He did a lot better after changing the opponent to Robin Givens.

Just read about Fred Willard. They still have porno theaters? Has he not heard of the internet?

He was watching movies readily available on the internet (for pay and for free/torrent)

Tyson is going to be on Colbert tonight to talk about his Broadway show. Should be an interesting interview.

I always confuse Fred Willard with Alan Rosenberg.

It's the John Goodman / George Wendt situation all over again.

Ditto. Never got the timing down for his spinning punch. And, since you can't start right before him, I never will. Tyson I eventually learned to whip pretty quickly.

I could get to the third round and then he would literally do that spinning punch non-stop till I died.

I could get all the way through and beat Tyson and I kept records of how fast I could beat everyone. In my life, this has added up to exactly zero benefits or life advancements.*

if I'm doing that, I'm going all in and putting the ol' "up up down down left right left right B A (select) start" in there. Then I'm reserving the entire back of my stone for one of those god forsaken Battle of Olympus codes....now I'm starting to wonder if I should invest in a tomb and put the Mortal Kombat fatality combos on a wall.

And here's where I show my complete lunacy on random useless knowledge:

If you can get the timing down for dodging, he maxes out at 9 spins. If he does less, you'll lose a few counter shots dodging one extra, but it's worth it since it's an instant kill. In round 3, he'll often go for all 9, letting you get the max amount of counter punches off. Usually, that's enough to put him down.

And for those that don't know - the best strategy to open up against Tyson is to counter punch, not just dodge weather the storm. You'll cut down the number of super punches in the first 1:30 by about 60%, and you'll go into the body of the fight with him at 1/2 strength.

I've been playing Punch Out off and on for 25 years and still can't beat him. I'm lucky if I can get past the first minute and a half.

PsyLord: I've never met a person IRL that could beat that game.

It was never one of those that I thought was particularly tough. I mean, it took a bunch of tries but eventually, you did it. A few months ago, I got an emulator for my computer and played it. It took maybe 7 or 8 hours to get through it after all the reattempts. Super Macho Man was always the toughest for me. Oh, and Bald Bull was a pain in the ass, too.

Seriously, download an emulator and try it again. It really isn't as tough as even Metroid or Legend of Zelda were.

It's like the rest of the game: you just have to understand the timing. He's got a set amount of time after you punch him on the counter-punch (you get two of them) before he throws his. If you do it right you just dodge, counter, counter, dodge, counter, counter, etc., until you hit that minute and a half. Then it gets tough. :)

Zelda was never that bad, once you knew where you had to go. Zelda II on the other hand, was a real pain. I never did bother beating it.

I never played tysons version. I always assumed they were just graphically different but identical gameplay.

Now I feel better about never beating it :)

It was fun as shiat till the last dungeon. I once cheated with infinite mana and still gave up on it. (game genie)

Once you switch timings from the first 1:30 to the straight punches, it's not terribly bad. The transition can be rough if you don't adjust quickly. I even do ok at the beginning of round 2 when he throws about a dozen quick straights with no warning. I can keep the damage to a minimum there. The challenge for me is getting through the really fast jab-jab-uppercut combos late in round 3. I can beat him about 50% of the time.

As with many of the more difficult NES games, you probably either played Punch-Out enough to be able to beat it fairly easily, or you never beat it.

I have to remind myself of this every time someone lists Zelda II as difficult. I don't think of it as tough, but then, I played it a lot back in the day. Once I got good at fighting the blue Darknuts, it was easy.

I never did beat Tyson.

This is common, though. Slash can't beat himself at the end of Guitar Hero III, either.

2012-07-24 11:46:50 PM
at the beginning of the second round, when he starts with the quick jab, block and immediately body punch..block again, immediately body punch..etc. when he stops, you'll have some stars to use on him
