Even though this is stupid symbolic crap, I think I'd rather have congress doing things like this instead of actively harming the country.

They can call those waters whatever they want, no one else is ever going to call them anything other than what they have always been called. The whole thing would just be another useless pile of papers produced by the US congress.

If we're going to name something after Reagan, it should be something he's actually known for and speaks of his legacy.

I got it:

The Ronald W. Reagan National Debt.

Dear Rep. Issa,

Don't you have a 40th vote to repeal Obamacare coming up? Why aren't you getting ready for that? I heard there are still some Muslims that don't completely hate this country. Why aren't you working on crafting legislation or writing a bigot speech to read on the Congressional floor?

Sincerely,
DTMB

P.S. Fark you.

We're going to be suffering for that bastard's voodoo economics crap for generations.

This beats repeating. Reagan has done more harm to the middle class than any other president in recent history. It's slowly catching up to corporations, who will soon no longer have a customer base.

Of course they will - the middle class is growing rapidly in both China and India.

God dammit, he wasn't even that popular with the GOP when he was in office! They thought he was too much of a moderate on everything but the military!

The man screwed up A LOT, he spent the last couple years of his presidency barely functional due to senility and (surely most importantly for the modern GOP) he raised taxes a half dozen times. The massive, concerted effort to make Reagan some sort of conservative saint is truly one of the more bizarre things in modern history. Why did they suddenly decide he needed to be deified, and not Ford or George HW Bush?

Don't forget, Reagan single-handedly brought down the red menace that was the USSR, riding on his faithful steed while blasting communists with his semi-automatic hand gun. Those damned commies trembled at the sight of him and the country dissolved in fear.

I don't think the GOP deifies Reagan because he was great; they do it because he is all they have. Without Reagan, who would they hold as the archetype for a president? W? He lost two wars and destroyed the financial system. H.W. Bush? He raised taxes? Nixon? You dolt! Eisenhower? One term and warned against the military industrial complex. Hoover? He's too closely tied to the Depression. Coolidge, Harding Taft? No one knows what they did. Roosevelt? He's be a good choice but he was president over 100 years ago. Republicans have to idolize Reagan because Reagan is all they have.

One eight-year term.

Ike was also a general, a socialist, hated John Birchers, had a huge top tax rate (I know - deductions and all, but it still counts), was leery of Nixon's... Nixonian tendencies...

Today's GOP might explode their heads if presented with the Eisenhower option. Though, as we're seeing with Mitt (and, ITT and for the last 30 years, we're seeing with Reagan), they might just ignore those things that are inconvenient to the narrative.

// didn't the end of Regan's terms in office coincide with Iran-Contra and S&L?
// what separates that from W - the Iraq debacle and the market collapse?

Brontes: Sock Ruh Tease: Brontes: Can a conservative please explain what Reagan did that was above and beyond other presidents before him?

Not a conservative by any stretch, but my opinion is that Reagan is the anti-Obama. No conservative Republican has ever really been as charismatic as Reagan before or since, at least in the lifetimes of most Republicans and Teabaggers. He's easier to gather around than, say, either of the Bushes, Ford, Nixon, or Eisenhower. Ironically, all of these Republicans would be considered extreme RINOs (if not liberal in Ike's and maybe Nixon's case), if they ran on their records today.

Republicans believe Obama is the idol for liberals, so they adopt one of their own. Learning by imitation.

I appreciate the response, but must kindly point to Bush Sr for being a fiscal conservative at a tough time. It even cost him the election, but he respected that his war must be paid for. It seems like Reagan and Bush Jr. did not have that concern for the conflicts they were both engaged in during their respective times in office. Bush Sr. seems like a solid conservative, as does Clinton, but not Reagan and Bush Jr.

Also should be pointed out that the beatification of St. Reagan began when Obama was probably best known as the first black president of the Harvard Law Review, if he was known at all, and long before Obama came to national political attention.

The Republican belief that liberals idolize Obama came much later and is actually a projection of their own attitudes (as is the case in so many things).

kthxbye

I would think those bodies of water would already have perfectly good names.

Besides: If you are going to rename an ocean after someone, why Reagan?
I would have suggested maybe someone from the Navy. Someone directly responsible for our dominance of the seas and the security that Allied shipping enjoys today. Maybe someone who's actions have been overlooked by history and deserve more notoriety.
Reagan might have signed the checks paid out with our money, but I'd think this kind of Honor should go to a sailor.

/I think its time Ernest E. Evans got some love.
/Maybe John Paul Jones, if you want to go old school.

1 In the beginning Reagan created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of Reagan was moving over the face of the waters.

3 And Reagan said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. 4 And Reagan saw that the light was good; and Reagan separated the light from the darkness. 5 Reagan called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

6 And Reagan said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." 7 And Reagan made the firmament and separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament. And it was so. 8 And Reagan called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

9 And Reagan said, "Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so. 10 Reagan called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And Reagan saw that it was good. 11 And Reagan said, "Let the earth put forth vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth." And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And Reagan saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, a third day.

14 And Reagan said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth." And it was so. 16 And Reagan made the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. 17 And Reagan set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And Reagan saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.

20 And Reagan said, "Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the firmament of the heavens." 21 So Reagan created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And Reagan saw that it was good. 22 And Reagan blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." 23 And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

24 And Reagan said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds." And it was so. 25 And Reagan made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the cattle according to their kinds, and everything that creeps upon the ground according to its kind. And Reagan saw that it was good.

26 Then Reagan said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth." 27 So Reagan created man in his own image, in the image of Reagan he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And Reagan blessed them, and Reagan said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth." 29 And Reagan said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so. 31 And Reagan saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.

Walker: You gotta be f*ckin me. Congress already blackmailed the Washington Airport Authority and made them change the name of Washington National Airport to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. They said "Change the name or else we're not releasing the money for improvements at National and Dulles". Reminds me of how Congress blackmailed the states to either raise their drinking age to 21 or get no Federal highway funds. Blackmail, it's illegal....except when the Government does it.

This is actually part of a bizarre Republican propaganda campaign called the Reagan Legacy Project, the idea being that, by filling the public sphere with Reagan, they'll push liberals out of the public mind, creating Republican voters through the sheer force and quantity of their political symbolism. If that sounds like weird, mystical hoo-ha to you that's because it is; the brain-boys of post-Nixon Republicanism got the idea from their favorite political movement of the 20th century, the Bolsheviks. As Grover Norquist, an early proponent of this effort, put it:

"We must establish a Brezhnev Doctrine for conservative gains. The Brezhnev Doctrine states that once a country becomes communist it can never change. Conservatives must establish their own doctrine and declare their victories permanent...A revolution is not successful unless it succeeds in preserving itself...(W)e want to remove liberal personnel from the political process. Then we want to capture those positions of power and influence for conservatives. Stalin taught the importance of this principle."

If you're interested in reading about the intellectual links between Bolshevism and modern "Conservatism" in the US, google Thomas Frank and buy some of his books.
