fireclown: Strategeryz0r: Select fire does not define assault rifle, at least in legal terms. Going off the description used to classify assault weapons in the assault weapons bad, all that's required is a high cap mag and a bayonet lug on your AR for it to qualify.

What's high capacity? Does it apply to shotguns? I've been planning on buying a Mossburg 500, and putting every stupid rail toy that I can find on it, to include a bayonet lug, lights, and a rear view mirror.

Just get the 590A1, comes with goodies and picatinny rails on the pump for more.

Fear the Clam: pivazena: Egh... just got kicked out of a grad program after a year. He probably lost it.

Most people have the good sense to just get shiatfaced alone when that happens

Yup. Now the whole world knows that he couldn't handle mean old grad school. (And if it's after just a year at an American institution, that means he couldn't even handle the coursework.) Poor, stupid, baby.

/I don't usually feel smug about having a Ph.D., but when I do, it's because someone who can't finish his dissertation loses his shiat and lashes out like an angry toddler.

killershark: According to Anderson Cooper on his Facebook page....

New details just in: A law enforcement source tells CNN's Ed Lavandera that James Holmes purchased a ticket and walked into the Aurora, CO movie theater. Then he snuck out an exit door and left the door propped open. He geared up, gathered weapons and walked back into theater 9 through the exit door.

Police tell us the suspect was dressed all in black. He was wearing a ballistic helmet, a tactical ballistic vest, ballistic leggings, a throat protector, and a groin protector, and a gas mask , and black tactical gloves.

I actually figured that's how he was able to use the emergency exit to get in without an accomplice. But who buys all that ballistic equipment AND guns in a likely short period of time without at least setting off alarms at homeland security? I have to take my shoes off and put my 2 oz. shampoo in a clear plastic bag at the airport because I could be a threat, but no one thought to check on the guy who bought a full suit of ballistics protection?

That's what I'm wondering. Of course, that stuff could have been black market.

Horrific. Scary. Sad. Useless... what's the point of killing random innocent people? Why not take out a dictator? A tyrant? Someone responsible for ruining lives? Go crazy all you want on that shiat...but a baby? Why?

Krieghund: vernonFL: Yeah lets not make this tragedy into some political thing. Please?

Today is a day for shock and mourning.

But someday soon we'll have a day when we need to discuss again whether we want to continue to allow easy access to weapons. Some people will say we needed more people with guns, some people will say we needed fewer. Perhaps some people will say 12 people sacrificed their lives so the rest of us have the freedom to buy guns.

I'm trying to not take sides with this post, but I do think that we need to include things like this in the discussion.

I am pretty liberal but gun restrictions are a bandaid to the problem at best. What we need to have a conversation about is how we are going to identify and manage the growing number of psychopaths in this country. Take away guns from these people and they will find other ways to create carnage(fire, explosives). We have a growing number of them in this country so these things are just going to become more frequent until we deal with the root problem. Believe it or not some of the people capable of these things are raising children some more than one child how do you think those children are going to turn out. Not all psychopaths do these kinds of act but the are capable with the right trigger.

This may be a stretch, but he claimed to be the joker, and volunteered that his apartment was booby trapped.
Joker's signature weapon is a deadly neurotoxin.

If I were ATF/ bomb squad, I would be extremely careful about detonating any of the devices in the apartment.
There is a possibility that instead of simple explosives or fire bombs, he has concocted a bomb containing a neurotoxin or nerve gas of some sort.

Anyone downwind of the apartment would be exposed to the smoke or gasses created by the devices, and suffer seriously dangerous symptoms or death.

That's giving this guy a lot of credit for being a criminal mastermind, but I've always believed in the old maxim about there being a fine line between genius and madness.

Given the subject's age, onset of schizophrenia is not out of the question.

I'm willing to bet over the next week there's going to be a whole slew of evidence that points to Schizophrenia and/or something similar and nobody did anything about it.

It's the same situation as the Virginia Tech and Giffords shooter:

Male-early 20s
Smart-College
Delusions, withdrawal from common activities/friends (leaving his grad program and booby trapped house)
Shooting a bunch of random people

We really need to do something about Mental Health care in this country

The guy was a PhD candidate in neuroscience. He lived in an apartment complex that was housing other graduate students at the hospital he was doing his work at.

Maybe the guy turns out to have actual mental issues or not but if this person can fall through the cracks when surrounded by medical professionals I don't think talking about Mental Health care in this country is going to buy us anything.

Except, they really didn't do a very good job of that. Any competent gunsmith can easily modify a civi-ar to be full auto. Google search a how to guide, and you'll find(as someone else pointed out) thousands of articles outlining how to do it. Several criminals have also done this to great effect(see: North Hollywood Shootout).

Well, to 'some effect', but the illegally modified ARs are not anywhere near as reliable and robust as an actual M-16.

And there is the part about it being a federal crime to even perform the modification....

There is time, effort, expense, and you get a POS at best.

Eh, unless you're defending a trench in WWI, or fending off a banzai charge, full auto is a waste of ammo anyway...that's why they're phasing out the old M-16A1s, isn't it?

Yes it is. Skill used to be required to place 2-3 round bursts. Now automated.
Autogetem was not much of a IRL thing except for supression from an ammo bunker.
You want something like an M-60, use an M-60, or a SAW.

Dimensio: Burchill: Arguing about the exact definitions of certain gun models is definitely important, and we're all really impressed by your knowledge.

Your sarcasm is noted and is poignant. Firearm regulation should be discussed and implemented exclusively by individuals who possess no understanding of firearms whatsoever, as has been the case in California.

The gun-nerd discussion does not remedy that - it just exponentially increases the amount of boredom in the world. Who the f**k over the age of twelve gives a shiat about the makes and models of different guns? It's boring.

Why do you find it strange? I don't think he was exchanging gunfire with law enforcement and he was not holding a hostage at the time. Further, there was so much planning involved and unknown elements extracting information from him is pretty vital. Is this potentially linked to other soon-to-unfold events? Were there accomplices? Lose the asset and you could potentially diminish or eliminate any chances of stopping these occurrences or getting that information. Nothing would be gained from a logical point of view, however I don't think anyone would really care if they did put a bullet in him he deserves it.

The fact that he was sitting in his car waiting for cops, surrendered, and now isn't cooperating suggests that there is something else he's waiting to see. The traps in his apartment that they still have yet to enter, and the evacuation of CU-D buildings would back that up.

The shooter's parents? I'm going to withhold judgment on them until more comes out. It sounds like they weren't surprised by this, but we don't know what triggered this or if the parents knew about his mental instability and were trying to get him help. I actually feel sorry for them right now -- it must be so awful knowing that your own child is capable of doing something like this to other people.

The f*ck it isn't.

Civilian-marketed AR-15 model rifles lack a "select fire" capability and thus, by definition, are not "assault rifles".

Really? I thought it did but that there was only one selection due to some welds here and there, and a few missing springs. Or maybe it was an old m-16 or something I was looking at...

Anyway, gun control would not really have changed this situation, less or more, the perp was prepared and disturbed.
