Does Naked News still exist? Can't look up, at work...

Also, as someone who works in TV, it is already hot as hell under the lights. It must be a freaking nightmare to be under studio lights dressed up like that.

I always accepted them as they are, but suddenly a thought came into my mind. If their women need to talk to each other and say their name, how do they tell who's who? They all look the same under their attires, aside from the obvious differences in physical figures. What if they have similar body frames, or even voices? How do they deal with it?

This isn't much different than gays getting together to start a gay news network, which happens every so often. Meh, let 'em do what they want, no one's forcing them to wear it; still better than being beaten if they left the house. Egyptian attitudes have a long way to go, but they've come a long way from a few years ago, it seems.

I know that this isn't in the USA, but I can't see how dressing like this could ever be accepted here. It really has nothing to do with religion. Part of the social contract in the USA is that we can see and identify people. Seeing how people look, how they react when speaking with you, and other perhaps subtle forms of communication are virtually eliminated when you see nothing but eyes through a slit.

If someone walks into a bank wearing a ski mask or into a movie theater wearing a gas mask, we immediately go on alert because of the context of the situation and also because we can't read their face. Living in a society that covers half the population seems so awkward to say the least.

Right after the revolution I saw some woman in a burka saying "Now I am free". I have to think that there is some sort of problem with translating the word "Free" into Arabic.

These people literally do not understand the meaning of "Free".

I am not a supporter of the niqab (full veils or "ninja") style, but I feel like people don't know the facts or willfully overlook them. For instance, none of these women is entering a bank. They are working on a TV set for a private channel. If it is fine for them, who are we to judge?

Not all Egyptian women wear the niqab, in fact, only a small percentage do. While to our cultural sensibilities we immediately think that they are being oppressed, the truth is that many, if not all, are quite willing to do be veiled. This does not make Egyptian society that of "gutless savages" but merely one that has different cultural standards.

I imagine that many Egyptians look at our fashion trends and make similar criticisms over how much skin is shown in our clothes, calling our women harlots and the like. To each his own though.

Years ago I dated a woman who had married an Egyptian she met in college here in the US. He became a Dr, convinced her to move over there, and the beatings began. MIL was happy because now she had someone to hit too after being beaten all of her life. Lady had to give up custody of her children to get out of the country after a few years of torture. And Egyptians are supposed to be moderate Muslims. Evil beings.

Yep, all Egyptians are "evil beings" because of your friend's horrible experience. I have heard of a white guy, PhD student no less, who shot innocent men, women, and children in a movie theater. I bet all white people are crazy murderers.

This may sound a little odd, but here goes. When I was deployed to Saudi Arabia back after the first golf war I can remember going to the markets and seeing hundreds of women dressed head to toe like that. I don't know if it's like the old adage of "leaving something to the imagination" or what, but I saw some of the most strikingly beautiful eyes I have ever seen in my life, there was something very alluring about it. In fact I have been a fan of women with dark eyes ever since.

The point was not to prove that "white people are murderers", which is ridiculous, but also to assert that not all Egyptians are "evil beings" based on one story of a poor woman who was beaten up by her husband.

If we are to use our brains, instead of relying purely on prejudice and innuendo, we would reach the conclusion that domestic abuse is a huge problem every where, not just in Egypt. Instead of looking at statistics or evidence to back up the most awful of charges, that an entire group of people are barbarians, we take a sad incident, add to it our own prejudices of what we think happens all the time based on a few accounts, and voila, a recipe for irrational hatred is achieved.

That is pretty disgusting and no woman should have to face that. The problem is not that some women dress immodestly (so what?), it is that these boys and "men" feel that it is all right to grope and harass women, and use their victims' dress as pretext for their actions.

To be fair though, I don't think any amount of evidence justifies calling an entire society "evil beings", and the phenomenon of groping women on public transport is fairly global (e.g. Tokyo subway). That does not make it defensible in any way, all I am saying is that criticism of all Egyptian society is an overreach.

One of these things is culturally acceptable and one of them isn't. The shooter will face no repercussions and in fact will be encouraged by many, while the victims will be jailed or called criminals if they complain or fight back.

Oh wait.

In all seriousness, obviously not ALL Egyptians are evil, but their society does tolerate many things we consider morally reprehensible. There is a difference between cultural sensitivity and saying that something is not ok no matter where you are from.

Not "evil beings". I would say sexually repressed religious patriarchal society where women are considered to be inferior to men and are more prone to sexual harassment as a result.

Under American law, you aren't forced to abandon your children if you want to get out of a marriage like that.

Saudi Arabia is well known for this, but it was true in Egypt as well.
