Fano:
Instead of having a bunch more episodes where Marge and Homer nearly divorce, I would love to see episodes dedicated to each of them. Been holding out for a Dr. Nick, Sea Captain, or even Bumblebee Man episode.

Isn't Dr. Nick dead? I could've sworn that was one of the few plot points from the movie that carried back to the show (when the dome explodes and a 2 ton shard lands right on him "Good bye, everybody!") Granted I haven't seen very many of the newer episodes, but I thought I heard his death is part of the show's continuity now.

gadian: NeoCortex42: What did it for me was her treatment of Data. When I was a kid watching TNG during its initial run, Data was by far my favorite character. The way she talked down to him and treated him like equipment was infuriating.

That was me too. She was just so MEAN. To everyone, really.

She was alright back in the day. I guess everybody gets a bit cranky when they've been in Starfleet for a century or so.

List fails without Ben Linus.

Michael Emerson was originally contracted to appear in just three episodes of Lost, but the producers were so impressed by his acting that they kept him and made him a pivotal part of the series.

THIS!!!!!!

Emerson was seriously phenominal at making a despicable character not only...likeable...but he also had some of the best line delivery's in history.

Giving Locke's eulogy: "John Locke was a very good man. I'm sorry I murdered him."

As they are on the plane to 'return' to the island
Jack: How can you read?
Linus: My mother taught me.

I could go on...but Yeah...Emerson took what was basically throwaway character and turned him into a key player.

Only intended to be a one-shot character and was killed at the end of the episode.

Then the producers thought, "Hey, Jeffrey Combs is awesome, we gotta bring that guy back."

Commander Shran is my 2nd favorite character in all of Trek.

I can't believe they actually named the character Porkins. I didn't realize that was actually his name until I watched the Family Guy parody

RexTalionis: Then the producers thought, "Hey, Jeffrey Combs is awesome, we gotta bring that guy back."

"...In fact, let's bring him back as six or seven entirely different characters, sometimes in the same episode."

NTTAWWT. Weyoun had all the best lines. Just like the early* first-season Doctor on Voyager, the Vorta character played by Iggy Pop, and a few other one-offs, his character frequently got to say the things that the wiseass jerks in the audience were saying at the screen. If the show had been made a few years later, he would have gotten to look directly at the camera like Jim from The Office.

* Early first season, when he was a grouchy asshole because that's exactly how a sane person would act under the circumstances. ("I seem to be on the Voyage of the Damned.") Never mind the lobotomized dipwad the character became for the remaining 95% of the show.

Here are a few from the revived era of Doctor Who:

media.tumblr.com
Hired just as a throwaway character for "Voyage of the Damned"; retconned as Donna's grandfather when the actor playing her dad died. Amazing in "Turn Left", "Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End" and the first half of "The End of Time".

The Rt. Hon. Harriet Jones. Annoying at the start, slapped down by the Doctor, proved to have been right all along, and went out in a blaze of awesome.

I wonder if they came up with the name and then cast a fat guy, or if Porkins was just some dude hanging around the set, and they said, "it would be funny if we put fatass Porkins over here into a cockpit."

What exactly makes a character minor?

On Hogan's Heros there was one guy who constantly showed up as a German driver or one of the guards. He constantly changed roles but never said a word. And I doubt anyone noticed on the original run because the TV's weren't that clear. Now that was a minor character.

/Scruffy only exists to deliver a zinger.

Reminds me of the cashier from Seinfeld:

She was simply always there. And then suddenly became the focus of a B-plot with George.

In one of the Star Wars books, Wedge informs his squadron mates to "perform the Porkins Maneuver" ...

I immediately thought "does that involve exploding for no apparent reason whatsoever?"

Huh?

FTA: George Lucas didn't anticipate how popular this bounty hunter character with next to no lines would be, otherwise we doubt he would have been killed in Return of the Jedi.

Didn't Lucas work it into Star Wars canon that Boba Fett blasted his way out of the Sarlaac and survived?

The Stealth Hippopotamus: LoneWolf343: He started out as a background character in TNG. He ascended because of popularity.

One of the best lines on DS9: "Oh I love it here on DS9, they need me here. Back on the Enterprise I was so bored I just stood about the transporter room waiting for something to do."

Or something like that.

I guess I missed the point of the article.

My favorite story I heard about O'Brien was when he got a script for read-through he got upset, because he didn't see his name anywhere. One of the other actors had to point out that they'd finally given him a first name - all the lines for "Miles" were him.
