(CBC)   Tired of paying for television channels you don't want? In Canada you will no longer have to. But here is the catch. The less channels you buy the more you will have to pay. But still, this is the best thing to ever happen   (cbc.ca) divider line 167

That stupid, stupid brick.

Yay.
All I really need is: AMC, CBC, CBCNN, CNN, BBC, CTV, Showtime, TSN, SNET, Leafstv, History tv

Exactly.

Most of us could get away with under 10 channels. No one wants to watch anything on MTV, or the religious channels or TV Guide network or the Hystyry Channel.

I don't have any shows I currently watch that aren't on those networks, and CBS is obviously free. I'd also like ESPN 1 and 2 for football season. That's about all I'd need.

I could lose about half of what I pay for and not miss them. If my bill decreased by only 25%, I'd be ok with that. What I really hate are the commercials on channels that are not available over the air, what's up with that, I thought we paid so there would not be any commercials.

It's a definite meh this season, aside from the addition of John C. McGinley. Also, someone important is supposed to die next week.

They've nearly killed Sam like 4 times this year, so maybe. I'm thinking Nate though, since Sam keeps coming back. Can't be Jesse, he just got bumped to the title and that wouldn't be cool.

a la carte selection. The internet is forcing them to have it finally, anyway. As more people die off that can't work a web site or a search, much less an illegal download, and are replaced with people who get live streams and get looking worldwide for content. Passive TV is going to give way to choice that looks more like web site choice. Its already happening, most of my under 35 coworkers don't pay a dime for cable but have broadband and can get anything they want, legally or otherwise.

My hope is the content providers will get a clue and quit blacking out their content, or having such balkanized contractual dependencies that forces releases to be delayed, or forces broadcasts to go dark based on IP that kind of thing. Its basically forcing people who want content to break laws to get it.

*This* gets greenlit? There were several other stories more worthy than what happens in another country. Is Canada even a real country? We can't have it here in the USA, so it doesn't matter. The closest I can get here is to record only the shows I want, then waste half the time fast forwarding through the commercials. Don't taunt us with sh*t we can't have.

Universal health care, a healthy economy, higher standard of living, respect for human rights and rule of law, and now THIS.

I'm starting to REALLY envy our neighbors to the north.

Yeah, I know. It's 2012 for christ's sake-- There's simply no good reason for me to not be able to stream whatever the hell content I want legally off the internet either for free or (if it's really damn good) a small flat monthly fee.

We're most of the way there now. Netflix and Hulu+ together cost me well under $20 a month and provide me 90% of what I'm interested in.

And that last 10% is readily available on bittorrent should I choose to grab a pirate copy. Which is a real shame, because me and millions of others like me would be glad to pay a reasonable amount for the content, but some producers/distributors just HAD to be greedy douchebags so they get nothing.

One exception on availabillity is I'd like to stream BBC news because American TV news channels are all either retarded or fascist propaganda. But no! I'm disqualified because of my non-UK IP address. Why wasn't the waterhead exec over there that decided IP based blocking would be a good idea sacked the minute he made the suggestion? There's probably a near-trivial way around the blocks but I haven't bothered looking yet.

It will probably be another 20 years before the older guys who just don't "get it" retire or die off in enough numbers to allow universal IPTV streaming to finally happen.

Personally, I liked the first season of Brick. But when season 2 rolled around, everything had changed, Brick had been saddled with mortar and a stone best friend, and everything that made Brick unique had just been thrown away.

You have bricks? Talk about luxury! Not mention consistency. All we have here in grand ole Texas are tumble weeds and cowpies. Every year those danggam tumble weeds get worse every year. They're never blowing along the dirt roads like in them olden times but fly hither and dither as they gotdangwell please! It's not right. With a brick at least I would know what to expect. I added the bulk of the channels on my DVR that I don't care about to its blocked channel list -- makes them disappear from the guide, and don't have to zap past them. (Leaving ~30 channels out of ~200 or so)

Internet and cellphones still cost way more than it does in America

2012-07-21 10:57:42 PM
I do see a potential downside in this. The big problem with moving towards true ala carte programming options is that the lesser-viewed channels which are currently being subsidized in packages by the more popular options might just cease to exist. I don't want to lose SyFy (there's always the chance they'll make another Stargate series), G4 (really just for AOTS), or the out of market regional sports channels just because they aren't popular enough to stand on their own (who knows, maybe some or all of those are, I have no clue what actually brings in the ratings).

Then again, my bill has crept up pretty high again. Getting rid of a bunch of channels that I don't watch and saving some money would be welcome.

/Who am I kidding I'll still end up buying the most expensive package because it's inevitable something I'll want will be on it.
//The Newsroom alone is worth my entire monthly satellite bill, best damn thing on TV in a long while

2012-07-21 10:58:23 PM
WWE, and free NFL network, thats about the only reason i still have Directv on one tv. Sure, its easier for my daughter to have Disney Jr and Sprout and Nick, but honestly most of their shows are on netflix, so we have roku's and dvds on the living room and her toy room tv. If wwe continues to suck, and the nfl continues to grace cleveland with 10 of the steelers games a year, im sure ill cancel soon if this type of change isnt made.

There was a cool story on cars that we can't have in this country. Didn't get greenlit. The country is Canada. Home of the health insured, Kinder eggs, gravy on cheese curds and fries, Hockey, great skiing, happy and nice people, Hockey, oil, diamonds, Moose and Hockey. I would sprint over the border to be there if I could. Did I mention they have hockey?

Does anyone remember C-Band? You had packages, but there was also tons of free feeds. But you paid for what you wanted and had access to free stuff. Although you needed a 10' dish in the yard, but the pricing was fair for the most part.

Now we have "digital tv" and no access to the "wild feeds" from any where in the world.

Jesse is still on the show? He sort of killed it for me. I was really hoping he would be gone after a season or two. I quit watching in season four I think. Just something about the way he's forced into the regular trio always bothered. And also that there are other incidental people that have been killed or harmed over the years, yet it's suddenly Jesse that Michael is so concerned over ruining his life.
