I don't know about the mandatory minimum angle, mostly because fark Harper and his jackbooted thugs and their "omnibus" crime bill.

But to me, this is NOT something that should be taken lightly or forgiven because of "cultural differences." What a farking joke of a defense that is.

It should be treated just like anyone else trying to smuggle contraband into a country. If you're crossing a border, you'd better know what is and isn't allowed and make damn sure you don't have any of it in your possession.

He called loaded handguns "very frequent" in the U.S. and "standard additional equipment" in homes and cars.

WTF? I know no one who keeps a loaded pistol as standard equipment in their car, and not many who consider them standard equipment in a home. Is this what those pussies up north think about a nation where a percentage of people aren't scared of guns? That we all must love guns so much we're unable to part with them?

People who bring their guns across the border must think Canada is an extension of the United States.

3 years.. maybe that is too much. I say ban them from entering Canada for 5 years and fine them 10,000.

Cops have told me at least once a day on average they catch an American going way over the speed limit
because they "forgot" that Canada goes by KM/H instead of MPH. And they actually get away with that excuse in court.

Three years is a bit much unless they tried to conceal it or lied about having it, or it is a repeat offense.

How bad could Canadian prison be? I bet it's better than most Best Westerns.

Plus their cars move faster in colder temperatures, which magically always seems to happen right at the border.

I know multiple people (I can count 9 off the top of my head) who are (legally) CCW at all times. I guess technically it's not standard equipment in their cars or homes because it's standard equipment on their persons.

The only "cultural difference" is arrogance. While I'm largely pro-gun (it's in the Bill of Rights, and if I respect one I must respect them all), I do get the feeling that some "gun nuts" are uppity enough to think that things don't apply to them. Americans really do think they're all a John Wayne character.

Side note: Speaking of "cultural differences," European travelers in America really need to stop feigning ignorance about tipping. I know you know the custom. Back when I lived on tips you farks would run a $200 bar tab and stiff me. Not only that, it stole much of my attention from my local, tipping customers. "Oh, in our in our country it's included in the bill!" is not an excuse. You know. You're just trying to cheap out. It's on the first page of pretty much every American travel book.

Sorry for the rant.

I can agree with this. I am an American and have no real problems with gun ownership in general, but you don't always get a do-over just because you are American and you think that Canadians are all just funny talking residents of Mayberry.

I read it as: Should Americans who bring guns with them to Canada be given a 3 year minimum jail sentence or should the crown give them a break? Subby says enjoy prison yanks

It works both ways

Why don't you just shoot 'em like you did in 1775, 1812, and 1813 you war mongering, murderous Canuks? We were just trying to liberate you. But no, you have to get all shooty, stabby and cannon firing.

No wonder you never had a girlfriend.

If you store a gun in your vehicle and forget it is there and go to Canada then tough schiat. That is not a cultural difference. That is stupidity (not the storing of guns in your car, the forgetting part).

You confuse being scared with guns by being astounded that a reasonable adult would think it necessary for everyone to have one. We don't keep them around because, generally, we don't want them. You on the other hand do and that's OK for you, it's woven into your country's highest law and it's just a thing you have so whatever. But that, the steady stream of conservative NRA bullshiat and the fact gun-related violence is rather popular down there does lead us to the conclusion that Americans, generally, are rather attached to their guns and it's not exactly unfathomable that you'll find one in a car with US plates. Occasionally people genuinely do forget they have them because they're just an ordinary thing and the next thing they know they're locked in a cell next to a guy who tried going the other way with a trunk full of Kinder Eggs.

I can just hear the derps and moans from the idiots that think that it's okay for US customs to imprison you for bringing things like fruits and vegetables because "illegal is illegal" but then see no problem in smuggling arms across boundaries on some sick twisted perverted sense of self-protection.

As an American let me say this:

If they were dumb enough to cross a national border, with guns, and without knowing the laws, then you are more than welcome to hang on to them for 3 years and see if you can make them any smarter.

They sound pretty dumb. Better make it 4 years.

You can own guns (and handguns) in Canada. A large number of Canadians own guns. Sure, guns aren't as easy to get in Canada, nor are all the same models available, but still.

I was talking to a Canadian guy, who was 25 years old at the time, a few years ago on another forum. He said something like "Thank god we can't own handguns in Canada," and was quite surprised when I pointed out you can.
