Lol :)

If you read the article that was buried a month after the story broke. The face eating guy wasn't on bath salts he just had plain old marijuana in his system from what the toxicology report said. Sooooooo!

Citation? I hadn't heard/read that.

Except you then had to read that he probably DIDhave bath salts in his system but the toxicology report didn't pick it up. Experts said there's no way someone just on marijuana would act like that and take gunshots to various parts of his body and not even stop eating his victim while being shot.

The designer drugs used in bath salts and incense have hundreds of formulations, and are very difficult to test for... they are moving targets, which was part of the strategy when they developed this crap almost 10 years ago. The key effect that seems common among all these formulations is that they tend to raise the heart rate to around 185 (leading to an overwhelming sensation of heat, which often leads to the user removing clothes) and an unusually pervasive psychosis (drugs used to treat 'normal' psychotic episodes seem to be ineffective against bath salts/incense-induced psychosis, and episodes can last days)

By having all the formulations, they would shift to a new formula once an old formula got put on Schedule A as a narcotic. Being difficult and expensive to test for made enforcement a nightmare for states.

Even a high profile case like a face-eating, hopped-up pseudo zombie would still likely miss traces of these "new formulations" of designer drugs that he probably ingested from bath salts.

...but by all means, sleeper2995, continue snorting bath salts. I'm sure it will end well for you.

the only problem causing one is MDPV. the others are fine.
but if we mix MDPV with the others, we can make them ALL illegal. just like what happened with methylone will happen to all the other good chems. watch out govt. here comes trash

ThrobblefootSpectre: Notice I was responding to the all out libertarian stance of anything you put in your body is your business period. If that's it, that's it.

You are going down the path of, "we still need to heavily regulate things even if they are legal and hold the distributors responsible", and I completely agree with you.

Yeah, I'm not sure anyone really wants a completely anarchic system of anything goes and you're always on your own... Some may claim to want that, but I think they'd be horrified if they actually got it...

Just regulate all drugs like we do with alcohol and tobacco, and we'd be fine... Pick a minimum age, slap some warnings on the package, slap some vice taxes on it, and sell the shiat! (On a side-note: why the hell is tobacco ok at age 18, but alcohol isn't until age 21?? Who came up with that nonsense? Surely, those are backwards, right? I mean, I'd prefer to see them both ok at age 18, when you're legally a farking adult... But, if we're going to delay one until you hit 21, surely it should be the tobacco, shouldn't it?)

not if you want to generate sales. tobacco is very important to the economy. and of course healthcare industry.

Yeah, maybe alcohol is not a bad template for pot. With alcohol you can brew limited quantities for personal consumption at home tax free. I think trying to have only government approved and taxed distributors for pot will be an enforcement joke because it is so easy to grow. But if your homebrew has contaminants and harms someone, yeah you can bet the law will (and should) have something to say about that.

they don't make it anymore
MDPV is illegal. and they are just using up their vast stores of it in various bath salts.
and of course said bath salts are illegal

Ed Grubermann: zez: Why are they always taking off their clothes? Do you feel hot or something?

Yes, these drugs increase your body temperature.

They usually raise your heart rate to "normal person at full sprint" levels while at rest.
That could make you want to strip faster than simple feverishness.

Found this interesting (from Wikipedia):
"Bath salts are active at doses of between 3 mg and 5 mg, with the average dose being between 5 mg and 20 mg.The risk of overdose is high, however, since the packets often contain 500 mg and suggest users use 50 mg."

Shiat, 3-5 mg dose is VERY hard to measure out at home. I believe that's about 1/3 the dose you take of DMT. Now, I've never taken DMT, but I did watch a guy accidentally put himself into another dimension when he tried to measure out a 15mg dose by eyeballing it. It was an impressive lesson on why you don't fark with chemicals that are psychoactive at very low dosage.

LoneWolf343: mxwjs: i'm gonna call, "anti bath salts propaganda"... i would like to see the "legalize all drugs" crew in here saying we don't need the gov't telling us what we can ingest.

If they didn't, we wouldn't have to make dangerous yet legal alternatives.

If you really "have to" ingest things you know are dangerous, then you really do have an addiction problem.

2012-07-19 10:39:00 AM

LordJiro: Seriously, why in the sweet flipping fark would you take this shiat? Does it do ANYTHING besides make you go completely batshiat crazy?

mxwjs: i'm gonna call, "anti bath salts propaganda"... i would like to see the "legalize all drugs" crew in here saying we don't need the gov't telling us what we can ingest.

As I understand it, the thing about bath salts is that they had to constantly slightly alter the chemical to keep it legal. Altering the chemistry of drugs can really fark you up; see also the various forms of 'synthetic marijuana'. If the original things were legalized, people wouldn't have to do that, and would be able to use the safer, more stable alternatives.

Personally? As long as it doesn't affect me, put whatever the fark you want into your body.

That's the entire justification for all laws that restrict what you can put in your body.

And people who "have to" ingest stuff that makes them crazy need help not having to.

Or maybe there is no test that could detect what else was in his system. That's part of the allure of "bath salts," which are of no specific formulation.

ThrobblefootSpectre: I think trying to have only government approved and taxed distributors for pot will be an enforcement joke because it is so easy to grow.

True... But, at the same time, I think you'd find that most people would just go to the store and buy the packaged stuff, anyway... Just like with homebrewing, growing your own would be a niche activity only done by a relative few... Most people are lazy... Any tax losses from homegrown weed would be negligible and not worth even caring about... Just care about taxing all sales, and ignore the rest... (And, yes, that includes selling some of your homegrown to friends, too... You want to be a dealer, you've got to pay taxes... You want to give it away, then fine, no taxes... And, yes, I'm sure you'd see a few big hippy communes spring up with giant fields of pot growing and shared freely among everyone there... I'm fine with that... Their tax revenue won't be missed...)

It's true that only marijuana was detected in him. But that doesn't mean nothing else was in him. It just means no test was available that could detect it.
