(The New York Times)   Genesis P-orridge of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV has become the pangendered Gollum for elderly hipsters. The preceding actually makes sense (a little) if you read the article   (nytimes.com) divider line 60

I believe Genesis P has become too obscure for hipsters, elderly or not.

I think I identify more with Jim Thirwell than P-Orridge and am I an "elderly hipster"? I don't think I am because I don't read about bands on blogs.

Throbbing Gristle is retro or classic, not hipster. If you want the obscure equivalent, you want Zyklon.

Gen and his then wife Paula were very close friends of mine when they lived in Brighton in the early 90s. The media hated him, with the News of the World calling him ' The most evil man in Britain today'. In reality he was a lovely man; generous and kind. I used to swap baby sitting duties with him until he got hounded out of the country by the vicious lies of the newspapers.

Wait. That's AL? This looks all to be from the last year or so, so I don't think you can blame heroin for this. Take a cue from Nivek Ogre, less is more.

He was a junkie for the better part of 30 years, he blew through the good brain cells in the 90's.

I blame heroin for this as much as I thank it for Twitch, LORAH, TMIATTT, and Psalm 69.

Great run of albums and the tour for TMIATTT was fantabulous, but Al's run way off the deep end.

It seems that the the NYTimes will print profiles on the strangest people walking the earth in an effort to pass them off as 'normal'.

This (nominal) person isn't normal but fringe with a strong dash of 'attention whore' thrown in.

Stay classy, NYT.

Primal Scream is another.

oof: I was really into PTV in the late 80s; record collector scum and such. I interviewed Genesis and Paula in 1990, and while Genesis had some good travel tales (I was not well versed enough in The Process Church to talk about that), Paula just seemed tweaked out of her ~mind~.

/ still get a kick from that car commercial that uses "Roman P" as the soundtrack, conveniently cutting the sample before Sharon Tate gets murdered and Roman Polanski gets it on with little kids...

I don't think anyone, anywhere is trying to pass Gen off as "normal"....
However, Genesis P-Orridge essentially invented industrial music...which went on to be extremely popular in the late-80s and 90s. There'd be no Nine Inch Nails if not for Gen, no Skinny Puppy, no Ministry or any other popular industrial bands.
