Sorry. You couldn't beat Fark for the coverage of the event AS IT WAS HAPPENING.
It was posted within minutes of when it was happening.
There was a play by play from people who posted links to the scanners, as well as scoured other sites, and sources for information.

We got to hear of the saga of the parking lot lights, the mall cop, and the sprinklers before anyone.
We knew the victim count, how many were in each ambulance, and what hospitals they were taken to LONG before any other media outlet.

2012-07-21 09:04:36 PM
Fark's new motto could be "While Reddit Sleeps".

If you doubt the ability of Fark to deliver in such cases, just read the original 9/11 thread.
Or Katrina, or the tornadoes, or Aurora, or a host of other threads.

Ok, there was that thread where the guy got his balls caught in his chair slats where we didn't respond quite as effectively as we might, but hey.....

I bet you work for Fox or CNN

Thats pretty much what was on the reddit thread as well. as was explained in TFA.

I don't really see a point to arguing, both reddit and fark are known for instantly having many posts during a crisis. Communities with over 500,000 members will have that happen sometimes.

Lor M. Ipsum: I bet you work for Fox or CNN

I think we all did that night. We saw pics, clips etc, first. I'm pretty sure that other news outlets were coming to Fark to stay posted.
Of course, alot of the stuff was on other sites, but we were like one stop shopping for that information.
Hence, the word aggregator.

Anybody that's been on Fark for any length of time, can't even count the number of times they've heard jokes, direct quotes, and headlines stolen from Fark, used on everything from radio shows to news shows, and yes, even one of the photoshop entries was accidently used in academic literature.

A link about Reddit, by Time, on Fark. Someone should Digg this.

By the way, who really farking cares who was first with a thread or information. Getting the information right is more important than the panicked "well we believe that there were actually five shooters and one of them was Bigfoot, according to this Tweet" type of reporting done by most news organizations after events like this.

The coverage on Reddit of the breaking event reminds me of the kind of stuff that was being discussed on 9/11. People claimed there was a car bomb that went off at the State Department. There was supposedly a huge fire on the National Mall. People freaked the fark out and reported reams of stuff that didn't actually occur.

Threads like those are good for discussing why eye-witnesses may be unreliable in times of crisis.

Memes are one thing. Hearing morning DJ crews have a conversation that is essentially the first ten comments in a thread you read earlier that morning is another.

I'm on both websites, it pretty much went down that way on both websites.

And on both websites, 99% of the content is a link to someone else's content, and a shiatload of comments on that content.

When I was still working at a newspaper, I actually listened to some moran gush about how they were going to go to a model where they were going to get content from the community, like Digg or Fark. Wellsir, that's when I gave up any distant hope that newspapers would find a viable strategy. Free reporting was going to fix newspapers, yep yep yep, and the model was a type of website that links to traditional media like newspapers. What could possibly go wrong?

You have to get off the main reddits and subscribe to niche ones, it's much better. Reddit needs stronger moderation and guidelines for the larger reddits, but they're deathly afraid of changing anything major for fear of going the way of Digg.

Back in 2007 when Southern California was burning, my parents were on the outer edge of the voluntary evac area (Lake San Marcos), and at one point was under a mandatory evac order (small fire behind Cal State San Marcos that was quickly put out). Fark helped keep me sane during that because just about every update posted was posted here and the Fark servers were able to handle the load while the local news and government servers kept crashing.

Where does he think the idea for the stupid 'smart/funny' buttons came from? Fark is geared more for people a bit behind the times who tend to look at everything incredibly cynically. Reddit is for the ADD person with a bit more of a liberal slant. When the mods want to approve a headline, they make sure it's trending on reddit first- this one is no exception.
