I'd be seriously creeped out if a total stranger called me as I lay gunshot and jonesing for morphine in a hospital.

This.

He really is a good guy. He lived across the street from a restaurant I worked at in Knoxville his senior year at Tennessee. He was in the restaurant several times a week and was an absolute class act all the time. Though I'm sure he would have given me one I never asked for his autograph. He signed for any cutomer that asked every time though.

I'm not a fan of Peyton Manning. He annoys me. However, I've never heard of him doing anything super douchey, and he seems like a pretty humble guy especially considering he was the best (if not top 2 or 3) quarterback in the NFL for a number of years.

Tebow wouldn't have needed to use a phone.

I don't think Manning qualifies as a "total stranger". They may not know him personally, but they certainly know who he is.

Big deal. A bunch of other Broncos paid personal visits.

Jack's Cracker: I don't think Manning qualifies as a "total stranger". They may not know him personally, but they certainly know who he is.

But how would they recognize his voice OVER THE PHONE?

And how did this total stranger get my hospital room assignment, even if he is Peyton Manning?

Why did he call them? Drag your ass out and go visit them.

I think it's pretty cool.

I also think it's silly to criticize him because he didn't do more.

Yeah but that was probably for their work release program.

The funniest thing about this thread is that in the "congratulate the cops" thread people were going batshiat crazy saying he cops weren't heroes. But a football player makes a phone call and everyone is ok with the hero tag?

You never know, there's all kinds of visiting limitations on certain patients and certain visitors. If he's had a staph infection in his recent past, for example.

I've had students that have been in Peyton Manning Hospital here in Indy. It was common that him, Jeff Saturday, Dallas Clark, and others would regularly come visit the kids that were there for treatment. He's one of the good guys and I'll miss seeing him play for the Colts and being around Indy.

/The United Way commercial was one of the funniest things ever.

You're gay, too, for saying that, ya jealous gay person.

I doubt any of us can find an account of Peyton Manning doing something not socially acceptable.
Or to put it delicately, doing something dickfacey. But he's not a HERO.

However, just the fact that he reached out is cool and it's ridiculous for anyone to call him out for not doing more.
I'm sure he wasn't calling the hospital and demanding patients' names so he could play a pre recorded message to them.

Any time any athlete does anything like this is admirable in my book. I'm not a Chad Johnson fan but he has done a lot of stuff off the field that could be either considered egotistical or empathetic. I choose to think that they are doing it because they care.
Just me.

As a Raiders fan, you should be happy we got rid of our winning quarterback for this guy. Manning was the best quarterback in the league... past tense.

This. It's one thing when the President visits wounded soldiers. As Commander in Chief, he's technically their boss, so it makes sense.

Am I the only one that completely forgot that Peyton Manning signed with the Denver Broncos?

Nope. It takes me by surprise every time I stumble upon a picture of him in a Donkeys jersey or some blurb mentioning it. You get so used to certain players being associated with their franchise that it's almost a mental block imagining them anywhere else. Same with LT going to the Jets for a couple of years and the sight of Jerry Rice in a Raiders jersey.

2012-07-23 04:12:45 AM
Peyton Manning signed with the Broncos? But what about that other guy who's supposed ... oh, wait, I'm thinking of the Jets.

Peyton Manning with a spontaneous audible? Why is this news?

Hero, no.
Spiffy-Yes.

Manning has always tried to do the best thing. I'm sure if someone looked, they'd find a fark up or two.

Depends on how you want to measure it. If Super Bowl rings, Brady's obviously best of that generation.

Statistically Manning blows everybody away. Including Favre and Marino.

Meh. While a fine gesture its still astounding that 8 Broncos paid actual visits and the coverage is an open plea from NFL Reporters to let them each have a turn fellating a man who did almost literally the least he could do.

Peyton's a great guy, just think it's annoying when a Broncos QB gets all the credit for a what is clearly a team effort.

Haha, thanks for the laugh on a Monday morning. Yes, Peyton Manning is a TOTAL STRANGER! Who is this jerk calling me in my hotel room? What does he do for a job?!?!?!

Honestly, I think I'd recognize his voice before he even told me who he was. Of course I'd think someone was farking with me but I'd recognize that voice.

Good for him. If I were a professional athlete or any famous person I would never let my PR person release this. It looks like pandering and a desire to be liked.

As an aside I always thought it was remarkable and something resembling humble that he's maintained a consistent and intentionally douchey character in his decades of commercials.

Peyton might not be a hero, but his head of PR might be. He's been in the spotlight since he was a teenager, and as an adult, just a few seasons away from retiring, the only negative publicity he's gotten was mooning a lady in college -- which is the only proof he's a human and not a robot designed by the NFL. There isn't a single celebrity of his magnitude I can name without at least ONE skeleton in their closet. Not one DUI, admittance to drug use, accusations of abuse in any fashion... NOTHING. Just tons of charity work and integrity while being faithful to his wife, his college sweetheart that he was introduced to by his neighbor. I mean, come on. The dude is an epic role model.

Peyton Manning gets a lifetime pass for this (new window, SFW).

Wow, do some people ever need to look in to having the stick removed.
