DON.MAC: It could be one of the many things related to the same processes that cause schizophrenia to kick in. With some sort of bipolar related issues, the adrenalin rush may have kicked him around to a different personality which wasn't a homicidal maniac. This guy was about the same age as Breivik when he started his plan but he took far longer to execute his. Are we looking at two cases of psychopathic schizophrenia? There is also the case that someone who knows a bit about neurology might notice they have some issues and incorrectly self diagnose or become too paranoid to seek treatment or actively block it.

Yeah, could be the reason he dropped out of his PhD program. He was pursuing a doctorate in neuroscience, so he obviously knew quite a bit about neurology. Maybe he recognized that he had some serious issues, so he got scared and dropped out.

I agree 100% with you and I believe that if Aurora was a right to carry town we wouldn't be having a discussion about twelve innocent lives lost. Granted, not every spree shooter booby traps his apartment either. Nonetheless, if more citizens were given the right to carry, the less incidents like this will happen.

How the hell does a guy burst into a packed theater and only kill 12 people?

Zebby: If this guy tries to plead insanity I will laugh my a*s off. According to CNN he was a "doctoral" student at University of Colorado. So there is no way he can claim insanity made him buy all those guns, ammo, chemicals and aerial shells. By the way i suspect its just a copycat crime. Do you think he just wanted to be famous for being infamous( and hated) just like Jared Loughner. Take a look at the current police photo of Holmes and you see the same batshiat crazy grin. Of course Holmes obviously put so much more planning into his horrible act.

/resists urge to bring up gun laws

Have you ever heard the saying that there is a fine line between genius and insanity?

Bad aim. If he was military he would have killed more.

Just because you have a big gun doesn't mean you know how to shoot it properly.

He was untrained, hence his belief that his equipment was more important than his training and mindset.

I suppose we're all losers for coming to Fark at this time of night on a Saturday to express our ironically clandestine senses of humor, and especially for doing so in thread about a temporary, eventually forgettable and mostly unnoteworthy but tragic event in national history.</troll>

generallyso: Why was she checking to see if she could open the door?

Because she's full of shiat? Probably heard about the explosives they found and wanted to be in the news, too.

It's been my experience that officers don't just barge into residences for complaints. I used to live in an apartment complex and the guy upstairs would physically and verbally assault his girlfriend/wife/babys mama/ etc. One night someone called in a complaint and the police officers were banging on the door for 3 hours straight. We could hear the residents upstairs moving around, but they never answered the door and eventually the police left.

Also, I don't buy this woman's story about turning the door knob and thinking twice. She mentioned later in the article that she had only seen him in passing, why the fark would she enter a strangers residence over a noise complaint about music.

He dropped out last month, he was planning this for atleast the last four months. I doubt he dropped out due to that. More likely he did not want any distractions.

Except he was wearing a bullet proof vest and had set off tear gas bombs. Anyone with a gun would have likely shot someone else and or prolonged this shooting. Arming the population will not lessen incidents like this, it will only make the situation worse.

styckx: The only thing I don't understand about any of this.. Why do you think he told the police his place was rigged like this? Believe me, I'm glad he did because no one else needed to die but I did find myself wondering why he decided to spill the beans.. Last minute change of heart?

This was odd. Maybe he got antsy to find out if phase 2 went through? He attacked at about the same time he set the music to go off. There was a report that he got a call and then went outside. This could have been an alarm set on his phone.

Devolving_Spud: I'm guessing here:

I think he wanted to destroy any evidence in his apartment, but I wonder if his larger plan was to create one hell of a diversion just before the pre-planned time he was going to open fire at the theater. Sounds like he wanted every cop, firefighter and EMT to be at one location, unable to respond quickly to what he was planning at the theater.

Or having everyone at the theater, less people would be able to respond to his apartment blowing up.

Hobodeluxe: funny how if I wanted to buy tens of thousands rounds of ammo. numerous assault weapons, gas grenades, body armor etc it wouldn't throw up a red flag to the govt.
but if I want to buy over 30 tablets of asthma medicine at a time it's impossible. and I have to show i.d., it comes from behind the pharmacists counter and I have to sign for it.

thanks NRA and GOP for keeping us safe.

