I have to ask this question. If childhood mortality was cut in half in Africa how many more people would there be in Africa and could African countries actually feed them?

I doubt many will survive the childhood conscription, slavery, or death squads.

Happy Monday everyone!

The problem has never been there being enough food. The problem is getting the food TO the people.

Africa is a continent with massive natural resources and they have plenty of land perfect for agriculture and farming.

Warlords in certain areas simply will not allow it.

It's remarkable that there's an inverse relationship between food allergies and the socioeconomic class of people.

Clearly its the lack of imported food that's the root of Africa's troubles. This will solve everything. All Africa needs is more adults, after all.

Funny how we could develop and build two atomic bombs, drop them and end World War II; plan and execute sending men to the Moon, but we can feed people.
Ever get the impression we serfs aren't being told everything about certain aspects of technology that might mitigate profitable conflict in certain areas of the world or solve problems of artificial scarcity?

I can just see some jenny McCarthy type getting all twisted-undies over this and try ban it to protect the children from the dangers of nut allergies so they can starve in safety.

You are right to ask this question, though it offers some speculation that may be unsettling to some. The more people we feed, the more people there will be in the future, and the worse the problem gets.

Humanity's resources are finite. Our capacity for selfishness, ignorance, greed, and suffering is not.

Plumpy'nut is effective but comes from an outside source. It needs to be mass produced. The starving villagers can't really make for themselves. I think misola is something the villagers can mostly make for themselves with available sources. (Groundnuts and millet both grow in Africa. Not sure about soy.)

Those people can't even get their shiat together with the small population that they do have. You really think it would benefit them (and the world as a whole, eventually) to ensure that they can have more and more kids? Let's ask Mexico how that's going for them.

2012-07-23 08:00:54 PM
Without infrastructure, all you have is misery. You add more food, you'll just swell the population and when there's less of something, just more abject misery.

Infrastructure creates a societal shock absorber. Aid and simple bandaid grain innovations just create more temporary people to add to the suffering.

i've been told that most countries can actually sustain their population but their goods are exported instead so the rich can get richer. i guess that's the flip side to all the aid food that is stolen and never distributed to the hungry. people just suck.

I just staved off starvation with a proprietary mix of peanut butter, sugar-free strawberry preserves, left over rainbow rotini pasta with sour cream and cut up chunks of left over hot dogs. I mixed it in a single bowl and spooned it over unsalted crackers. The food mix is called "ool."

It takes more than technology to overcome centuries of farked up socio-political institutions. Slavery, colonialism, Africa has been farked for centuries. You don't just "get over" that. It takes generations and incrimental victories to overcome that kind of devestation.

There is not only enough arable land in the world to feed the current world human population, there is currently more than enough food being produced to feed every single human enough for them to become overweight.

It's mostly being fed to farm animals.

Curing world hunger is easy. Doing so in a free-market structure, with our current meat consumption levels, is pretty much impossible. So you pay your money and you take your choice. We can have "freedom", or we can have people not die from hunger.

Sadly, this is not only something that people actually need to think about, it's something that many people consider a reasonable trade-off, just so they can continue eating meat with every meal, and paying Monsanto part of every food dollar.
