I would think that to be a supervillian, you have to live in Superville.

The Stealth Hippopotamus: It really really sucks to be the parent of a kid that doesn't feel pain. Mix that in with some mental retardation and you have the living hell that one of my buddies has to go though. The kid isn't smart enough to think "gee I just got hit by a car. That should have damaged me maybe I should lay here till someone checks me out". He just tries to get up and run off on a broken leg. And not just a little broken, compound broken broken.

Ewww gives me chills just thinking about it

Slacquer: Our former neighbor's son had this, combined with mental retardation. Imagine a toddler in the body of a 10-year old who could feel no pain. He had to be watched CONSTANTLY to make sure he wasn't in danger to himself or anyone else.

The family got fed up with the special ed system in our city and moved to a ranch in Texas. How that would help him is beyond me.

One step closer to the White House...

Suicide is painless. Although, it brings on many changes. I would take or leave them, if I could.

Ricardo Klement: dopeydwarf: doglover: Ricardo Klement: My aunt is an emergency room doctor and not a fan of pain medication.

She probably deals with all kinds of addicts.

Or she's just a biatch as evidenced by:

/Seriously - she objected to giving my grandfather morphine when he was in his final days suffering from pancreatic cancer.

But I'll leave the conclusions to Ricardo.

Probably some combination. She points out that anything with "-caine" increases your tolerance to anything else with "-caine" in it. Cocaine addict? Novocaine might not work. So she also refuses to buy sun burn lotion with lidocaine in it. I think she's paranoid. She's also against patient self-medication, even though studies have consistently shown that patients end up using LESS medication. (Because if the nurse offers, the answer is invariably "yes" for fear that the nurse won't be back before the current dose wears off. Whereas self-dosing mostly happens when it hurts.)

She's part of the reason I have a low opinion of doctors when it comes to science.

Yeah but your aunt is female... don't you mean she is a nurse??

SpaceyCat: Pain is the body's way of saying SOMETHING IS FARKING WRONG!!! DEAL WITH IT NOW! If that response isn't there, the broken bits won't get taken care of until things get way bad. The opposite also sucks ass. What do you do when your nervous system goes into overdrive and thinks all sensation is pain?

The body is pretty damn smart that way.

If only I could tie mom's car to her pain response. Like when the check engine light comes on it triggers effusive diarrhea every two hours until she gets it fixed.

Pain is just weakness leaving the body. Instead of morning coffee, I drink a pitcher of boiling water. Need your ass kicked? Stop by my house, it's the one on the corner with the billboard in the front lawn that reads BADASS MOTHERfarkER.

I think the work you're looking for is empathy. The lack of it would make one a psychopath. Or a republican. Usually both though

DoBeDoBeDo: Holy fark does he also have brittle bone disease? Every other sentence is about a broken bone.

If he did, I bet he would be the best damn pilot in the Alliance.Ricardo Klement: Seriously - she objected to giving my grandfather morphine when he was in his final days suffering from pancreatic cancer.

She sounds like a biatch. Had send my mom to the ER (called an ambulance) for what we later found out was a server infection in her spine. She was partly delirious and in a lot of pain. The attending refused to give her anything because 'she seemed high'. I told him she was just out of it. He said "if she was really hurting, she'd be writhing more" I asked him what the proper amount of writhing would be to get her some help for the pain and he just said "she doesn't need anything else". Farking asshole. She wasn't on drugs, her brain was addled from fever and infection. About an hour or two later they did a MRI and realised "holy fark, she needs surgery!" Two hours later she was in the OR and stayed in the hospital for almost two weeks.

Doctors aren't scientists. They don't do research and develop new treatments.

Doctors are just practitioners of medicine. They buy they pills the scientists make and use the tools scientists develop and repeat the things that work well while avoiding those things that don't.

I wish I shared your optimism about M.D.'s

Heh...I've had some good ones over the years...and one who literally could not do basic multiplication.

No idea how he got through med school...of course, he WAS a dermatologist.

/yeah, I went there

So when the other surgeons would joke and laugh, he wouldn't get the inside jokes?

Pro-tip: many scientists are doctors, just not medical doctors. Though many of the scientists I've met aren't douchebags and don't insist that you call them "Dr. Suchandsuch."
