Some friends of friends had a Make-A-Wish trip to Disney with their daughter about a year and a half ago -- in her case, her illness was terminal, but from what they said it was clear that these trips were for any kid who'd been through a grueling, dangerous, long-term illness -- they're as much for the whole family as for the kid, it's about giving them a chance to relax and just enjoy themselves together for a week without having to juggle all the six thousand different things that have to be juggled when you're trying to run a household and hold down a job while caring for a seriously ill child. Even if this family does fund their own trip to Disney, they likely won't get the perks that Make-A-Wish families do, and that sucks. Whatever issues the dad has with the mother and grandmother, he's punishing his daughter for them. How on earth he thinks this is good long-term approach, I can't imagine, unless he just doesn't give a rat's ass about his kid. I wonder if the original refusal was a ploy to get them to include him in the trip?

False, you farking trolltard submitter.
If the ex-wife and he BOTH said no to their offer, you wouldn't have a problem with it, would you?? And this wouldn't be a story.
And if the wife said no, and he said yes, it again wouldn't be a story.
There is only outrage because he's a man (who hasn't been allowed to see his own daughter, by the way).

Lorelle: AirForceVet: My ex wasn't always nice to me about my visitation. But I never would retaliate, especially if it impacted my son. Bad karma.

Given that this story will be on the internet for a looong time, someday this girl will learn that her father tried to keep her from going to Disney World just to get back at her mother, and will hate him for it mother got her excited about going to Disney World, to set up her father as the bad guy, and ran to the media to demonize him, so that his daughter would hate him, and she will hate her for it.

FTFY.

Comprise -let the father and mother take the child. Using the kids as pawns, high stakes. He does make himself look bad in a special way, the kind where you just do not care who you hurt. Can not dress this up. Its spite. It looks like the child will have enough for the trip. Hopefully the both parents can see that this is not good for the kid.

It is not spite.
You have no evidence of that at all.
By your logic, every parent should give their child everything they want all the time, take them to Disney World every year, or heck, maybe every week?
Use your brain instead of your emotions.
Parents say NO to their kids ALL THE TIME. The mother created this drama to make the father seem like evil incarnate and you suckers are falling for it.

You sound like a god damn psychopath.
A father doesn't take his daughter to Disney World and this is your reaction.
You are one sick freak.
The good news, I guess, is that parents say no to their children all the time, so you will have a hard time choosing who to exact your insane plans on.

2012-07-19 12:45:04 AM

lousy screw: I am a divorced Dad who has 50/50 custody of his two children, only after walking through fire for a year-and-a-half to get it.

She filed for divorce, didn't tell me or the kids, and the next day took them on a two-week vacation that I couldn't afford to share in because I was the only one with a job. She told me about having filed the day after they returned, then asked me to help her break the news to the kids. I despise my ex-wife for the mischief she caused, simply out of spite, during the divorce

But, you know what? My kids have no idea how much I loathe their mother, and as far as I can tell, she rarely says a bad word about me to them. It's simply a line neither of us will cross.

TFA doesn't elaborate why Mom fought this guy so hard regarding visitation. Maybe she had her reasons; maybe she's a biatch. Doesn't matter. He's only truly hurting his daughter. Maybe he believes with all his heart that his ex and her mother are scamming a charity to get a free trip to Disney for themselves. Doesn't matter.

I don't know this guy. He may be the world's biggest prick, or he may have convinced himself this was the only honest thing to do. Doesn't matter. He's wrong.

It doesn't matter what the exes did to him. He should want his daughter, who went through hell in order to live, to be happy. That's what a real father would want for his child. To be healthy and happy. The fact that he choose his own selfish spite over his daughter's happiness is reason enough to call him a schmuck.

Bu-bu-but ex-wives NEVER do anything wrong. They'd never weaponize their terminally ill children on piggyback on their children's misfortune for personal gain.

This kid makes me want to take her to Disneyland to live forever. She can become Mickey's ward. Obviously neither of her real families is worthy of reproduction.

Agreed.
The proper action by decent parents should have been:
1. Make-A-Wish tells parents the kid won a trip to Disney World
2. Parents do not tell the child or anyone else about this yet (important part!)
3. If either of the parents don't think it's a good idea, then it doesn't happen
4. Don't run to the media or the public about things that are none of their business

Valid point. If he's only recently had visitation rights restored, doesn't that mean that the ex wife and mother-in-law denied him access to his sick daughter?
The article phrases it as though the whole "it ticked me off" were his excuse for rejecting the trip, rather than someone asking him a leading question...

It may sound indifferent and/or cold, but saying that MAW should be used for dying kids, not kids that got better, is only dickish first hand, rather than realizing that hey, the kid got better, life is their frickin' reward. The whole point of MAW is to let kids do things they may never get the chance to do. This girl, who's only 4, obviously is going to have a lifetime of chances to go to Disneyland/world... That seems to be the real point the father was making.

I'm not saying he should be absolved for the whole thing... more that he should be the one to come up w/the cash, and he should take his daughter to Disneyland to celebrate her recovery, rather than just stand on a principle that also spites his exes.

As big a douchebag as this father seems, and as sad for the little girl as I am...

Last week in my small town an estranged husband came home for a "surprise visit" and murdered his three daughters while their mom was at work, then turned himself into the police in silence. So I'll just heave a sigh of relief and say, "At least the girl in this story is only missing out on Goofy and Mickey."
