Is it really the British Open if the course looks really green and the wind is barely blowing?

2012-07-22 08:10:16 AM
Im heading out to play. Check back when the leaders are on back 9. Is the wind blowing there today as expected?

2012-07-22 08:15:47 AM
Agreed on the weather. It's been quite benign.

Nothing against Adam Scott, but I'm hoping for a bit of drama rather than him cruising to an Open Championship victory.

Looks like the wind is going at a good clip today.

Went to Lytham yesterday, tried to follow Tiger, but that was futile.

Also, Dale Whitnell is short and scrawny

Ima10urin8: who has too many clubs in their bag?

It happened in 2001 to Ian Woosnam. They were just replaying the event.

thanks, just turned it on as they were finishing up that segment.... cheers

I'd like to see McDowell take this thing. If Scott can pull it off as a front-runner, though, more power to him.

Having gone to a lot of tourneys on the west coast and several US Opens, you don't see anything if you follow one of the top names. You have a couple of other choices, though: leapfrog -- go to 3 while he's on one; wait; then go to 6 after he comes thru; etc. That let's you see about 1/3 of the Holes, but only from about 10 people deep.

OR (what I do)...

Pick 2 good locations on the course. Get there about 30 - 45 minutes before the marquee group goes thru. At the US Open at Torrey, there was a grandstand behind 5th green that Let you see 5th green, 4th tee, 3rd green, some of the second green. I got there very early to go get a good spot to watch Donald, Tiger and Lefty.

I don't understand this ESPN coverage. Is there nobody on the course worth showing? I like Duval, but enough yammering already.

2012-07-22 09:22:21 AM
1 at Lytham reminds me just how much I HATE starting a round on a par-3. I need a hole or two to get warmed up.

I hear Tiger nailed the desk clerk at the hotel last night, and then nailed the shoe polish girl this morning. If true...

Tiger's back!

So much this. It would be better if Eldrick was in the same group, but we take what we get.

I tend to do all of what you just laid out. Follow a group for a bit, park on a fairway/green for a bit, park in a grandstand for a bit. Difficulty: no beer in the grandstands. :(

Is it just me, or are they adding a "sproooiiiiiiiingoingoing!" sound effect after every shot?

That and the ShakyCam effect is getting on my nerves.

Tiger hitting that second bunker shot from a sitting position iz going to be the illustration of why he didn't win today.

Ego. Why does Phil not have the word "unplayable" in his vocabulary? Because they think "you know, I can probably pull this off. If I do, it'll be a legendary shot".

True for FIGJAM, not always for Tiger, but I guess he was in a position where he had to take a risk.

I finally feel like I'm watching The Open. McDowell has to chip 5 feet backwards in a bunker, and even that was a difficult shot.

2012-07-22 10:50:13 AM
I'm assuming the ShakyCam is because of the wind, and not because they're going for a Friday Night Lights effect?

/Hold the boat steady, dammit - I'm hungover!

The golf gods are giving Scott better lies. I think this one's in the bag.

2012-07-22 11:20:23 AM
Man, I'm hoping for a repeat of the exciting finish at the US Open, where some nobody five groups back posts a 68, then everybody puts it in reverse to post a higher number than the leader in the clubhouse.

2012-07-22 11:42:48 AM
Any chance Scott drops a few and Els makes a run at it?

Don't look now, but that could be Mark Calcavecchia or Louis Oosthuizen.

And my spellcheck doesn't like either of those last names.

HoleChicken: Any chance Scott drops a few and Els makes a run at it?

Wouldn't break my heart in the least, but I haven't seen a reason to think Scott's going to start dropping a bunch of shots. Then again, van de Velde.

What the fark was that, McDowell?

2012-07-22 11:52:33 AM
Did they warn Scott about timing?

Don't worry, Graeme. I hit that SAME shot during yesterday's round. You're among friends here.

It makes no sense to put the last group on the course on the clock.

It's rarely ever a good sign when I watch a pro hit and immediately think "hey, I have that shot". Luckily, I haven't had to contend too much with a duck hook lately.

OTOH, my cynical side immediately thought, "they wouldn't even mention the clock thing except to add drama to an otherwise punchless final round."

To paraphrase Agent Smith, this is simply an inevitability for Scott.

Every player in the field must be treated the same. Just because there's nobody behind you doesn't mean you can take as much time as you'd like. It's unfair to the rest of the field.

True for FIGJAM, not always for Tiger, but I guess he was in a position where he had to take a risk.

Interestingly enough, the R&A's "Ruling of the Day" for Thursday was Mickelson taking an unplayable on #8. There are three choices on an unplayable:
(a) Go back to the previous spot
(b) Back up along the hole-ball line.
(c) Drop within two club lengths of the ball itself
The problem is that if you're in a bunker and you use (b) or (c), you must drop in the bunker. And if Tiger took choice (a)... he'd still be in the bunker. So he was pretty well hosed.

It's very strange to see guys hitting 200+ approaches on Par 4s time after time after time.
