I didn't know "lycanthropy" was a hobby.

Looks like atheism is still fine. Whew.

But gluttony, greed and hatred are still OK if you're a real Christian.

I've never understood why D&D (or roleplaying games in general) are considered 'evil' by the religious right....

oh - and cyberpunk culture!? I didn't know Max Headroom was so dangerous.

Bradog: I didn't know "lycanthropy" was a hobby.

I'm usually too busy during the week to transform into a terrible half-beast, and I have to save tearing the throat from my victims showering in a fountain of their arterial blood for the weekends. Oh sure, back in my youth I had the luxury of rampaging across the moors five even six nights a week, but these days I have responsibilities.

"Postmodernism" is a stumper. How would you eliminate that from your life? Kill yourself? Avoid Beckett plays?

2012-07-19 12:53:33 PM
Meditation is a gateway to demonic possession. Really. You really believe this.

That's just too goddamn stupid for words.

2012-07-19 12:53:35 PM
Wait, D&D will lead to schizophrenia and late stage syphilis?

I've read lists like that before. Some Christian groups remake them infrequently, adding things they disapprove of. The one I read when I was a kid included the Beatles specifically, and rock 'n' roll in general.

Most Christians prefer not to think. Don't let the stupid bother you.

2012-07-19 02:36:03 PM
Interesting how they didn't include numerology, despite that fact that 84% of fundies are numerologists (e.g., 666, 3:16; Florida dude's calculations on the Apocalypse, etc.)

And of course, the footnotes barely mention any of this. If you're gonna include references, make sure they're relevant.

"Halloween Fornication"? That just isn't fair.

No, those are Eastern religions, #1 on the list. Also they are meditation. And everything boils down to Satanism anyways.

Okay, I've tried about ten of those. And I listen to rock music all the time. But I already knew I was going to hell.

I think the reasoning is that it treats magic as something to be used, not condemned.

Still, until I saw things like Harry Potter on that list I thought this thing was thirty years old. This looks like the BS that was floating about more back in the early 80s. Only the most truly serious hardcore fundamentalists are taking this kind of thing seriously. While more folks were more agreeable to this years ago when I was a kid, it just seems like there's darned few folks who are this kooky, even among the more conservative groups.

It looks more like some bunch of wingnuts that has doubled down on it as time went by instead of lightening up.

If you really want to know, vegitarianism on some sort of moral ground (they'd be suspicious, but they would probably be OK with health grounds) contradicts Genesis where God gives man dominion over the animals and plants. How they square Marihuana (sic) prohibition with this is beyond me.

Disagree with "yoga," and others, but they left out "alcoholism." Drunkards that have passed on love to influence people who are inclined to imbibe too much. They then enjoy, vicariously, being drunk through them. Same probably applies to all situations where a spirit misses its addiction.

Solution? Picture yourself and your home filled with and surrounded by white light, and pray for God/Jesus to assist you and protect you.

/Works at hospitals and cemetaries, too. You wouldn't want to take home any "hitchhikers." (-;

TypoFlyspray: If you really want to know, vegitarianism on some sort of moral ground (they'd be suspicious, but they would probably be OK with health grounds) contradicts Genesis where God gives man dominion over the animals and plants. How they square Marihuana (sic) prohibition with this is beyond me.

/ Carnivore

Interesting. Yeah, I've considered going veg. on the grounds that I'm just not that, I don't know, excited about eating meat, generally. I just don't need that much. (Beef. It's overrated.) But I still do like lamb, chicken and fish. Everything else needs to be spiced and/or cured. (Mmm, bacon.) So... cutting down on meat will have to do.

But seriously, even the "moral ground" explanation does not compute. Man must prove his dominion over animals by exercising by eating hamburger? Your god wants steak? Huh. That does sound rather sacrificial.

Then again, sacrifice does show up in the Old Testament...

Eh. Makes about as much sense as anything else on that list...

I didn't read any comments after this one (except for the two people who are highlighted for me.

