(BBC)   It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. With the economy in the loo, murders down and pickpocketing considerably up, England's becoming more Dickensian every day   (bbc.co.uk) divider line 39

In this life one thing counts: in the bank, large amounts. I'm afraid these don't grow on trees. You've got to pick a pocket or two, boys. You've got to pick a pocket or two.

Why should we all break our backs. Better pick a pocket or two.

Shut up and drink your gin!

That's a farking lie, there are murders, stabbings, and violent crime like I have never seen in the last 30 years! The law in this country needs to clean the shiat off the streets! Carry a knife? At the moment if you get caught they give you a slap on the wrist. You may have been on your way to a premeditated murder for all the rozzers know. My law - Caught with a knife? 20 years pounding rocks into dust, no tv, no Playstation and certainly no conjugal visits! Human rights, ,why son you lost those when you stabbed that man!

I'd rather go back to Dickens than late Communist Russia like we are doing here in the USA.

Yeah, we have dish soap for $1, do you have your papers (customer loyalty card)?

No? Ohhh, too bad...here are the 25 other kinds of dish soap we have...they are $12.
Yes? Ohhh, too bad. We only had 6 of those, and I just sold the last one of those to the man (my cousin) who just left. We have this other dish soap here for $12. Or you can try again next month.

Well, there is ONE facet of British life that has remained since the time of Dickens:

Next will come debtor's prisons, or workhouses as they were called.

Hmmm... The modern white-collar debtor doesn't need a prison; we voluntarily return each day to our little cubicles and submit to the will of our corporate masters. This allows us to buy shiny new gadgets and enjoy some of the finer things available in this world to those who comply and participate.

Petty crime is literally a protected endeavor in England. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. If someone mugs you, you best just give up your goods. If you fight back, you'll get into trouble.

Then could it be that you're more a slave to your shiny new gadgets than your "corporate masters"? ...unless this is the corporation to which you're referring:

The number of homicides rose from around 300 a year in the 1960s to about 1,000 a decade ago

So banning guns more than tripled the homicide rate. I'm sure those extra 700 dead people per year didn't mind dieing for the sake of anti-gun prejudice.

Even as a pro gun loving guy who owns twenty firearms, I think that is a bit of a stretch. Way to be dickish. I award you a medal for outstanding farkishness.

No one ever mentions the best of times when they use the word "Dickensian". He distinctly mentioned the best of times. Right up in the front. But no, you say "Dickensian" and everyone gets Droody about it.

Time can loop

Seriously, we have to wait for the people who were under thirty in 1970, to be six feet under before any of this changes Unfortunately that's about 20-25 years out. Offhand thought is that one societal failure was that post war boom generation (The people in power now) were never properly prepared for their own mortality. Now they are old they are freaking out.

"They" are not in power, just in office.
Way big difference.

NOTHING makes you safer.
But having and training on gunz is your personal responsibility, like the Constitution says.

Everybody wants somebody, some thing, some phoney god to be responsible.
Sorry, your job.

So we have a very small percentage of our population that are violent criminals. 60% of Brittons are petty criminals.

Link

I'll take my chances with the former rather than the near certainty you'll be victimized in the UK.

Murder rates have always been high in the US (and vary wildly by state).

Murder rates have always been low in Britain, even before gun control.

Try to pick the year where the first gun control act was introduced.

(hint: it's toward the right of the chart)

But the property crime rate is 1 per 100K in the UK in 2010, compared to 2.9 per 100K in the US. Does that mean 100% of Americans are petty criminals?

No, it means that 60% of Brittons are petty thieves and cheats. Just like the article said.

The pickpocketing and petty theft isn't by Brits - its by Eastern Europeans, mostly Romanians.

And managing to commit 1/3 the number of petty crimes Americans are, so they're lazy to boot. How awful it must be there.
