NoseBrain: Huh. Maybe I should give it a fourth chance and hope it's better this time.

No, that movie was not that great. People are just blinded by the director.

I barely made it through the opening monologue before getting hit with a crushing depression

Robo Beat: I read somewhere once that Scientology targets actors not necessarily because of their publiic profile, but also because compared to those in other professions actors and actresses very frequently have that unique combination of narcissism, naïvité, and deep pockets. People who believe that they can change the world with the help of Scientology and are willing to dig deep to get rid of all of their thetans like Elron said they could.

Actually, I think the exclusivity of it is what appeals to them and pride is what keeps them. Any schlub off the street can get salvation through Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, etc.... But Scientology offers (on the surface, at the initial stage) salvation through nothing more than payments of discretionary income, which most actors are swimming in. By the time you begin to have doubts, you've isolated yourself and spent a shiatload of money on it. Easier for some to just keep on going rather than having to admit their error.

consider this: Boogie Nights - great
Magnolia - great
Punch Drunk Love - good
There Will Be Blood - meh

He's going downhill with each film, so I'm not expecting much from this.

Zombie DJ: I guess I just don't care enough about someone else's religion because that just didn't look like it'd be fun to watch.

As for me, I haven't seen a movie in theaters since about 2006. I'm going to see this one as soon as it comes out.

The difference between a cult and a religion is the size of its membership.

And I truly don't give a fark about either.

Peaceboy: Hoffman is greatness, every time. Dude's won a Best Actor Oscar, shouldn't he have had higher billing than Phoenix?

High hopes for this.

It's alphabetical.

I wasn't crazy about Magnolia the first time I watched it, but after watching it a few times it really grew on me to where it's not one of my all time favorites. I do usually skip the whole opening monologue part though...

DeltaPunch: THIS

After seeing that trailer, I don't care what's about -- it just looks like a good movie.

It would be impossible to go wrong with a cast AND a director like that.

The All-Powerful Atheismo: He should've won best director AND best milkshakes

Hah! No argument here, man!

Of course. And Citizen Kane is totally not about W.R Hearst.

I didn't see PDL, but I agree that TWBB was meh - quite over-rated, in fact. It was soulless and cold, although Daniel Day Lewis's performance was excellent (if a little scenery-chewing).

Anyway, no love for PT Anderson's debut, Hard Eight?

Scientology: the only 'religion' where your salvation can actually result in a sunken-costs fallacy.

You evidently believe scientology is a religion. That generally indicates that one is a scientologist or a fool.

Now let us never speak of it again.

Need_MindBleach: jake_lex: People say this movie is career suicide for Anderson, but if Trey Parker and Matt Stone are still working after that Scientology episode of South Park, which even mentioned Xenu by name, I don't think he's in too much danger.

I'd be surprised if Scientology doesn't implode within the next 10 years. Five years, even. That little wacko leader (not Cruise, the other guy) has higher-ups defecting on him left and right. Oh, and his wife hasn't been seen since 2006. And their actual membership is estimated to be at most 40,000 people, not millions or tens of millions like they claim. Whole house of cards is going to come crashing down sometime soon.

The pretty little thing on the right?

"Magnolia" sucked balls. I liked all the rest of PTA's films, though, and really look forward to this one.

PTA is my absolute favorite director.

However, Magnolia, arguably the most "PTA" of all his films, just doesn't work for me. There's stuff to appreciate about it - beautifully acted and photographed, for example - but I feel like it doesn't do anything Boogie Nights didn't already do. And at the two-hour mark, I was certain the music sequence was the end of the film, but realizing there was another hour to slog through, I became very weary. PTA has yet to make a truly bad film, but I feel like Magnolia is the most irrelevant and unnecessary of his films, despite that it crystallizes all of the trademarks of Anderson that make him my favorite director.

That said, The Master is gonna kick some ass. Can't wait.

I think you meant

There Will Be Blood - Unfarkingbelievably great

Came here to say this. Best film of these four that are mentioned, IMHO.

Boogie Nights was good

Magnolia I found to be too fragmented ( I guess I'm just not smart enough)
Never saw Punch Drunk Love
Though I could see the obvious quality of There Will Be Blood, I found it uncomfortable and difficilt to watch (again, I assume I'm just not intellectually up to the challenge)
