Coelacanth: dittybopper: I haven't looked at the details too far yet, but so far it sounds like a single shooter.

Maybe I wasn't clear, but the all witnesses report ONE shooter, but some witnesses are reporting a SECOND tear gas canister thrower.

Thank you for following up. I always know your stuff is right.

HotWingConspiracy: I don't think you really understand the utility of policy and gun free zone designations. I'll give you a small hint though - nobody thinks they magically keep weapons away.

That's strawman idiocy pushed by the people that think guns make us safer.

To me, it says to potential criminals that no one will be armed. People tend to follow the rules, so if one of the rules is no weapons allowed, you can pretty much guarantee that most people will respect that rule. So for the criminal, that means his potential victims are likely to have a difficult time fighting back. But, private property owners/businesses are free to make rules as they please...

I don't play video games. I was on a rifle squad for years. Granted, I used some cheap ass guns, but the principle is the same.

My point is, dark theater, you have to aim at shiat and actually shoot your target. And yes, you do have to reload, which takes time.

A shotgun, you aim at nothing, hit a ton of people.

I feel like the media misquoted and am willing to bet it was a shotgun.

I dunno that in a place as packed as a movie theater you would have to aim to hit a target... I mean, pretty much, given stadium seating, you've got a wall of people in front of you... hitting the wall doesn't seem like it would be that hard of a task... given the guy dispensing OC or smoke of some sort, it seems even less likely that aiming was a big part of the plan.

The problem with vigilante justice is you can never be sure you're the only one. So if a shooter opens up a public place and several CCW cowboys respond, how do you know that the person you're shooting at is the gunman or another vigilante who's shooting at you? Without communication and cohesion, any gunfight has a tendency to become very tragic very quickly. More guns means more innocent bystanders being hit.

I'm sure this will be lost in the sea of comments, but I'm more than a little disappointed in the flippant comments made here. I'll give the first handful of folks a pass, as things were a bit murky at first, but this is a tragedy and nothing to laugh at.

Imagine if you were a parent of a teenager who lives in the area who was going to see the movie and you didn't pay very close attention to which theater. I imagine a LOT of frantic voicemails were left for kids last night, and a lot of parents sat up for hours terrified and wondering when/if their children were coming hom.

And yes, I've been farking for a very long time. So don't you drop that "welcome to fark" BS on me.

Gun free zones, like drug-free zones, are not to prevent, but to enhance punishment for people who are caught with them where they shouldn't have them (mainly schools, but other places can get designations through their local governments.)

It's like how if you get pulled over for speeding in a school zone, the ticket doubles.

Put earplugs in kids ears, you're good.

Kid sleeps a lot anyways at that age. Hard to fight overnight sitters. Wouldn't take a baby to a movie myself, unless it's the "Stars and strollers" where they tell you to bring babies/small kids. Not fair to other people if the kid starts crying.

You don't have to aim well in a crowded room unless you have specific targets you're trying to hit. From the sounds of it, they recovered 3 weapons, a handgun, assault rifle, and a third unnamed weapon which could have been a shotgun.

Now keep in mind a few things. A shotgun you're going to have what, 8 rounds, possibly 9, depending on the weapon? A handgun you could potentially have 30 rounds depending on the magazine (don't quote me, not a gun nut) and depending on the type of assault rifle, something similar? So... 60 rounds with those two weapons, 8-10 or so more with a shotgun. You could still miss a lot and injure 70+ people, what with rounds ricocheting, hitting multiple people, and so on.

Like I said, I don't know a lot about guns by a long shot, but with those 3 weapons, there wouldn't necessarily be a need to reload.

That might discourage a stick up man, but not someone up for action like this. Do you think this guy gave a shiat if someone in there had a gun?

Anyway, it sounds like the solution to gun violence is to simply take down gun free zone signs. That will certainly discourage most criminals.

A 3-month old is basically furniture. If the kid is breast-feeding and in a sling, they really wouldn't be an inconvenience to the rest of the audience. The noise might be a problem, but I saw my kid sleep through ear-splitting fireworks at that age. I guess I don't see the outrage from other than obnoxious "durr, yur a breeder" types. BurnShrike: ronaprhys: BurnShrike: ronaprhys: As opposed to the idiocy pushed by people who think that banning inanimate objects that are designed for the sole purpose of killing people make us safer?

FTFY

If you were correct, you'd have a point. The fact is that you aren't, so you don't.

Perhaps you'd like to point out where I'm incorrect then. Are guns not designed to kill people? Keep in mind we're talking about hand guns and semi/automatic weapons here, not long guns (which could be used for hunting). They're designed solely for use on people, with the intent to harm/kill.

So what part am I wrong about?

How about the part where you started typing? Firearms are designed for many different things. Are some designed to kill people? Yep - but not all are. To type what you did shows a complete lack of understanding or that you're willing to lie just to try and score political points.

Couple that with the idiotic notion that banning such things would prevent anything and you really demonstrate where you're coming from.

HotWingConspiracy: ronaprhys: HotWingConspiracy: I hear ya buddy. If the occasional massacre is the price to pay for my child-like notions of rights and freedom to be protected, I say it's a fair trade.

Your statement clearly showed that you believe a ban would prevent this. If not, why call for a ban or even insinuate that it's a good thing? The second part, however, appears to be purely conjecture on your part - and conjecture that's not supported by the facts. Note that in every area where firearm laws have been removed or loosened death and destruction have not followed. Oddly enough, the reverse does appear to happen. Firearms that have been banned in major metropolitan areas have seemingly always led to an increase in violent crimes, shootings, etc. In fact, the only way around that is to have an almost oppressive police presence or to drive up the cost of living such that it's damned near impossible for poor people to be there.

As for your last statement, strawman. Try harder.