D&D is blacklisted by some people for the same reason that Harry Potter isn't allowed in some schools. In essence, there isn't a real reason; some dried up twat who happens to have a small amount of power gets his or her jollies by taking away something other people enjoy, in the vein hope that they can make the rest of us as miserable as they are.

Take marijuana. It's enjoyable, has no long term adverse effects, causes a hell of a lot less death than alcohol, doesn't render the user violent, make them vomit, leave them hungover, or make them call up any of their exes. If these miserable pricks would just smoke the freaking marijuana and have a good time instead of biatching about other people having a good time without them, the world would be a much better place.

But vegetarianism? How did that get there? It's evil not to kill animals for meat? Does this brand of Christianity demand blood sacrifice? Or what?

/Omnivore

Because God put the animals here for us to kill and eat! Vegetarianism is a gateway to recognizing that animals have souls, which is eastern religion territory!

I've had Christians and Muslims alike give me the first sentence on a regular basis.

2012-07-19 03:25:03 PM
So they're quoting Deuteronomy chapter 18, eh? Alrighty then.

"I am the first, I have no father; I am the last, I have no brother. Beside Me there is no God; I have no son."--Exod. Rabba 29
"But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death."-- Deut. 18:20

Jesus is a liar, God has no son. Deuteronomy says to put to death prophets who aren't speaking the words of God. Therefore, Jesus worship, by this same Deuteronomy chapter and by the logic presented in the article, should be considered demonic possession. Problem Christians?

They usually feature magic that is clearly a made-up fantasy and not reality and you get used to dealing with it.
Kids might look at other stories featuring magic and automatically put them in the same "it's a made-up fantasy" box.

And a comparatively lame fantasy to boot. I mean, come on: you're a godling, it takes you three days to respawn and you apparently don't have any decent offensive spells?
Heck, under the older edition ruleset you could get stuff like "Flesh to Stone" and nuke-like giant area-of-effect spells like"Slay Firstborns", "Hailstorm", "Cloud of Locusts" and so on.
Granted, it always seemed a tad unbalanced to me, but they went overboard reworking their rules and the newer edition turned out to be completely neutered and lame by comparison

.

That is probably the only thing on the list other than Scientology which is actually harmful. I know lots of people who have smoked for years without any problems whatsoever, I also know people who have experienced psychotic episodes. The Royal College of Psychiatrists have a few points to make about schizophrenia too.

Also - no steampunk on the list? Cyberpunk but not steampunk? I'm scoring 16 on the list, I blame the vegetarianism.

I'm bewildered as to how vegetarianism could make it onto such a list. Weren't Adam and Eve the original vegetarians before they brought sin into the world?

Beelzebub surely has an autographed first edition of Paul Auster's City of Glass.

Any literature which has a self-contradictory plot, which blurs the borders between reality and fiction, and in which the author himself is one of the main characters, is considered direct competition with the Bible.

The Voice of Doom: Weaver95
I've never understood why D&D (or roleplaying games in general) are considered 'evil' by the religious right....

Granted, it always seemed a tad unbalanced to me, but they went overboard reworking their rules and the newer edition turned out to be completely neutered and lame by comparison

.
/ teens might wonder what class and level you have to be to get a spell for turning water into booze...

Bribing up broken AoE spells and not mentioning Locate City? Scrub.

Well, if they're going with the biblical definition of necromancy they mean talking to the dead and asking then about the future. That's where the "Catholics are necromancers" thing comes from, that and banging ones head on the wall repeatedly.

Hold up, Catholics can talk to the dead and ask about the future? Why didn't I learn this? :( Guess I should go to mass more often.

Well, the saints died, they pray to saints or something. The people espousing the opinion were never really able to properly explain it. Though that might've been because I was high as fark.

Canton: But vegetarianism? How did that get there? It's evil not to kill animals for meat? Does this brand of Christianity demand blood sacrifice? Or what?

