"It's devastating," Penn State freshman Gabby Collo said. "They are getting penalized for something that happened when they were 5 and 6 years old."

Hm.

But the Penn State community needs to band together and move on, said Lovins, one of dozens of people who crowded around the large television in the HUB to listen to the announcement.

"We need to come together as a student body and unite as one," she said. "We are bigger than this."

Not exactly butthurt.

No they aren't. They (I'm assuming 'they' are the football players) are free to leave and play at a different school without penalty, or keep their current scholarships as long as they fulfill the academic side of the scholarship.

The problem these people have is they are blaming the organizations handing down the punishment instead of blaming the school for how it handled the whole affair.

hahahaha, the whole Sandusky situation is not one that lends itself to much humor but it does fill my heart with joyous glee to see college kids have audible gasping reactions at the idea that their school's football team is going to be irrelevant for a while.

Sophomore Laura Lovins, who has lived in the area for 12 years and seen the impact of Penn State football firsthand, said the penalties are "premature" and that time would bring out more facts.

seriously, the facts are just way too young to act on right now. we need to protect the facts from predatory judgment until they have matured to the point that they can be acted upon in a healthy and consenting manner.

From the comments of the link

Dear PSU student and locals--Your response to this is KILLING the school. Your refusal to "get" how people think football is MUCH less important than child rape makes this MUCH worse. We who do not live in "Happy Valley" and have jobs and reputations are getting killed out here. Innocence, Innocence are YOU kidding me. The only innocence here was, WAS, the children. I prayed for the death penalty to save us and garner us a sympathy vote. No you will go to the stadium and cheer and be aggrieved and we all will suffer. But we deserve it I guess.

I saw that comment as well...it was right on the money. If the students haven't read the Freeh report, they should. They should be disgusted and enraged.

I think there's a lot of denial in Crappy Valley because the aura of Penn State football has been utterly destroyed. The idea that the grand old coach didn't know what was going on was shattered by the Freeh report. Not only did he knew, he sought to conceal it and did NOTHING to discover the victims or prevent future victims.

Good. Now the de-Stalinization process can begin. I hope this is a warning to other schools that undoubtedly give their football program special treatment.

THIS
Imagine what is going on at the big schools right now. Either working harder to bury those scandals or working harder to actually obey the law. LOL

You would have to guess that the NCAA would only increase the penalties to schools in the future.

/reality check: we KNOW what the other schools are doing right now; they are looking at the penn state roster to see which player they might be able to get.

Should have been the death penalty instead of no bowl games or post-season for four years.

Vacating wins is a joke. Turning your head away and saying they didn't happen is no solution.

No, no you're not. The cover up continued right up untill Joe Pa died. The statute of limitations on a crime does not start to count down untill the crime is no longer be actively comitted dumbass.
When will these people learn that it was the cover up that people are punishing the school for, NOT Sandusky's rapes.

Meh, maybe this is worse than the death penalty - as has been said, there might be some sympathy in that.

Now, what player who could go anywhere else will sign on to a school at which they have zero chance of seeing a bowl game? They will play football, but they will suck and lose. And be the butt of jokes. (heh... butt of jokes...)

It might be easier to not play at all.

Hey, I went to a small(ish) liberal arts school with no football team, and dammit, we found a way to be total hedonists. It just takes dedication, an iron will, focus, and a forgiving liver. Kids are too damned coddled these days.

This is what happens when we deify sports in this country, especially collegiate football. Sports is supposed to be entertainment, it's supposed to be a few hours' diversion from whatever is going on in your life, it's not supposed to be your life. I love sports, particularly baseball and hockey, and I love when my teams win and I hate when my teams lose, but at the end of the day.....it's just a win or just a loss. It's not the be all and end all of my life.

When you put mortals on pedestals, it only means they have further to fall.

I remember when Boston University cancelled the football program, and we were all "I AM MODERATELY DISPLEASED WITH THIS, AND I MAY CHOOSE TO ATTEND THE FINAL GAME, BRAH".

But we didn't say Brah, because it was the 90s, and no one said that.

Depends on what part of the decade. We were making fun of frat boys saying "brah" back in the lat 90s. Before it was cool.

Have no idea about the situation with the kid here, but, one thing I can think is if you are a mediocre football player, you can probably get much more training and playing time than you would at most Div-I schools at Penn St. now, just because they'll have less "star players" they need to get into the lineup and work on. So, to some, the Penn State fiasco probably became an opportunity in that sense. Doesn't explain the blind devotion of the tweets though, might just be some homer who grey up an hour outside of Happy Valley.

scout.com says he's from sh*tsburg georgia. but i think you are probably right about lower-quality kids taking the opportunity to jump into premier training and coaching.
