Yeah they release this beetle in Texas but refuse to release the harmless wasp that keeps stinkbugs in check in Asia. Meanwhile stinkbugs are destroying our crops. But I guess getting rid of weeds is more important than saving our food supply.

What's the worst that could happen? Well, if the Subtard had actually read the article, he'd know, now wouldn't he?

FTA: "It turns out this is not the first such mission for the tiny beetle, which is native to Brazil. The Army Corps of Engineers previously unleashed the beetles in California and South Carolina in 1964 to battle the invasive weeds. It's even been used in Texas before and across the South. After its success in battling the weeds in the '60s, other countries around the world followed suit."

Well for starters, a massive spike in whatever potential predators the beetle might have in that area. But I'm guessing subby's question is rhetorical.

If the grass is as prevalent as they say, the beetle pop will sky rocket causing unknown consequences.

But this isn't something new. These actions are dangerous and usually a last choice nuclear option when a out of control plant/insect/animal species is threatening an entire region.

Fortunately we already have something in the ecosystem that can keep the beetles in check.

Birds.

Come on, it's a tiny beetle. That apparently doesn't spread well. And if you want to put the effort into it you can bred large populations of sterile beetles to just eat the weeds without establishing a permanent population.

/I wanted to say Yoko Ono.

And there's this part:

"This insect can only feed on this plant or it will die. They've evolved together; they co-exist," Nachtrieb explained. "The insect depends on the plant. It cannot feed on anything else."

Since they don't eat ANYTHING else once the weed is gone they starve to death. Sounds like a perfect solution to me. I mean, except for the beetles.

The One True TheDavid: Can't you eat alligator weeds? People eat kale and collard, for fark's sake.

So true.

http://www.eattheweeds.com/alligator-weed/

One PhD expert says raw it tastes better than many salad greens and some in a salad is fine. In other words, when green it can be a garnish or a salad addition. Another says more than 100 grams dry weight ( 3.5 oz dry, which probably translates into a half a pound or more wet weight) might provide too much calcium oxalate, a bad dose. The point is don't dry it and eat 3.5 ounces of it. Some raw in your salad is fine. Also cooking can reduce the calcium oxalate in greenery.

CultureVulture: Now if we could get something for kudzu besides goats and car bumpers and windshields for love bugs.

The goats won't touch one of the types of Kudzu in Jacksonville, because it's not going to eat down to it. It's pretty damn obscene. Every once in a while somebody finds a patch with their(usually flaming) car. It chars the outside of the plant until it rains again, and that's about it.
