For some reason?

But many Republican leaders, including Cantor, are struggling to move past the charged battles on social issues, and to focus the party's rhetorical energies almost entirely on the economy.

Reason: They're losing on those issues.

Also accepted: Fire Island

Here's the thing, GOP.

The gays aren't going to be ok with "Well, we don't support you, but we'll stop hitting you", or "I guess, maybe civil unions are ok", or "Well, I suppose you shouldn't have your children taken from you".

The gays and their advocates (meaning, most of America) won't stop until marriage equality is enacted in all 50 states and discrimination is illegal.

And we'll all remember who stood in the way.

The ironic thing is if the conservatives had gotten behind the civil unions option, from the beginning, that's where everything would have stalled. Even most of the gay rights advocates would have been fine with that, since they thought that was the only "realistic" option.

It's because the right fought this so utterly hard that the proponents eventually decided that marriage was the only option that would ensure their rights, so that's where the debate moved. Trying to bring it back to civil unions is disingenuous and wholly insufficient.

Will Governor Bob "Vaginal Probe" McDonald be introducing him? I hope they get Louis Gomert to speak at the fundraiser too. And the Chicken Fu, er, Filet guy.

Oh, wait, I am getting tolerance confused with stimulus money. Carry on.

Not to mention that if the GOP keeps bashing teh ghey and Mooslims, eventually everyone who isn't an old, rich, white, Christian male is going to realize the party hates them and wants them to die.

On the one hand I'm incredibly cynical about this situational and hollow fakery.

On the other hand, though, I think that we should encourage the GOP to abandon their hateful and divisive dogma.

Listen, you can't really blame the GOP. Look at what the gays did that infiltrated the Catholic Church and the Boy Scouts. Do you really expect the GOP to be tolerant after they had their kids molested by this bunch?

I accept and support his statements, but remain skeptical of his motives. It's sort of a "trust, but verify" kinda stance.

Cantor has a gay friend and a Muslim friend. Who happen to be policy wonks that he met at a bar once in Georgetown. He Facebook friended them not knowing their religious / intercourse preferences. Your argument is invalid.

I know a Lesbian Republican. She's a former cop, that thinks the Democrats are too soft on crime and coming for her guns.

Yeah, I know a lesbian couple, one was very conservative. Basically after they tried to marry and her right winger dad used all the "You can have all the legal rights without being married" BS with her she finally realized that they were the party actually infringing her rights

Were, I unnoticed. The gay community is pretty conservative politically. If the GoP can at least get to the point where they don't treat gays as subhuman they can probably take a solid bite out of that voting block.

From Mitt Romney's website:

Marriage is more than a personally rewarding social custom. It is also critical for the well-being of a civilization. That is why it is so important to preserve traditional marriage - the joining together of one man and one woman. As president, Mitt will not only appoint an Attorney General who will defend the Defense of Marriage Act - a bipartisan law passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton - but he will also champion a Federal Marriage Amendment to the Constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman.

That sounds like reason to me.
