Who would have thought that misdirected anger could be resolved through physical activity and by giving the pissed a little agency?

Great idea! Teach convicted terrorists how to fight. What could possibly go wrong?

If terrorists decide to prefer unarmed combat over machine guns and IEDs, I think I'm OK with that.

What the article doesn't go too deep into is that raja's "sheikh" is a Sufi leader, which most if not all Muslim extremists hate and some even go to say that they aren't Muslim. I would love to hear their reactions once they found that out.

Most of these kinds of problems come from young men who feel disenfranchised. Giving them a chance to show they are worthwhile and giving them something constructive to do is a good way to stem violence.

Maybe some one will try it with something a little more... constructive. Sports are for freaks of nature and only a tiny, tiny percentage of people will end up doing well. Plus, the effort put into them is just wasted.

Actually. Well done. You didn't retaliate, you didn't go lower than me. You didn't act like a tool, as apparently I did. You, my friend, are the bigger..person (don't know if you're man or woman).

As to the answer, the people he's dealing with don't think like ordinary people. They're not interested in learning about civilization, or learning to co-operate within a civilization. They're only interested in violence. He's re-directing that violence in a constructive way. At least IMHO.

It's constructive in the sense that it provides a framework, a basis of thought about oneself and one's life that is radically in opposition to what they have been running with up till that point. It sounds to me that unlike some MMA coaches, and very much like many traditional martial arts coaches - this guy is focusing on using the physical skills of fighting to backstop and integrate a morality. Nothing wrong with that - even if these guys never lift a hand in anger in their lives again, what they've learned may very well help them live a life that does not involve hurting others.

It's rather like kids that are bouncing off the walls and getting into all kinds of trouble here who end up in the military, or some sort of sport that requires a lot of time invested. I'm not sure I'm necessarily always in love with the moral/ethical systems that are learned that way - but it can't be denied that many end up a lot more able to function in society without lashing out at it constantly. And this means less people getting killed over what is in essence one person's/a group's angst.

I can live with that just fine mostly - more power to the gentleman - and I thank him for spending a good portion of his life trying to keep a bunch of random SOBs safer.

Violence is not the answer.

I love the comments on the article's page. A lot of it boils down to, "Let's show them that violence is wrong by killing them all!"
