Hey "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night" doesn't include "internet", "18th century technology" or "politics" does it?

The saying dates from the 5th century BC and failure to anticipate 21st century retirement plans is excusable.

On the other hand, Herodotus may have had experience with 18th century messaging technology.

Yep. Pretty much.

The post office is authorized explicitly in the Constitution because the founders considered it essential that Americans have a way to transmit information via newspapers and other printed materials. One of the cornerstones of freedom of the press is the freedom to distributed the printed materials. It's no surprise the fascists would want to snuff out this service.

Quantum Apostrophe: Hey subby, how am I supposed to get my goodies from eBay and Amazon into the wilderness known as Canada? Both our postal services are great IMO.

For shipping to Canada, USPS beats the shiat out of UPS every time. Every time I order something from UPS it's, "ohhhh, your package is at the border. ohhh, it's still at the border. ohhhh, we tried to deliver but you weren't in - you say you were? Well, whoops. Just drive over to our depot 45 minutes away and pick it up before 4:00 p.m. ohhh, yeah, there's a $45 duty and clearing fee for your convenience."

2012-07-19 09:24:28 AM
Mail sucks. The business would have failed no matter what. The only things worth delivery are packages, and the occasional letter and card which UPS can do and is far better at it. To be honest the only thing I send by mail anymore is a loan payment , and thats because the service isn't online. WHICH IS GAWD AWFUL. Realistically, can the mail service even succeed without the set up for failure?

In my neighborhood there are these awesome people called trashmen who take the garbage away. And here are crappy people called postmen who without fail deliver garbage every day.

Since they refuse to give me the option to turn off the junk mail the post office can go to hell.

Of course private industry wants to kill the most successful government program in US history. Even my grandparents who are Tea Party nuts about lost their sh*t when it occurred to them that the USPS might go under.

thecpt: the occasional letter and card which UPS can do and is far better at it.

I am going to skip over the fact that UPS has currently lost my Nexus 7 and instead ask you what planet you live on that UPS can handle LETTERS in an economic fashion. They charge at least 10x the price as the USPS.

Also, FYI - UPS and FedEx don't service Alaska (and many other rural areas). They just hand them off to the USPS. Must be nice to have someone to handle all of your non-urban/suburban tasks.

It's a shame. I much prefer the USPS because it is simply far cheaper and they get the package to the door. Not a depot that's only open between 12:02-3:05 pm.

2012-07-19 09:31:44 AM
Maybe this is a good thing, maybe congress will legalize interstate beer/wine/liquor mailing.

Force people to show ID when the pick up the package at the store.

Since it's booze and the post office is a branch of the government it could retain it's monopoly on it.

That would have put them over the "if it fits it ships" limit. Used the USPS labled boxes and all.

More deserving than sitting in an office using an electronic device to enter bits of data meant to further expand the reach of said electronic device's capabilities, the net result being a whole lotta nothing when the power goes down...

The lack of House action has been harshly criticized by senators and mailing industry representatives. "The longer the House delays consideration of the bill, the longer the uncertainty about the Postal Service's financial future remains," said Senator Scott Brown, Republican of Massachusetts, one of the co-sponsors of the Senate postal bill. "This is irresponsible and unfair."

The delay comes as the House has also stopped work on its version of the farm bill, another piece of legislation that the Senate has passed but that House leaders have shown no interest in bringing to a vote. The current farm bill expires on Sept. 30.

The Tea Party is the worst movement to grab power in a very, very long time.

Sucks that they lost the package. At least with UPS, lost package claims are pretty easy to get taken care of. With the post office, not so much.

I'm still confused how last year I mailed a small package from Phoenix to Tucson (2 hour drive) and the postal service decided to get it there by way of LA. Oh, and letting it sit in an LA warehouse/center for two days... Hard to believe there isn't a regular truck between phoenix and tucson.

Gee... maybe if they understood customer service in some small way. There's a reason the term "going postal" started with them... I consider it every time I have to walk into a 30 person line with one person on duty working slower than I'd be able to function while 3 others shoot the shiat in the corner avoiding eye-contact with the line... Or when I see someone come in 20 minutes before the posted Passport Application Time and see them be told their too late because it takes too long to complete before closing.

They COULD earn that pension... but they don' t; instead, they treat us like shiat and I avoid the place like the plague. I WANT to support them... but entering the place risks my having an aneurysm from ire.

\would pay twice as much if they actually fixed this.

Yes, because UPS's dumping of packages off to the USPS to have USPS deliver for them totally makes UPS better at it than the USPS...

Yea, fark UPS they charged me $20 brokerage fees on a $25 item. When I refused the package they cut off all delivery to the address until the fee was paid.

I remember during the last election somebody in a town-hall expressed worry that UPS and other private carriers might be 'socialized'. Candidate Obama smiled and pointed out that UPS and other private carriers were doing fine, it was USPS that was having problems. I'm still shocked that nobody has used that sound-byte against him.
