I liked the pick up truck. It would be cool to have a nice sized truck that could actually fit into narrow parking spaces - which are becoming the norm around here as the lust for more potential customers outweighs the simple common sense of allowing those customers the ability to exit their vehicles once they've parked.

I'm glad we are not getting the minivan in this country. There's enough farking minivans on the roads as is. They're either driven by poor, depressed men who look as if they have been neutered. Or, driven by short women who are distracted by the 6 kids she has in the car while she's texting. I say allow drunk driving and instead get those crazy biatches off the road!

Oh, and FARK Kup and while you're at it Rodimus Prime and Ultra Magnus and that stupid ass helicopter, slash car green thing, I don't even remember that guy's name. I lose Brawn, Ratchet and Ironhide, not to mention thinking at the time Optimus as well, and I'm stuck with farking Kup? Fark. That. Shiat.

That's not an El Camino. The El Camino died in 1987, and it was a very sad day.

#2 clocked the same time around Top Gear's circuit as an Aston Martin DB 9. The sedan version is faster.

No, really I probably wouldn't pick anything later than a '72 over that, as long as it wasn't that god awful blue, but still I wouldn't call it an El Camino.

/Currently looking for a '69 SS El Camino or a '72 Cutlass

I drive a hatchback these days. Far better gas mileage and I bet I can haul just as much as that ugly thing does. Actually, I'm currently getting 3 MPG better than the EPA standards say I should be getting.

Also, hatchback cars like the Guilietta just aren't very popular in the U.S.

Ban SUVs, including crossovers, and witness a renaissance of American car making.

I borrowed my dad's F150 crew cab the other day to pick up some things from Lowe's. It was hell trying to maneuver that thing in the parking lot. Lowe's management should realize that, considering what kind of business it is, a lot of people drive big trucks and should adjust parking accordingly. Maybe parking for cars on one end of the lot and jumbo parking on the other?

I_Don't_Want_FOP

Lowe's is legally required to provide a certain number of parking spaces. That number likely exceeds the number that a cost-benefit analysis would recommend based on cost of land. Planners might want 50 car spaces, 50 truck spaces, and wide lanes. If zoning rules say 150 spaces, the store will have 150 car spaces and narrow lanes in the same footprint.

See The High Cost of Free Parking by Donald Shoup. He specifically addresses parking rules for hardware stores, and how they are broken.

I'd take a Subaru Brat over an El Camino.

Sadly, you can't find one that isn't rusted out.

The Ranger is a good one. I like the styling, but only in a sporty way.

Ok, I get the Trailblazer, car-based SUVs are stupid.

But I'm just not seeing anything else there worth having. As Ford says, we've got the F-150, why do we need a Ranger?

And the El Camino didn't die soon enough. That abomination should never have made it off the drawing board.

2012-07-22 10:56:08 AM
I've wanted one of those Rangers ever since they killed off the Sport-Trac. Unfortunately, Ford didn't replace it with anything comparable in the US and lost me as a customer.

And a good thing too.

IIRC, There were a large number of injuries due to the placement of the back seats in the Brat. Everything from people being ejected to internal decapitations leaving people paralyzed.

While it was a nice idea, if you want something like that, you are better off with a Jeep Wrangler or older CJ 5/7/8, Isuzu Amigo with the removable top, original Toyota 4runner with the removable top, or older FJ40.

Go play with a Holden in the flesh. Not the same thing. They are actually pretty useful, and fun. They have a four-door version as well.

Besides, while El Caminos didn't have all the modern comforts and gadgets, they also didn't have 600+ horsepower. Stock.

I wouldn't mind the ranger. Economical on gas while giving me some capacity to haul shiat when I need to.

I think the emphasis here was DEFINITELY more on "funky" instead of "cool."

The only one that looks great on that list is the Alpha, and it would probably find a way to break on the boat on the way over. But yeah, I definitely wish that the Atom was available here...

FTA- "the right size for Europe's narrow roads."

I guess none of the automaker execs live in the northeast, specifically fairfield county, ct. Once you get out of the village centers, the roads are basically glorified indian paths.

All we drove growing up were small imports. Even then, you were scraping mirrors when a car went by you going the other way.

This has always been the problem in this country. The carmakers were all headquartered in the midwest, where you drive for 10 miles straight, then take a left, and drive for another 10 miles straight.

DarkVader: As Ford says, we've got the F-150, why do we need a Ranger?

I loved my Ranger. It is a lot easier for me to get in and out of than my F150. I am probably somewhat shorter than the average truck owner, and I have to jump down from the F150. The Ranger was a lot easier. And I can reach stuff in the bed of the Ranger, where I have to stand on a milk crate to get anything out ot the back of the F150.

The Ranger was the perfect pickup truck for women.

It took entirely too long for someone to bring up the Hilux.

I'd beat an old lady to death with a roll of toilet paper to get my hands on a Hilux here in the states.

Love my Tacoma in the meantime though!

Every time I go to Home Depot (which is far too often), I'm baffled by this. A huge parking lot full of giant trucks horribly wedged into compact car sized spaces. I don't even try to park in front of the place any more. Fortunately the two business places next door to it are a revolving door of failed restaurants/ take out joints that never have cars out front. Screw trying to park close, I'd rather walk the extra couple hundred feet.
