Yes, because ignoring the unwarranted suffering of your fellow human being is a perfectly acceptable course of action. Worked fine for the French in WWII...

First off, Assad ain't hitler. Don't be silly.

Second, France did exactly the opposite of that thing you said.

Ned Stark: Second, France did exactly the opposite of that thing you said.

Yeah. They just got ROFLSTOMPED by the Heer/SS because they depended on static and incomplete fortifications, and placed very little emphasis on mobility and firepower of their armored vehicles.

No. He's more Idi Amin or Milosevek.

What? You don't have those? Stunning. Well then, Do you speak Arabic? No? Shocker. So mebbe unless you do, you really shouldn't be posting on the subtle variations of meaning that an Arabic word might or might not have, because it's not the meaning YOU heard?

Somacandra: pnome: You're gonna need a lot of this to make "Jihad" mean "peaceful inner struggle":

It doesn't matter what you or a thousand academics think it means. To the wild eyed Islamist with the RPG it means only one thing.

Sort of. They're Alawites, which are a subcategory of muslim, like sunni or shia. They are apparently a subcategory of shia. Like christian>protestant>lutheran, it goes muslim>shia>alawi.

They are a small minority, but they have become very rich and powerful. Basically all this is happenig in syria because A) Assad wants to remain in power, and B) The Alawites are afraid of what will happen to them when the majorities they have oppressed for so long are no longer opressed.

Finland managed to do that by not only farking up the Red Army, but having a cadre of complete bad-asses to do so.

Yep. Its a tribal thing. Assad and his ruling party guys are largely from his Kalbiyya tribe, and more generally are Alawites, which is a mystical branch of Shi'ite Islam (although like Saddam Hussien, Assad is a Ba'athist and runs a strictly secular government)

The majority of the people in his country are Sunnis and an overwhelming majority of the rebels are from a militant Salafist strain of Sunni Islam (Osama bin Laden was a Salafist-though of the Saudi branch called Wahabbism) that also was basically the muscle behind the group that called itself "Al-Qaeda in Iraq"

There was a suggestion--it was on a news documentary shortly after Desert Storm, and you really had to read between the lines--that right before Desert Storm went into action, George HW Bush personally contacted Saddam Hussein, and promised him that if chemical weapons were used against US troops, Bush would authorize the use of tactical nukes against Iraq.

It's been 20 years, and I can't recall where I saw it, but it is a fact that in 1991, Saddam DID have chemical weapons and HAD used them in the past. So I do believe that a nuclear option is in play whenever the chemical weapons issue comes up.

I think it's US doctrine to respond to any use of WMD against US interests or allies in kind. And since the US has officially "eliminated" chemical and biological weapons from our arsenal, that means anyone who gasses US troops gets the missiles.

Although we probably still had chemical weapons back in 1991, so Bush I may have needed to politely clarify what our intentions were.

It's not illegal to HAVE WMD. It's illegal to USE WMD, unless they're used against you first. And that was my point; we don't "officially" have biological or chemical weapons, so our response to any WMD attack would be to start lobbing missiles.

Trance750: So then, why did we deem that Saddam could not have weapons? In fact, wasen't that the whole song-and-dance that Bushie-Boy gave?

I'm not one to defend anything Bush did, but there were several UN resolutions regarding Iraq's stockpile dating back to the Iran-Iraq war when Saddam used chemical weapons on Iranian troops and some rebellious Iraqi cities. That goes against the whole "can have, cannot use" policy. Once you use chemical weapons, other, bigger countries are going to revoke your chemical-weapon-having privileges.

One of Bush's problems was the process went like this:

UN: "Hey, Iraq, you aren't allowed to have chemical weapons anymore."
Iraq: "But poopypants Iran still has chemical weapons, I need to keep these."
UN: "Too bad, you broke the rules, give them up."
Iran: Nyah.
Iraq: "No!" *pout*
USA: "OK, suck cruise missiles."
Iraq: "Ouch! OK, fine, we'll get rid of the chemical weapons."
UN: "Looks like Iraq has gotten rid of it's WMD."
Bush: "Don't reckon I believe that."
UN: "No, seriously, we inspected them and everything."
Bush: "Did you look in that thar truck?"
UN: "No, retard, nobody hides WMD in--"
Bush: "That's it, I'ma gonna invade and find me some WMD."
UN: "Fine. Iraq, let us look in that truck."
Iraq: "FOAD. I already did what you wanted."
Bush: *Invades*
UN: "Iraq, that was retarded. Bush, Jesus, you're retarded. Now everyone hates you both."
Iran: *laughs*
