they could get out for 13-14, I'd say go for it. I just don't see it being financially viable right now.

Contract may be a bit high but Rick Nash is the 5th highest scoring forward in the league since the lockout. And he's never, ever had a decent centre in Columbus unless you count half a season of Jeff Carter. How is that overvalued?