It is amazing what we so heavy regulate but let by through the back door.

Thoguh: Or her decision to open the door while he was still in there, and set off the explosion could have saved 12 lives.

Just sayin'

And killed many more when his phase 2 actually went through.

ultraholland: The music stopped about 1 a.m. But within two hours, a SWAT team had kicked down the back door of the building and was banging on residents' doors, telling them to get out as soon as possible

calling the building's super would be too much work

Not all apartment buildings have supers, let alone on-site managers.

Tyranicle: CraicBaby: Tyranicle: My mindset? My minset would be to sit on my ass, ducked behind a seat, eating popcorn and slurping sugar water while twenty other motherf+ckers are pumping enough kinetic energy into the asshole to get a good headshot. I'm a pacifist.

Except that he was wearing full ballistics gear and level IV body armor. He was clearly aware that CO is a CCW state, so he went for the highest level of protection just in case someone shot back.

So what? Ban body armor? Like I said, a fully armed theater would knock him on his ass due to the kinetic energy from multiple bullets fired. The armed could then run up and give him a headshot.

You've got no concept of "kinetic energy" do you? I already told someone else to check out the North Hollywood bank shootout: Lots of cops shooting lots of guns at guy with body armor, and the robber wasn't even fazed. The cops were at the time using 9-mm, the most powerful firearm police could use at the time.

So unless your "fully armed" theater was all packing Magnum .357s and also didn't miss...no.

I'm in favor of gun rights, but a gun is just a tool, not a magic wand.

Even if everyone in the theater had a pistol on his hip, finger on the trigger, and the safety off...the casualty count would've been about the same.

Subtract a couple victims for the audience getting over their surprise in a few seconds and saving them from the gunman...and then add back in a couple, shot in the back by accident in all the confusion in the dark.

CraicBaby: Musto: Most reports state that the music was set on a timer so that it shut off at 1:00, just about the same time as he started shooting. The lady went back to bed after the music went off and was asleep when police evacuated the building. This guy seems to have planned for everything so to me this sounds like he had the timer to trigger the explosives if no one opened the door by 1:00, and that failed. I agree, once he was under arrest he was expecting his apartment to be destroyed or at least an inferno.

TFA says she phoned in a complaint and they said they'd try to get an officer out there. No one showed up, so she phoned again a bit before 1am and they said they were in an emergency situation (the shooting) and couldn't send anyone out. So, he was shooting before the timer went off. I'm thinking he was hoping the cops would show up, trigger the explosives, and then be distracted while he was shooting. Though, nbothing explains why he just stopped shooting. Though, apparently, he tried to get into the theater 8 via the emergency exit after a couple girls ran in to escape, but a dude had the prescence of mind to block the door after the girls got in.

He may also have just plain sucked at setting explosives. Wasn't like that was his field of grad studies, after all.

I wonder if he didn't warn them, but rather took credit. Perhaps he told them he was responsible for the explosion at his apartment, thinking that it had occurred? It might be interesting to hear exactly what he told the arresting officer.

he told them because he expected them to walk in the unlocked door his neighbor from beneath him found -- and decided not to open. He expected they'd all be blown to bits walking in unaware.

/did i mention he was a bit deranged?

ongbok: Just because you have a big gun doesn't mean you know how to shoot it properly.

it did jam, i read, in one of the reports (probably from rapid constant fire -- the heat produced rapidly deformed the internal hardware of the gun and a pin somewhere misaligned) and he had to go for one of his back-up weapons.

/utterly ashamed that no person or group of persons bumrushed him down to disable his trigger finger
//even if you get shot on approach you have your momentum
/absolutely no one was carrying concealed; that is the larger problem
//ad significant numbers of civilians been armed he wouldn't have got half as far

Do you people have to turn every farking thread about the shooting into a gun debate? and this is to both sides of the argument. Seriously shut the hell up already! This one wasn't even about the shooting itself, but about that asshole's bombs.
And you aren't going to change each others' minds anyway. Quit the threadshiatting.

Do you people have to turn every farking thread about the shooting into a gun debate?

Both sides of the gun control debate pick these incidents up like a live fumble in the last 30 seconds of a tied Superbowl game.

There is serious money on both sides of this.