Actually, vegetarianism has been a controversial issue in Christianity since the beginning. Some people have argued that God commanded people to kill animals and eat meat (not just that we -can- but that we -should-). In the early Chuch (meaning after the death of Jesus, while Paul was alive and writing all his letters), vegetarianism was a controversial issue that split the church. Paul even wrote about it in the book of Romans.

Interestingly, the Wikipedia article on Christian vegetarianism has been trolled hard, so read it with more than the usual salt.

downstairs: spill_thrill: And has "cyberpunk culture" ever actually been a real thing anywhere?

Yeah, I kinda remember it in the 90's. It wasn't that big of a movement... but it was certainly separate from things like goth, geek culture, etc.

I remember people in college who specifically labeled themselves "cyberpunks". Kinda lame, but it existed.

Wow. Thanks for the information! I had no idea. I may just use the Wikipedia article as a portal. Plenty of external links there.

This seems pertinent, though:

6 Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God.

But I am not Christian. This stuff is just interesting, even when it's freaking scary.

I've never understood why D&D (or roleplaying games in general) are considered 'evil' by the religious right....

Granted, it always seemed a tad unbalanced to me, but they went overboard reworking their rules and the newer edition turned out to be completely neutered and lame by comparison

.

cloud_van_dame: Nice how postmodernism follows lycanthropy on this list.

Most of these I get, but postmodernism? Satan like ugly buildings?

"We are as fascinated by Ramses as Renaissance Christians were by the American Indians, those (human?) beings who had never known the word of Christ. Thus, at the beginning of colonization, there was a moment of stupor and bewilderment before the very possibility of escaping the universal law of the Gospel. There were two possibilities: either admit that this Law was not universal, or exterminate the Indians to efface the evidence."- Jean Baudrillard

That Postmodernist is saying Christianity caused the genocide of the Indians!!! That is evil and Satanic, even if there's probably a lot of truth to the accusation.

Weaver95: I've never understood why D&D (or roleplaying games in general) are considered 'evil' by the religious right....

Any sort of roleplaying "encourages the practice of witchcraft" because pretending to cast spells is just a stepping stone to selling your soul to the devil and doing it for real. Or so I was told by the godawful (pun not intended) book from her church that my mom forced me to read, back in high school when she caught me with D&D books. Somehow I don't think a o_O face followed by "The fark was the guy that wrote THIS crap smoking?" was the response she was looking for.

Then there's my former cow-orker who pulled his 7th-grade daughter out of school and took on a second job to put her through wackjob fundie Baptist school because the public school English teacher wanted her to read Harry Potter.

tinfoil-hat maggie: Well if threesomes count for trilateralism and Playing Vampires the Masquerade counts as vampirism then I got 30

FYI, the definition of trilateralism:

1. The practice of engaging in three-party relations, agreements, or negotiations.
2. The political and economic policy of encouraging friendly relations among three nations or regions, especially the United States, Western Europe, and Japan, or North America, Europe, and the Pacific Rim.

I just signed a contract for my new car that involved myself, the car dealer, and the loan company. So I get this one without the threesome snark.

And I get another point if dressing up as a vampire for halloween counts, which puts me at 31 or 33.

I think we need a response from the judges.

FYI, the definition of trilateralism:

1. The practice of engaging in three-party relations, agreements, or negotiations.
2. The political and economic policy of encouraging friendly relations among three nations or regions, especially the United States, Western Europe, and Japan, or North America, Europe, and the Pacific Rim..

Yes, but by "trilateralism" the author probably means the Trilateral Commission, which in turn suggests a one-world government to the sort of paranoid person who would make such a flyer.

And Christian fundamentalists tend to believe a one-world government is a sign of the Anti-Christ. Literally.

Mine too. The level of cluelessness about the subject is mind-boggling, but this one Link is so farked up that it's not even listed on Chick's site anymore. A guy rapes his daughter because he watches a titty-flick and his neighbor finds out and wants in on it. Then the kid gets herpes from the neighbor and a doctor finds out. Instead of turning the guy in to the cops, he teaches him about Jeebus and then all is forgiven. The kid is about 5 years old btw. fark Jack Chick.
