Car_Ramrod: A minor character in all three of the original Star Wars movies, Wedge has been featured as a major player in the expanded universe of the series, including most notably the Rouge Squadron books and video games

I did NOT know that about Wedge...

Also, technically, Boba Fett didn't die in RotJ. What kind of nerds are these?

Some of the most pure fun adventure books in the Star Wars EU.

SlagginOff: Yeah, I'd say the comprehensive list of Simpson's minor characters should be #1 here. All of them from single-episode characters like Frank Grimes to Springfield mainstays like Moe are pure genius.

Even on that list, there has to be a Number One. My vote:

Disco Stu. Put in for one throw-away joke at a garage sale, becomes long-lasting iconic background character.

Eh, I can't stand that guy.

Yeah, that's an odd choice for the best minor character in a series that has these guys...

Those aren't minor characters on the series by a long shot. They're in most episodes and are usually a pretty big part of the plot.

It's splitting hairs. Right now Mike and Saul are more integral to the main plotline than they've ever been in the history of their characters, but Jonathan Banks and Bob Odenkirk are still getting no better than 7th and 8th billing. And this is in the vaccum of after all the Tucos and Gus and other central villians have been killed off. When you do a per average of their characters since they've been introduced into the series, they're probably averaging about one scene per episode. That's pretty fringe. MIke might be featured one episode (as he was last week) and then completely disappear off the face of the earth (as he was at the end of last year). Central characters on shows typically don't just disappear during the most critical final episodes of the season.

Nine of the fifteen descriptions began with the word "originally"... made me feel like I was stuck in a time loop.

Wedge Antilles? Only if you read the books, and even then.. Fark Wedge.

The guy who always backs out when stuff gets real? Pffft.

Originally hired as a day player for one episode in the first season, Jamie Farr's "Cpl. Maxwell Q. Klinger" became one of the most popular characters on M*A*S*H.

In his defense, he was the only one (with a name) who fought and survived both Death Stars. None of the major characters can make that claim.

Well, the squadron started out somewhat hush-hush IIRC.
So initially the squadron members used to be pretty red in the face when they were asked about it.
And after Han cracked a joke about that fact in the mess hall, they were stuck with that unfortunate name.

No mention of our Mrs. Reynolds?

Yeah, Rogue Squadron is much cooler than Rouge Squadron. Rouge Squadron sounds like a bunch of flying hookers or something..

List succeeds (well, slightly) with Aaron Pierce from 24. Very well done character. Every other minor character was generally waaaaay over the top. Most likely because they were gonna be killed shortly anyway.

The Stealth Hippopotamus: 9. Miles O'Brien?! Minor??

The guy was the star of at least 9 episodes I can think of off the top of my head.

He was minor at first in his TNG days. It wasn't really until DS9 that he came into his own.

/glad to see he got some love in this list

Glad to see some Psych love, though Buzz is about as minor of a character as you can get(has he even been in any recent episodes?). The more popular minor character would be Pierre Despereaux/Cary Elwes, imho, but he's in far less episodes

I think it was a long time before he even got a name on TNG.

(Alec Baldwin from Glengarry Glenross)

So much this. The movie tracks the play almost to the letter, but his character was written in as a 5-ish minute bit. His character totally did not match up with the tone of the entire move... but his quick burst did help set the progress of the plot as it goes slowly nowhere but down.

/my favorite movie of all time

gadian: Carson Beckett. Why they thought nobody would like him boggles the mind. The doctors are always immediately accepted as loved members of an ensemble cast. I blame Dr. McCoy for that.

Except Pulaski. What a biatch.

I don't know if that would actually count. True, the Fonz was initially a minor character, but quickly became the star of the show.

He started out as a background character in TNG. He ascended because of popularity.

Mickey Kostmayer from The Equalizer. Keith Szarabajka was outstanding in that role. Made a minor character seem like a lead.

List fails without Ben Linus.

Michael Emerson was originally contracted to appear in just three episodes of Lost, but the producers were so impressed by his acting that they kept him and made him a pivotal part of the series.

What did it for me was her treatment of Data. When I was a kid watching TNG during its initial run, Data was by far my favorite character. The way she talked down to him and treated him like equipment was infuriating.

Originally a minor recurring Agent, Clinton Jones has been one of the more stable characters on USA's White Collar, gradually getting more character development and screen time. Sharif Atkins was added to the main cast for season four.

Instead of having a bunch more episodes where Marge and Homer nearly divorce, I would love to see episodes dedicated to each of them. Been holding out for a Dr. Nick, Sea Captain, or even Bumblebee Man episode.

One of the best lines on DS9: "Oh I love it here on DS9, they need me here. Back on the Enterprise I was so bored I just stood about the transporter room waiting for something to do."

Or something like that.

I guess I missed the point of the article.

But he was far from the best.
