Awful that the article did not mention Astrud Gilberto....whose smoky orgasmic voice gave TGFI its real soul.

CSB (maybe not, but here it is anyway):

Saw Astrud at a small club in NYC a decade or so ago. It was a dinner club, or at least had wait service, tables, menus, etc. Anyway, she comes out and starts singing and she's great - truly unreal soulful voice. After about 3 minutes, she stops in the middle of a lyric, literally drops the mic onto the stage floor, and strides off. About a minute later the club manager comes on stage and explains that she won't sing while anyone in the audience is making noise - no talking, no eating, no ordering, etc. Remember, this isn't Carnegie Hall - this is a small supper club/bar. Everyone kinda shrugs and looks at each other and the place goes silent.

Two minutes later, she comes out again and just starts right up - doesn't acknowledge leaving the stage or anything else. The crowd pretty much sits silently, but of course, there's the occasional quiet noise here and there. She gets through most of the same song, then again drops the mic and walks off. And that's it. She just leaves. No more Astrud. The band can't believe it, the manager can't believe it, the crowd is stunned - I think these were $40 tickets. Anyway, the club bought everyone drinks or some such thing and the band played for a few hours and they were awesome.

Really unbelievable primadonna bullshiat. Wouldn't have believed it if I wasn't there.

That is a cool story... thanks for posting it.

Hard to believe that somebody who, it seems to me, should be grateful for her extreme good fortune in life would piss on her admirers like that. It's too bad.

Actually, I've never understood why people in the crowd insist on creating as much noise as possible when someone is performing. Yeah, that was primadonna B.S. but still, if I'd paid $40 for a seat, I'd want to hear the singer.

One thing I intend to do someday is to tell someone who called me that I have to put them on hold and then start singing Girl From Ipanema.
